The cobbles are going!

For those of you that are away from Trinity for the summer, the work on wheelchair access for front square has started. It looks ok, but I'm surprised they didn't use a darker colour of stone, its very white/bright compared to the dark cobbles. A blacker stone I thought would be more suitable.

In other renovation news, work is starting on the Pav extension and access, a new cycle rack is being installed outside the sport centre, the gym is being extended and Dublin Velib has been installed outside the science gallery and a new building is being constructed behind the 1937 reading room. Lots of changes for Trinity.

    pics or it didn't happen.

Hope it doesn't ruin the aesthetic. Although everybody hopes that, and it doesn't matter.

The new building behind the 1937 is the Long Room Hub and will look something like this artists impression.

The gym is only being extended a small bit, they are removing the offices and making the reception smaller. The plan is to add a whole new area of machines. The gym will increase in size by approx 70sqm.

I don't know what the pipe on Fellows square is for, I assume water for the construction site?

    EDIT:
Actually looked at the plans there, the pipe is a temporary dry riser, as due to the construction it would be impossible for a fire engine to get in around Fellows square

If I'm feeling nice, I'll take a few pics tomorrow! Only a small portion of the path has been laid, from in front of Student Records to half way to the examinations office. Also interesting to note is that Trinity have bought the Coyle Hamilton building on Nassau St for €16m. I wonder what they plan to do with it? Student accommodation perhaps?

I didn't like it at first, but its growing on me actually. Theres other plans afoot in the college to demolish Pearse St the red brick building and Simon Perry building and replace with this.

College has a policy of buying up properties in the vicinity of the campus when they become available, since there is obviously limited prospect for development in College itself. For example, the banking hall on Foster Place in in Trinity ownership and has been lying idle for years.

Simon Perry building isn't that old that it needs to be demolished already is it?

After reading this topic I think I'll find it hard to listen to Trinity talking about lack of funds again.

I think that building beside the arts block is nice though!

Good news about the Gym extension, I wondered where all the equipment went to. All those buildings look ****e. I'm in general disgusted and glad that the recession may prevent their retardation.

If only the College could find a few quid to install a croquet lawn where the lazer huts are. Would finish off the square nicely.

I am not sure why you'd say this, the big plans for along side the rugby pitch pictured above are just plans, pending funding, the building by Fellow Sq is funded by PRTLI cycle 4, money that specifically supports that building and not general on-going activity, where the real shortage is; the gym development is minor and is coming out of the gyms own income, which is ring-fenced and the pav and re-cobbling are minor works mostly required to improve disabled access.

Oh right, I had presumed by the way people were talking about it that everything was ready to go. I knew the gym money would be coming from the gym, but whoever is funding the rest.. it just seems a bit of a waste really.

*Facepalm* and I know that - but trademark/copyright infringement doesn't only take place when you quote their catchphrase directly.

Not everyone knows "robots in disguise" - especially as the new Transformers movies do not really mention it (except as a byline joke).

Great news about the gym though. Might actually be able to move around in there this year!

Its an end of an era for TCD. Once the pride of central Dublin, the capital of progressive thinking, debate and liberality - now its just another Americanised university with hideous buildings which are overpriced, overhyped and universally dispised. They'll take the cobbles - what'll be next? The front arch? You mark my words, they're just waiting for the right opportunity to knock over the GMB. The bastards.

They're not "taking" the cobbles, they're putting a more accessible path through them. The bit they've done so far looks nice enough I think.

I 100% agree with the improvements going on around the college to make it more accessible for disabled students, such as the path along the cobblestones and the extensions on the Pav.

However, these proposed new buildings look horrible and will detract from the character of the college.

Aren't the cobbles actually quite new, and only installed in the 20th century?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 784 ✭✭✭Peleus

ye but theyre nice and thats why we love em. The path better not look sh!te

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 605 ✭✭✭j1smithy

I had another look at the new path today, but I forgot my camera so no photos unfortunately. It looks like the lads have finished it though and it thas been tied off into the cobbles. The path they've laid comes from nowhere and leads to nowhere. This leads me to believe that this is just a sample to see how well the path fits into the context of front square/parliament square. There are also three different patterns in the way they're laid, which also leads me to believe its a sample.

Rather forward thinking on behalf of the buildings office, but perhaps they were legally obliged to do it. For example the IRFU/FAI were legally required to build a mock up of the facade of Aviva stadium across the railway tracks to see how it would fit in the context of the area.

It must be noted that the current and capital budgets are entirely seperate and the current problems re funding all apply to the current budget. Trinity must be getting money for capital projects from somewhere (probably a bank, student rooms for a university would be a low risk investment/loan), they've also put out a tender for 1000 student rooms in the city centre or along the DART line. The aim is to be able to offer rooms to any first or second year student that wants them, I believe.

My 2c anyway. If I remember to bring the camera tomorrow I'll take a few pics.

The cobblestones were installed in approximately 1969 and most of them were bought from the then Dublin Corporation as they were parking and paving stones. Apparently, on some of them, you can still see the double-yellow lines. This was revealed at a meeting of the Disability Services Committee which looked into it as they examined making the paths. So they do not have the historic 'character' that people seem to think. Indeed, it could be argued purchasing paving stones undermined the 'character' of the Campus. They are also dangerous and very awkward for people with mobility issues. I think it's about time.

There is a legal requirement for all buildings to be accessible by 2015; so it probably applies to Front Square.

Is the design for the Long Room Hub the chosen one? There were several designs and I can't remember which one was chosen.

I don't much care for Cybertron going by these CGI pictures, but the cobbles aren't all that old. They date from after the Great War (defo much older than 1969 though, Bartron), and they're not going, a granite path is simply being added. The GMB was built by knocking down a very nice row of old redbrick houses (numbers 28 through 31) that dated from around the same time as the Rubrics; I think it looks a bit gaudy tbqh, but it has settled quite nicely into its surroundings over the years.

I agree, and I was being a little hysterical. However, the new building looks grotesque - but then again the Arts block is absolutely vile and I spend most days in there. What to do? I understand you cannot build 'retro' buildings anymore, they just look tacky, but the vain attempts at futurism are a complete travesty.
