I'm on the 7.5 meg package.
It never topped out over 6.1 but I was fine with that, however its been really unreliable and earlier was down to less than 1 meg. My previous 3 meg package was solid as a rock, so they are getting an ear bashing tomorrow.

The first is a test I done a while back and the second one just there. Normally I get around 65 down and 40 up. But its a bit erratic as you can see. LAst night it went to 0.5 down and 57 up :eek: Should be back to normal tomorrow. I think my Uni are upgrading some **** and services are disrupted!! Living in Germany and also I don't have to pay for it so who cares ha!

This is 7mb eircom. My pc is running vista, maybe thats why the ping is looking mad.

    It is slow, any sugestions?

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 10,517 Mod ✭✭✭✭5uspect

Shouldn't have anything to do with Vista. It isn't the root of all evil!
Try a trace route in command prompt
    tracert www.google.ie

should help pinpoint where the lag is coming form.
Could be your router or the copper to the exchange.

The reason, why it might be erratic to some sites, is that they also need as big a pipe of unused bandwidth, as you are trying to pull. The minimum speedtest.net required for public speedtest servers used to be 45 mbit or so. Nowadays, they ask, that you at least have 100 mbit/s available, but they wouldn't necessarily have required older hosters to have that or checked up on it.

*You're getting some pretty serious slow down in a lot of your hops*

Sorry I am a newbie at this does that just mean that my router and cables are ****e (from eircom), or not set up right, or is it on the eircom side.

The guy from eircom I talked to was one of the most dismissive blokes I ever talked too, granted his english wasnt great, which is neither here nor there but no matter what I said he just told me "No it looks fine".

Its very hard to come away from a conversation like that and think yeah everything is ok and I am paying for bradband thats billed as fast and what I am getting is slow...

Sorry I should explain better. :o
Trace route is kinda like tracking a phone number in the movies.
It records how long each server your request takes to respond before you get to the web site you request and the path taken.

When you type a web address into your browser you go through your router, then your ISP redirects the request through its network and onto the website which takes the request through its router etc. Each redirect takes time. The more redirects the longer it takes. Also if one "hop" or redirect takes too long your internet will feel slow. In your case a lot of your hops are slow.

The hops are taking on average 100ms when they should really be faster.
Have you tried it at different times of the day. Perhaps try it late at night or early in the morning. You may have a contention issue as your neighbours may be doing some heavy downloading.

Here is a detailed explanation which is much clearer than mine.

Looks like a fault on your upstream connection. It makes downstream TCP/IP bad and pings bad, but doesn't affect UDP such as watching streaming video).
    Contact UPC.

The cable repeaters have two filters and a two amplifiers, one is 5MHz to 65MHz (upstream) and the other is 87MHz to 900MHz (downstream), approx bands.
If someone nearby connects something that affects the 10MHz to 50MHz band or and upstream amp is bad or your Modem is on wrong upstream setting (try unplugging cable modem from mains for 10min and reconnect.) then you get this problem, characterised by lost packets, high ping and very poor upstream speed.

Though the zero packet loss goes against my diagnoses.

Are www.speednet.net speed tests more accurate than eircoms speed test here :http://home.eircom.net/speedtest/ ?

On Eircoms speed test I get 3715kbps

    On speednet I get :

i did the ping test several times, and most of the time it had at 50-75% packet loss. the stats i posted up were after i accidently closed cmd when going to click on "mark" to copy paste here. repeated and got better results...

nothing has changed where the modem and router are though to expect the frequency to get messed up?
