Its no where near as good as the Seasons 1 & 2, buts its still ok.

I think not having Doakes in it anymore takes a lot away from the show.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,032 ✭✭✭✭Basq

I thought it was distinctly average as well to be honest.

Especially when compared to seasons 1 and 2.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,234 ✭✭✭bullpost

Not as good as seasons 1 and 2 , but still worth sticking with. In fairness maintaining the standard set previously was always going to be difficult but contrast it to pretty much everything else on TV and its still head and shoulders above the majority of it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 62 ✭✭James Mcfadden

I thought having the guy from "NYPD Blue" would have made it. But like all American shows (with a few exceptions)they dont when to stop and it gets corny.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,067 ✭✭✭L31mr0d

    Yeah they needed Doakes.

There also wasn't near enough killing. I liked seeing how Dexter set up the kill in S1 and S2 and also how he reasoned in his mind why it was ok to do so.

They should of really ended it with last season, I hope S4 will be good but I'm not holding my breath.

Dexter was completely out of character, the session was brutal. No one gives a ****e about his blond bint of a girlfriend.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,678 ✭✭✭DeepBlue

The first episode of S4 better start with Dex offing Rita during the honeymoon. There was far too much Rita and the wedding shoite in S3.

Btw I think the showrunner for Dexter left it at the end of season two to go work on Dirty Sexy Money. Maybe that had something to do with the fall off in standard. Also agree with above that Doakes was missed.
Dexter also seems to work best when he's in imminent fear of being caught/discovered and there wasn't really much of that in S3 although the bit where
he discovers where the blood on Miguel's shirt really comes from
was one of the best bits of all three seasons.

eh i stopped watching this season as well but i **** all to do at the bank holiday just gone - noone around so i watched them all - meh
ill still come back for next season though but its not like seasons 1 and 2 where you would be awake at 4am downloading it saying ah sure i only need 3 hours sleap before work. i used to be in bits on monday mornings

I thought it was great! Not as good as the first two, but nothing worth complaining about.. Can't wait for the next one :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 62 ✭✭James Mcfadden

I take it back the last few episodes were really good and so was the ending. But it was to much about the wife in this series.

It's getting great again...I just watched "The Damage a Man Can Do" and can't wait for the next one now...

Totally running out of ideas, hopefully they will wrap it up now

I disagree. Season 3 has been the weakest so far, but it is still excellent particularly from the episode "Easy as Pie" onwards.

And in the final episode, "Do You Take Dexter Morgan?", there are two clues about what two plot developments might be in store for season 4:
Deb is on the verge of finding out that Dexter is the Ice Truck Killer's brother, and the real Freebo shirt is still out there, somewhere. Dexter's blood spilt on Rita's wedding dress when they were dancing in the final scene which, I think, was done to remind us about that incriminating shirt...

Season 3 was indeed such a let down to Season 1 and 2. 2 Being my favourite!
Hopefully Season 4 will pick up!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,093 ✭✭✭Amtmann

Actually, having just re-watched the first season, yes, I have to agree that season 3 was far, far below par. Season One was so thematically dense and clever...as was Season Two. The Skinner did not cut it as an adversary at all, and neither did Miguel. It was a one dimensional series. There was very little excitement, and little in the way of true suspense.

What's needed is a major injection of adrenalin - the type that only comes from Dexter's killings coming under the spotlight a la Doakes and Lundy. The Bay Harbour Butcher case needs to be re-opened. Hopefully Deb will start to put the pieces together.

With Lundy coming back for S4
, we may well see some interest in the Bay Harbour Butcher case once more. Let's hope so.

I hope they stay well away from the whole
"Dexter's Dark Passenger is really a demon"
storyline that you find in the books.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,034 ✭✭✭✭Stark

Season 3 was a hack job. You could make up most of Dexter's dialogue yourself.

  • Registered Users Posts: 47 PurplePossum

Aw come on, it is such an original idea, of COURSE Season one is gonna stand out in comparrison, but they've got to take the ideas somewhere. Am still loving it.... Go Michael C. Hall. Cant wait for Season 4! And dont suggest they pull plug, just stop watching it if it bugs you that much! Dont ruin it for rest of us!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,032 ✭✭✭✭Basq

They're not gonna pull the plug depending on a couple of people's opinions.

I actually wouldn't mind it going as far as a season 4 or 5 - similar duration to 'Six Feet Under' and then end it.

They'll be truly flogging a dead horse if Dexter starts bumping off his kid's kindergarden teacher etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,544 ✭✭✭✭Tony EH

Thought Season 3 was ok. Better, IMO than Season 2, which by and large was awful except for the last few episodes. But Season 1 has set a bar that I think no other Season will meet.

But, so long as any other Season doesn't descend into Season 2's "which girl will Dexter end up with" nonsense again, then I'll be happy. That crap destroyed that series as far as I was concerned.

I really couldn't see that playing well in a tv show, that and the whole MLK thing in the books was hard enough to swallow...mind you something they could go with either this season or season 5(if it happens) is the idea of the kids turning out like Dexter and Dexter taching them the Harry Code.

I'll give it a chance, as I adore the first two seasons, and there will be a fourth. I don't like what I'm reading about the drop in quality! Doakes did add a sense of tension, which I imagine will alter how the program is done.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 237 ✭✭Moromaster

I din't like it because there was no 'big bad serial killer' on the loose. Just Migueille's lawyer bullcrap.

It was still an enjoyable watch, though.

Everything suffers from a lack of Doakes. Rewatching from season 1 makes me ever more aware of it.

3rd season was a mistake. There was a good moments (well I was shocked when
Prado said THANK YOU after Dex killed this guy who suppose to killed Prado's brother
but the rest, oh - my - god! Boring, no taste, just bad. Ok, it is past, very soon we could see 4th season (premiere this week in USA). I wish to all of us to enjoy this season! :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 202 ✭✭antod

yeah agree with alot of yee the 3rd series was very average the 2nd series is my favourite, cant wait for the 4th series.

What's the consensus on Season 4 so far from people? I've been turned off the show by Season 3, but I might give it another go if Season 4 is a return to Season 1/2 quality.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,795 ✭✭✭sweetie

I@m liking it a lot. First two episodes have set it up nicely with return of a major character and a new villain who looks very intriguing. Dexter trying to do his thing whilst being a husband and father is very interesting too. So far it iis much better than last year.

I'm exactly the same. Haven't bothered with Season 4 since S3 was so poor overall (albeit with a few decent episodes).

I think I'll wait till this season finishes and see what the overall view is here before I dive back in.

Doakes is a huge loss to the show..
Still can' believe those idiots wrote him out of it ...2 seasons later I'm still pissed at em:mad:
Their only hope now to to reinvent Quin as Doakes version 2..

Just finished watching season 3 about two hours ago. I was really disappointed. With season two myself and the OH got really in to it and stayed up really late one night so watch about 6 episodes together. We lost interest in season 3 and I only watched the last few episodes today because I'm home sick in bed.

Really hope season 4 is better and there is less of Rita - she is just annoying and the marriage thing just didn't fit in. How is he going to disappear to kill now if he lives with her? I also hope they don't go down the same storyline as the books
where the two kids are mini dexters and he teaches them harry's code and how to kill - that was lame

Well we're six episodes into Season 4 and it's a huge improvement over Season 3. They've managed a much better balancing act between his family life and the Dark Passenger and work it well into the flow of the story.

The main arc is a lot better too and, to be honest, I think it's superior to the previous season in every respect. In fact Season 2 only picked up for the second half whereas Season 4 is good from pretty much the start. I'm a lot more hopeful from what I've seen so far.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,093 ✭✭✭Amtmann

I'm impressed at how dense this season (four) is. Six episodes in and it already feels like we've seen more than in the 12 episodes of season 3.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,436 ✭✭✭SM01

Glad to hear season 4 is held in such regard. Was having doubts after season 3 (which I enjoyed for the most part but didn't have me pining for more). I'll have to wait until season 4 in it's entirety to buy/download before I start into 4 though - I devour series in 3 and 4 hour sessions over the space of a week so not being having the next episode on demand would destroy me!

Absolutely agree with this. Seems like an awful lot has happened! It's a huge improvement on season 3 which was poor by the standard we all came ot expect but still better than most of the tripe that's on tv.

    Loving season 4.

That's a nice way to be. I'm on top of all the shows I watch so find myself having to constantly wait a week because I tend to watch them straight away once they're available!

I haven't watched any Dexter this year 'cos last year was so shite.
Now that it's finished how did S4 compare to S3?

    Spoiler-free obviously :).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,163 ✭✭✭✭Boston

Better then season 3. Might be good if you watch it all together as I felt it was drawn out.

Some fanboys swear its the best season of dexter, but frankly that's entire based on the last few episodes. If I wasn't already a fan, season 4 wouldn't have made me one.

Watch it. Now. I gave the second half of it to my cousin last night and he stayed up til 5 watching it. Feel sorry for him now with his little nephews being all hyper. :pac:

Seriously though, acquire it now and watch it. It may well be in my top 5 seasons of TV shows ever.

The earlier episodes were good, then there was one really, really ****e episode and then the final ones were excellent. Lithgow really helped make it though. It's probably not as good as season 1 but it was still brilliant.
