As for the third episode, what was the story with the amount of cursing? Were they going for the Colm and Jim-Jim school of funny - cursing is funny, especially when you beep it out? I'm no prude, but cursing isn't comedy.
Yes it is, out here in the west it's an art form. A whole town can be in stitches over one perfect insult.

    Fair play to the bucks.
Youtube viewer figures finally beginning to reflect storyland votes........ who would have thunk it. :D

You don't need to curse to prefect an insult.

RE: our plot, MKNotaro, I actually kind of agree with you as there were some forced cuts made to our episode 3 due to circumstances beyond our control that affected the narrative thrust quite a bit, which is unfortunate.

    That's a pity.

Hope you get through this round.

If every project had the same production values of yours - this would have been a much different, and dare I say, better competition.

People who give out about cursing in comedy drive me crazy, Hardy bucks makes fun out of the thick young irish male form the country. Find me one of these sterotypical irish males that do not curse twice as much as the Hardy Bucks.

I'm from the country and here a well timed and delivered curse can have people in stiches for god knows how long. Do some people on hear that do not like cursing expect the creaters of Hardy Bucks to leave out this piece of Irish culture for what ever reason?

Don't Jinx it, you don't know what the last episodes will be like.

Hopefully the Bucks will up their game even more, I'd cut down on the swearing though.

So they'll be aired on RTE? Probably a late night slot on a Monday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,378 ✭✭✭Borneo Fnctn

If RTE don't jump all over the Hardy Bucks and get behind it, they would really be morons. I honestly haven't met a person who didn't love the show. If the quality is consistent as it has been, and the word is spread, this show will be an absolute guaranteed winner.

I noticed that one of the freebie papers (Herald or Metro, can't remember which) ran a short article about Psych Ward and the Storyland project in general today.

First I've seen about Storyland outside of the web. Did you guys get that in there as a press release Luke or were they working off their own initiative?

That was our press release that made it into Metro. It's a funny one, RTE have done very little, but my theory is that they are seeing how good the individual entrants are at generating online hype. Having said that, the lack of a permanent Storyland presence on www.rte.ie is pretty inexcusable.

I don't think it is great. RTÉ would be morons not to get behind Psych Ward.

It might be good in a one off special tv movie. It looks great and the actings fairly good but the 3rd episode just gave the whole story away. It just strikes me as more of a style over substance thing, at first I thought it was going to be a horror but now it's a straight forward moody version of the clinic. I'm not saying it's bad it just doesn't excite me all that much.

Hardy Bucks is fresh in that it's the only west of Ireland show since Fr Ted.

Ros Na Run, Single Handed, The Running Mate.

I think RTÉ should have run a Dramatic Storyland and a Comedy Storyland.

Probably should have, comedy will nearly always out trump drama. Is single handed the cop thing never really heard of any of those other than Ros Na Run which even though I don't watch it much at first glance looks like a far superior show to fair city.

The Running Mate is a satirical comedy/drama based in Kerry (its the west) Gealteacht, produced for TG4 with the assistance of the BCI. It centred around an newly independent FF election candidate who feel out with the party. Excellent political comedy/drama. (Bi-lingual).

I am sure their are others from the West.

I don't think comedy out trumps drama.

i dont know if its an intended arc of the Hardy Bucks but the Boo is reallly emerging as the star i think, if you have followed the hardy bucks since the original demos on bebo i think eddie and buzz have got a little tired and predictable ,

a boo spin off show similar to joey from friends only not completely ****e, the boo moves to new york to start his acting / porn career???

...or the Boo tries to make it as an Ultimate Fighter. His special move would be a cheeky bottle of Buckfast to the back of the head.

There is no problem with cursing. But over use of the F word often leads to bad scripting (The Wire is the only show that got away with a scene using just the F word, and that was because the actors where very good at their job and could say the F word repeatly. just like on boards **** ****
    **** oh **** **** **** :D)

As I said if you can get away with it then you should, but it shouldn't be used to shock, often shows (perhaps not Hardy Bucks) use the word to shock.

As I said a good insult is better then just telling someone to **** off. You don't need to curse in an insult.

I disagree. Trailer Park Boys is a good example of where swearing is used to perfection. Ricky's 'fu*k offs' are an art-form and reading interviews with Mike Clattenberg its clear that the swears are given a lot of consideration before they were written in.

Which is what I said if you are going to swear be sure to know when it is appropriate for the script and also for the actor involved. I have seen some actors unable to swear and I have watched TV and film were swearing is dotted around the script as though the scriptwritter didn't know any other words, it doesn't make for good TV or Film.

I wouldn't be a huge fan of TPB. TBH.

i think ur all missing the point here. its mockumentary. So it needs a lot of realism thus a lot of cursing throughout the show as thats what happens in reality. To claim that hardy bucks are relying on cursing from a scripts point of view is just silly.

The point I made was from way back because some one suggested that you need cursing for good insults, which isn't the case. And I am talk generally not just about Hardy Bucks.

As a mockumentary The Office rarely used the F word. I realise it is a Mockumentary about an Office hence lack of cursing. But the same could be said of Paths to Freedom.

I was the one who brought up the cursing thing. My main reason for doing so wasn't that they were cursing. It was the stupid beeping of it out. Which is exactly what Colm and Jim-Jim do.

If you're on a platform where you can curse, then fine, go ahead, do so.
But if you're on a platform where you not allowed curse, beeping it out afterward doesn't make it funnier, unless the beep in itself makes it funnier.
