Cavan Meath back in the old days. I think they are the only two teams from neighbouring counties to play in All Ireland football final before the advent of the backdoor. In 1949 Meath stopped Cavan getting 3 in a row and in 52 Cavan beat Meath in a replay to win their last title, Cavan people were attacked in Meath on their way home from Dublin. Still a big local rivalry now and also between Meath and Louth. Everyone hates Meath.

Did meath fans have black flags out in 1957 when Louth won their ALL-iRELAND. Was talking to a lady one day who told me this and they got awful abuse on their way home.

As for the rivarly. Just about Everyone should be proud of the G.A.A and what it brings to sport. Dublin and Meath is special. The tension and anixety in the ground is amazing. Meath might be struggling at moment but come C'ship the sight of a blue jersey will be worth a few points. Still think Dubs will sade it. As previous poster stated Croke Park is Dubs home ground its not its the only one that can hold the. Most enjoyable day out with Dubs are on the road. Thurles v Kerry the drawn match. Great rivelary, respect
As for Derry Tyrone. What goes on their is not sport is pure vile. Hatred. It has no place in sport and it aint all one sided and not all on the pitch.

Is this not hypocrisy? Dublin v Tyrone a few years ago...Chaos, all started by Alan Brogan. Dubs are a dirty shower and I don't expect you to agree with that but its fact!!

Oh are they?...what about Tyrone then? The poor innocent darlings that they are.

This thread is about rivalries and not about who is dirty or not. That is for another thread.I suggest you (and others) keep this on topic from now on.No slating of Dublin or any other county.FFS,it is only March.

Next person to slate a county or drag this thread off topic or turn it into a flame will be banned.

Thats not fact its crap. Tyrone dont like getting knocked about in Omagh, look what happened a few weeks ago with Kerry. This is the 31 against 1 stuff. No a bit of hypocricy as far as I can make out. That rivelarybetween Derry and Tyrone is VILE, pure Filth.
Dublin and Meath have a good rivelary based on respect. Its tough, hard and 99 times out of 100 its fair. Always has been a player on any decent Inter county team who is prepared to overstep the mark. Everyone know this and accepts it.
Back to topic again, Parnells and St. Vincents c1980s, W.W.3. but not exactly a rivelary.
Dublin and Meath roll on the Summer:)

There's a certain vile element to Derry Tyrone rivalry. To single it out is ridiculous. Dublin Meath can be as bad.

Search the threads for the Parnell Park game last year and the 2 Championship games in 07 and you'll see what I mean.

I'm sure if you go deep into Galway Mayo, Cork Kerry etc. you'll find find the same.

Actually even though Galway v Mayo is a huge rivalry there is very little animosity between the counties or the supporters. Maybe because so many Mayo people went to college in Galway down though the years or live and work in Galway. I even know a few Mayo supporters that came down to Tuam in 98 when Galway were bringing back Sam to Connacht for the first time in 32 years.

Yes there is a vile element to this "derby" betwen Tyrone and Derry. For the itensity of it Dublin and Meath and Cork and Kerry very little goes on. Last year in Parnell Park didnt look good, but was there a decent punch thrown? NO. Handbags and pushing and it sold a few papers for a few journalists who could'nt write a match report to save their lives. Gutter press. You have to go back a long way to previous bout of fighting. Pairc Tailtean Navan about 1990 in a league game. Dave Synott and Bernard Flynn having a go belt at each other (think they were working for Tennants lager togeather at the time) and a few slaps over at the stand. Just like Mayo and Galway a lot of these players from Dublin and Meath go to collage togeather and with the commuter belt moving all through Meath the rivalary is even better. Sure Dubs like Wayne McCarthy are playing in Meath and is Mick Deegan's son plays for Donaghmore/Ashbourne? Long may this great dual go on. We are gone mad on P.C in G.A.A but I still stick to original, Dublin V Meath, Cork V Kery Cork V Tipp Mayo V Galway are rivelaries to be admired in the most part.

Ah your talking about the scum who call themselves supporters or sports fanatics:mad:.

They are everywhere but much less prevelent at G.A.A games than other sports. imo. They get their fix fighting, most others get their fix seing sportsmen in action. G.A.A. supporters have so much in common with each other your more likely to see them chatting about club games than any thing else

For intercounty rivalries- looking back at video clips of games Tipp v Cork in the late 80's, early 90's it seems to be the one. Pitch invasions, replays, packed crowds, great shared and even history in terms of All Ireland wins- it had the lot. It's also the one that has endured the longest in that it was around in the early days and the full house signs are usually still up when these 2 meet today. So it gets my vote.

As for some of the earliest rivalries in the GAA, I know Cavan v Monaghan and Meath v Monaghan were two of the biggest early rivalries in the GAA. Anyone got any others to add?

Has to be Kilkenny and Longford in Championship hurling. When these two teams are at there best, theres no better spectacle on the planet.

i been at many a game over the years as a tyrone fan. the one that stands out was in '95 when as a 12 year old i saw them beat derry by 11 points to 10. a heart stopping game, but i'll neer forget the rivalry that i saw on that day, deeper than anything i ever saw before, both on and of the pitch.

derry, in my opinion are the great rivals, followed by armagh, kerry and dublin, the three latter being moreso down to sucess, as these rivalries began probaby in 95 all ireland final. :)

    tyrone for sam 09

But its not a claim its a FACT, Thurles is the home of hurling, unless you have a different version to 1884???

Have to agree with Cruiserweight, Armagh is probably closer to being the birthplace of hurling. As for your theory that it's because the GAA was founded in Thurles, Does that mean Tipperary is the 'Home of Football' too because I haven't seen any road signs or talk to that effect.

coming from kilkenny, i'd say our only proper rivalries are with tipp and cork. Waterford and wexford have never really been considered enough of a threat historically to get under the skin of most of the county. Cork is a good natured enough rivalry generally, more bad blood with tipp due to bein neighbours and what happened delaney a few years back

Dublin v Kerry (Say no more)
Dublin v Meath (There is still nothing quite as spicy as a neighbouring rivalry)
Dublin v Tyrone (They'll never get over 1995); I can't wait to play them in a final again. Should've been this year. :(
    Mayo v Kerry
    Mayo v Dublin
    Derry v Tyrone
Donegal v Tyrone (It's new but it's good)
    Armagh v Tyrone

    KK v Tipp
    Cork vTipp
KK v Cork (Back in the noughties there was nothing like this)

I started reading this thread just now and was surprised at the lack of mentions of Tipp vs Kilkenny. Then I noticed that the thread was started in 2008 before the multitude of recent big games between the two had even been played. I think it's come to the fore in the last few years.

The Mayo-Roscommon rivalry around Ballaghaderreen is about as bitter as any in the country. It disappears once you drive far enough from the border though.

I n fairness that's actually a very bitter rivalry full stop. The sheer dislike of Roscommon from Mayo people is astounding. and I never understood it when I was younger. I do now.

Being from Kilmovee, there are few games that please me more than a good hammering of Roscommon in the Connacht championship.

A lot of that is because there is actually a border "war"going on, due to an 18th century land grab. Some rich MP (John Dillon?) living in County A, wanted to pay the lower rates of County B, so he engaged in some under hand jiggerypokery to get the border moved. As you do ! It's not strictly a GAA rivalry.

You can't say we Dubs don't know our history ! :D

Ah, but while Ballagh is jurisdictionally within Roscommon you'll be hard pressed to find someone in Ballagh not wearing red and green.

    Sure, look at Andy Moran.

There are rossies in Ballagh but usually they're the ones who don't really care about football.

Andy Moran was a Roscommon supporter as a kid, his dad was from Roscommon proper.
