I can't find anything to say otherwise so presume this includes NI.

looking at my a/c after being up north at the weekend i notice that the worst exchange rate i got for using my laser card was, surprise surprise, from an irish company. O'briens sandwiches were 1c worse that the worst english retailer. ffs.

If you're looking at exchange rates on your account or statement then surely that means you were charged in £stg. If that's the case then the issue is with your bank, not the trader.

Yes that does apply to the North, we got the Heinz baby juice for £1 in Asda Enniskillen. They were also selling 2 boxes of Pampers nappies for £18.

:) Hi, Myself and my wife and 2 kids (6 & 11) are looking to stay in Belfast city mid Feb Fri & Sat night. Does anyone know of any good deals in hotels which are ok for families, ie pool. Doing some shopping there also so would like it central to city.

    Thanks

    slightly off topic question:

if I was to get the bus up to belfast, can I stop in another town on the same route (eg newry) on the way, and continue on up to belfast on the same ticket? or would I have to pay the extra from newry to belfast?

None of the NI stores are listed in the drop down on the right of page so might be worth a call before hand.

Probably wouldn't work with the bus but should work for the train (as you don't have to get your ticket stamped in smaller stations before getting on) although i'm not sure where it goes through.

I bought 3 mattress's in Newry two weeks ago
Got them from O'Reillys Furniture on the Old Warrenpoint Road.
They took Euro in cash and gave me 1 euro = 1 Sterling.
They then delivered them for free.
    I live in Co.Meath.
Family run business very easy to deal with and better value than Dreams who wanted 40 sterling to deliver.

Do they do Living room furniture? Sofas/Corner units/Coffee tables etc? How big is their showroom?

    From today's Irish Times

"NOTHING BETTER illustrates the sizeable challenge that cross-Border shopping presents to retailers in the Republic than recent market research data from Northern Ireland. The research findings showed that in December two British supermarkets, Sainsburys and Asda, had taken a 2.5 per cent share of the grocery market in the Republic."

went up to newry today to do the sainsbury shop and it was v busy. took ages to get parked but my patience worked as got a spot right outside the front door :D. handy as i had to bring baby today.

sainsbury were v. busy and stock disappearing quickly - offers they have on various items were sold out e.g. 70cl bottle smirnoff vodka £11, the litre has gone up a bit since christmas as now £16.99 and was £14 at christmas so you'd be better off buying 2 x 70cl, probably why there was none left, pampers wipes BOGOF, oatso (like ready brek) ½ price so need to get there first thing as asked one of the lads to see if any cereal left but there wasn't - all in all, still a good shop done

oh yeah - forgot why i started my story. asked one of the girls on the floor is there a good day to come when it's not busy. she said mon and tue used to be ok but no day is good anymore and sat she said she was on and there was nothing left on the shelves at 10 to 6 !

I was in Newry today and it was busier - carpark etc, was there 3 weeks ago on a Wednesday and it was alot quieter, but I guess people were still skint from Xmas and people have had their monthly salaries paid in. It was hectic around the nappy and household cleaning section.

I bought my usual wine supply- nice Chilean wine I have had before Maipo Valley Reserve was £3.98, buy 6 get a further 5% off. Whiskas pouches 2 boxes for £5, they're nearly €6 a box is Tesco.

Notice my Lloyd Grossman sauces were not a good buy £1.87 a 100g jar, Lidl have them for €1.57 in RoI, mind you Asda have them for £1 but I am not into a long drive to find an Asda.

Went into Next to buy a lamp shade and picked up a set of 7 very nice tea towels for £1 - bargain. So a good days shop. With my Sainsburys and Lidl shop today I have all my core groceries for the next 3 weeks for a total of €140, just buy meat, bread and veg locally.

Should have bought your meat in Sainsburys - Sirloin & striploin steaks, Leg of lamb & lamb chops were half price yesterday !

going to Sprucefield, it's a bigger Sainsbury's and has a huuuuuuuge car park and there's a M&S close by as well.

Apart from Sainsbury's and M+S can anyone tell me what other shops are in Sprucefield there please? Also does anyone know if there is an Asda in Lisburn town itself? Or do Sainsbury's compare as well on price and stock as Asda do?

    Cheers.

There are 2 shopping centres in Sprucefield, seperated by a main road.

    This is the original ..

    http://www.sprucefieldcentre.co.uk/

The other is anchored by Sainsburys, and includes, IIRC, B&Q, Currys & Toys'R'Us.
Also does anyone know if there is an Asda in Lisburn town itself?

According to the Store Locator service on their website - No

Having lived in the UK for many years, I just have an appreciation of butchers and I like to support my local guys. The great thing about ireland is that we have plenty of these outlets still.

Did you see that Ch4 programme last year about meat from supermarkets?- it would put you off.

Was in Newry and Sprucefield yesterday. Neither were particularly busy. Sainsbury's in Sprucefield have 18 bottles of Kronenburg for £9.98.

went to Enniskillen this morning. Bad move, forgot about Rally Ireland, all the racers were out, twas a nightmare getting there. That aside, landed @ 7am, place was empty, shelves were well stacked. usual bargains to be had, booze was up a little. Woolworths has already been taken over by another discount shop, think it was b&m, gr8 offers, campbells soup 39p, disp latex gloves 20, 1 pound. A lot of other gear to be had, if you were kitting out a student pad you could do it real cheap tables, chairs duvets etc
plenty of parking to be had when I was leaving at 11.30. every shop has 50-70% sales on. even picked up a pair of tesco jeans 4 £1.50!!!!!!!!! Heatons had some good stuff too, lined curtains for 7ft window £10, bath sheet £4. Got a few things in Game and had no problems like an earlier poster, they said they take cash or cards from anywhere, even carried the gear out to the car!!!!!!!!!!!! was weighed down with bags n have to admit was taken aback by the offer. can anyone top that. never offered that service down south b4

Anytime I have shopped in the north the cashiers have ALWAYS helped pack bags, they are so friendly up north, they even take the time to chat, you are lucky to get a grunt here. The cashiers down south are the pack you would ever meet, never had one help with packing the groceries. I will NEVER do my main grocery shopping here in the Republic.

    Good point
But, i was waiting so long to get to the till
in sainsburys newry two weeks back that
    i didnt want any help
The cashier was packing and scanning the goods for everyone
thus meaning it was taking forever to get a trolleyful through
so when my turn came i threw it all into the trolley myself
    to get out quicker.
He did ask me if i wanted a wee hand tho
Nice member of staff and they all are up there compared to here
tho the older staff members in tesco are usually nice here
and overall theyre not so bad really
just one or two disinterested ones i guess
That part doesnt bother me tho as id pack it much quicker myself
and dont want to have to be there one minute more than is necessary

Theyre not as bad as people say down here in general really
I find them nice enough tho theyre not under near as much
pressure imo as they are up north
Its just that theyre far more polite up north really overall
It would be interesting to see how the staff down here would
react to a request for something if they were as busy as up north tho
