Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Okay, so maybe one of the guy currently in garnerville could answer me this:

I've heard it from various people about the regulations regards hair for guys in training. My hair is about this long >

    /
    /

I've heard people talking about a 'number 2 all over'.
I've never had my hair that short and don't wanna do it if it's not neccessary.

    So can anyone help?
    What's the exact rules?
Is it only the bit outside the hat that needa be that short?

I'm not a poser, it's my girlfriend who's more worried about this than me :pac:

I hope your PC monitor isnt a 42" widescreen cos that would mean your hair is about a foot long

Hair must be off the collar, I imagine hair that long all over would be too long! Girls can have it long but only if they wear it in a bob or use pins to keep it up, not a great look for fellas.
A 2 or 3 round the back and sides and longer on top should be okay.
You could go longer on the back and sides but as it is not allowed to touch the collar it might look a bit strange

theres no point in even reading the hair regulations as the drill staff will make you shave it anyway. they rule the place. i had a nice head of hair going in but now im down to a 1 all over. they will say a 2 but sure i just get a 1 because id be getting my hair cut every week if i got a 2.

sure you can grow it back when the 20 weeks are up:D role on march!!!!

can anyone who is already in or has been in give me a breakdown of what your boot polish/bulling kit consists of.

i can think of 2x brushes, black kiwi, bulling cloth, toothbrush (for getting into the nooks and crannies), cotton wool (i know some use it to bull, but not sure if it is seen as cheating/shortcut)

anything in that list that is not usually needed or anything that i should add to the list? also did you folk go out a buy the bits and pieces to make it up a bit at a time or did you order a kit like i've seen on surplus sites? i.e.

    http://www.surplusandadventure.com/shopscr2216.html

    any help much appreciated

Dont be goin mad and buyin fancy stuff and all. All you need is a good polish on and a good polish off brush that will do you for the coming years in your career. This will cover you for your day to day boots. For your No 1's get a good yellow duster to put polish on and then 100% cotton wool balls to use to bull boots. And kiwi black only....nout else and defo not clear liquid polish.
Dont bring an ironing board, there are loads in the laundry room, but do bring a half decent iron (20-30 quid would be enough).

    Whats your start date?

I used "guardsman" gloss polish and thought it was great! other people thought it was sh**! the most important thing is spit and you get it free.
I would never put a brush near your bulled boots it will destroy the shine, your number 1 boots will only be worn on parade and should never actually need polished just a light rub with a cloth on the areas that arent bulled. get a plastic bag to keep all your polish kit in (keeps clothes etc moist and stops you gouging into the bull with hard lumps of polish) and keep the yellow duster away from the rest of your unform they are little fluff makers and you will be tortured trying to get it off your trousers, you could use the kiwi liquid gloss on the edge of the sole just to give it a bit of a shine but if you get it on the bulled area it'll look like sh**!
    Good Luck

thanks for that buddy, i just wasnt sure what was required, i hadnt intended on buying fancy kit unless it was really necessary, a couple of brushes and a cloth and some cotton suits me fine and dandy.

i'm due to start 1st of feb

What is the best Kiwi to get just the ordinary black polish or the parade gloss??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 433 ✭✭MORRI

standard kiwi is fine, the parade gloss is a bit oilier and you need to be careful not to put too much on at a time. start with the standard ordinary one and if you wanna give the parade gloss a try you can without doing any harm.

i'm starting 1st feb and have a couple of moolah related questions for the current SO's or whoever.

1)is the 2007 payscale still accurate or is there a newer scale? and if so can you inform us what it is?

2)Are the figures on the payscale inclusive of the ni allowance or do you add the ni allowance on top of this to workout a more accurate yearly?

feel free to pm if anything is sensitive.

I'm kinda dreading the first few days. I'm only home from holiday on the Wednesday and I'm terrified I'll be jet-lagged and zombie-like for the first day or so. I've heard the first days are usually 12 hours long!!:eek::eek:

  • Registered Users Posts: 222 ✭✭Wanalaugh

pandapants, dont worry about it, you will be fine trust me. The first 3 days are ok, and if i can remember there is only 1 late night out of the 3.

if i were you Pandapants i'd try to stay awake until you would normally go to bed then that way it helps you adjust back to this timezone and you won't be as wrecked!!

I do try, but I get soooo tired and I generally want/try to kill people when I get tired and grumpy. :D:D I'm getting back to Belfast about 3pm, so I'll plan something nice for the afternoon to stop me going to bed.

SRD = Student registration day which we have to attend on the 19th of jan.

hair length, everyone male or female has to have their head shaved, number 2 allover.

........just kidding no idea what the score is for women, if you can get it into a bun and its all tight and tidy and fits under the cap then you may be ok, but they'll let you know at the SRD.

Welcome to the Mighty Greens Laura :D

We really are gonna have to make a code so we all know each other as PB999 suggested!!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 433 ✭✭MORRI

you dont have to live in G'ville! you stay Monday-Friday for the first 4 weeks, even then if you dont live too far away you can nip home occassionally if you ask nicely. so there is no real need to be washing clothes there, as for ironing and bulling boots, practise makes perfect. Lets face it if you cant manage them how well will you do at filling in a scene log, searching a house, using a firearm-cs spray, driving an armoured car, standing up in court or making coffee for your sergeant?:D

Bulling boots is easy enough, just takes patience and requires you to put up with a sore finger (that sounded bad i know)

Depends what is expected tbh, could be anything from clean to glass toe-caps. Glass toe-caps is easy enough but that really requires patience... endless small circles with a yellow cloth and one finger with repeated spitting (yes it really is called spit and polish for real). But once you realise it isn't going to be done in an hour and accept you'll be at it for days every spare minute its fine.

To be honest though I doubt they'll be requiring that kind of shine!

Ironing is more of a problem cos it isn't just ur every day shirt ironing. If the uniforms are anything like the naval ones I had at school (yes military boarding school!) then they get very shiney very easy so a cotton/linen cloth to iron through is key, just wet it a little to create steam and iron over the uniform through the cloth to prevent the shininess.

I really wouldn't worry about these bits tho as they'll be expecting that most people did not go to a military school and have never had to do this kind of polishing and ironing before in their lives and will not be very good at it at first.

Plus anyone in my intake (hopefully March - fingers and everything else crossed!!) i'm happy to help as best I can :)
