It certainly seems like there won't be peace in the Middle East until Israel is wiped from the face of the earth.

Rather hysterical. An agreed withdrawal would cut a great deal of the violence generated towards them.

And the other states in the region aren't actually all that fond of each other either.

I'm really really surprised at most of you people's view of Hamas calling them cowards and worse than IDF.

Hamas were elected by the people of palestine in the most fair elections that ever happened in the Arab world.
They're a government body, not a terrorist organisation like the media has portrayed them to be. They've been forced into violence towards Israel by Israel itself.
All they stand for is regaining their lands back so their people can stop becoming refugees and can live in peace.
If you ever listen to what they have to say (not what the media has to say about them), you'll see that they make a lot of genuine points.

Do some research and stop believing everything on CNN and Fox news. There is a lot of negative publicity about Hamas out there. They're really just a government body which is not as well equipped as Israel or many of the western governing bodies. Hence it doesn't take much to give them the "terrorist organisation" image.

Slightly off topic, but is it just Hamas based in Gaza or are they in the West Bank also?
Also, what ever happened to Hezbollah and the Al Axa Martyrs brigade?

Hamas tend to be found in the Israeli-occupied areas like the West Bank and Gaza. The organisation's reason for inception to begin with was the beginning of the first intifada, or Palestinian uprising against Israel's occupation in the West Bank and Gaza..

Well, the last I've heard about Hezbollah was that it was being re-armed by Iran via Turkey with missiles circa July of last year. They're still furious following the assassination of one of their high-ranking commanders by a car bomb last February. They've said they won't initiate any war with Israel but warned that Israel would pay a "high price" in a future open war.

Further back, during the 2006 war in the Lebanon and the north of Israel, one of the principal parties responsible was Hezbollah. The conflict kicked off when Israeli soldiers were kidnapped and killed during a cross-border raid by Hezbollah. In a speech in July last year, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah acknowledged that he had ordered the kidnapping of Israeli soldiers in order to free prisoners held in Israeli jails...

As for the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade.. They formed an alliance with Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad to shoot rockets into Israel from Gaza back in January '08. I haven't heard much about them recently, tbh.

Ditto George W Bush (well second time around, anyway)

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Don't compare Hamas to Hitler. If anything you can compare Israel to Hitler and what they seem to be doing now can be compared more to Hitler's acts.

Do some research to find out about Hamas. They only want Israel to go back to the lands they had been assigned in 1967 so the palestinians can have a land to live in peace. That is all they want. Its Israel that has been encompassing violence against palestine and violence only breeds more violence.

Are you serious? The Hamas charter explicitly states
The Day of Judgement will not come about until Moslems fight the Jews (killing the Jews), when the Jew will hide behind stones and trees. The stones and trees will say O Moslems, O Abdulla, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him.

What they stand for is the destruction of Israel and the murder of Jews. If that policy isn't appalling to you then I worry for your mindset! Oh and yes they are a terrorist organization as declared by a number of countries and not just media outlets. In fact I find that RTE news do a terrible job of portraying them for the barbaric group that they are.

    Cencorship and that video clip.

Well who's word do we have that its an IDF strike on Palestinians and not either a bomb factory explosion, a suicide bomber (before this present conflict or even now as Fatah have opened up a front on Hamas in the last few days) or a rocket launch gone terribly wrong?.

Good point. But then every explosion in Gaza could be the work of Hamas. And would Hamas kill their own ?(there are certainly Hamas casualties in the video) Maybe they would. Israel are engaged in a heavy bombardment of Gaza at the moment so I think its reasonable to accept that this was one of their attacks.
    Mairt wrote: »
So does showing horrible scenes like that reflect accurate reporting?

Omitting images of what is happening there certainly isn't accurate reporting, imo. The fact that journalists, who could discriminate between IDF and Hamas attacks, are not allowed enter Gaza doesn't help either.

I'd be interested to hear more of what you have to say on the situation as someone who served there.

What? Its only the last couple of years that Hamas has said they might change their objective from trying to destroy Israel to get their lands back. But AFAIK their charter still calls for the destruction of Israel.

    EDIT: What D-gen says. ^^^

Well they are cowards, they might have been elected but they are still choosing to fight out of densily populated areas without regard to the amount of civilian casualties this might cause. On the other hand the IDF is just as bad; only they have been putting another country's civilians in danger.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,053 ✭✭✭✭BostonB

I seen one instance of it. That other fella made it seem like it was a video of Hamas members only tending to Hamas members by stripping their weapons and fatigues. There was about 95% civilians in that video.

Obviously theres civilians in there. But consider, once stripped of weapons and fatigues do they not look like civilians?

Do they have the worlds most sophisticated armed force at their disposal??

Yes, they don't. They're over 50 years behind IDF in military technology. All they have are few machine guns and rocket launchers. Where as the IDF has bulletproof tanks, armoured bulldozers and F-16 fighter jets. Also not to mention the most well trained and well equipped ground military personal.

And also Gaza is a small land with more than 1.5 million people living there. All of Gaza is densily populated. There are no special empty lands in Gaza where they can set up military bases and work from there.

Yep, they're forced to setup in front of a school. No space anywhere else for them.

Doesn't that make a better case for them not fighting Israel, instead of poking at them till the retaliate. Fighting with Israel is going to get them absolutely no where, the only chance they have is a political approach.

They can't do much when the world has deemed them as a terrorist organisation and doesn't wanna speak to them anymore.
They also can't just sit there doing nothing while Israel keeps taking their lands and keeps making conditions for them horrendous.

Tends to happen when you suicide bomb and launch rocket attacks targeted at civilians.

And what are they achieving with rocket attacks?

As much as i want to bury this. People should watch this to know, war is never good.

If you need to watch graphic videos of people dying to know that war isn't good then your a bit simple.

Youtube is a site aimed at people of all ages would you think it's appropriate for a young child to see that? They were right to take it down.

As mentioned earlier in the thread there are plenty of videos on Youtube that are age restricted, and containing gore, that aren't taken down.

You quote the first comment from the Digg page linked in my OP, which was not my comment. But anyway, I would contend that people_do_need to watch graphic videos of people dying to know that war isn't good.

If there was more video evidence of the estimated one million people killed in Iraq maybe more people would realise that war isn't "good".

    a) then why don't you call Israel a terrorist state? They're far worse!

    b) Its called resistance. Its weak and ineffective but it shows Israel that they won't keep quiet and let Israel take over their lands and kick them out. They don't have the power to send F-16s and bomb strategic targets in Tel Aviv or something. But at the same time they can't just sit quietly.
Would you give up when someone much stronger than you kicks you out of your home and claims it as his?

Suicide a bus versus an attack in a video that clearly shows dead/injured Hamas soldiers. Wow you're so blind to anything that disagrees with your opinion of Hamas being nice people.

I saw more dead/injured civilians and children in that video than dead Hamas soldiers.

And most of the rocket attacks only lead to a few people getting injured and rarely you find people getting killed.
Its been a while since i herd of a suicide bomb attack in Israel.
