    £65 = €67 (@ 0.97 rate), presumably fitted. €15 cheaper than Eiretyres, add fitting/balancing another €15, that's €30 per tyre saving.

Not quiet Newry but Richer Sounds is the place to go - http://www.richersounds.ie/

Drop into Power City and check the TV's out, give Richer Sounds a shout. Excellent service, prices etc - after sales is second to none. They used to offer free delivery for Boardies also, not too sure if thats still on.

BTW dont work for Richer Sounds.

Ive spent maybe €100 in shops in the south in the last 4 months.
I even get my petrol up north now too as its cheaper there now.

On a monthly shop we spend about £150. Here we would spend €400 - €500 easily on the same shopping.

I dont feel a bit guilty about it. If you want my money down here give me value for it. Tax me more and i'll find more ways to spend less too.

:cool:can anyone tell me what exactly is in this shopping centre as there is only 4 shops mentioned are the likes of sainburys curry hidden around the corner???

Arriving from Newry or the South, Sprucefield Park is on the left and the major attraction here is Sainsburys which is a full supermarket and they also have a large Sainsburys filling station where you can buy Super Unleaded (98 RON) petrol not available in the south. Also on this side are B & Q, Argos and Currys. Over on the right is the Sprucefield Centre which has a large M & S and Boots. MFI was also a presence here but the unit is closed since they went into administration. There's also a nearby PC World which you can walk to from the car park and there's a standalone McDonalds here as well.

I have a solution. Someone should start a delivery service where they will pick up goods for us up the north for a small fee and deliver them down here.

Somebody else mentioned it about 200 million pages ago.
Think there might be problems with VAT and all that?
Mind you have heard about certain type of business people bringing back van loads of booze as it's cheaper then the wholesalers down here.

there seems to be alot of other places mentioned besides newry and was thinking of going to enniskillen but will ask the following.
    sprucefield
or enniskillen? for shopping. now part of shopping would be for a camcorder

I was considering Newry for the weekly/monthly shopping but have been checking sainsburys prices against Tesco and we would be saving nothing - some things are significantly dearer - just wondering what I am mising out on? I won't be buying drink or electronics so is there any point going up at all?

But went top a few stores Currys, PC World, Argos most are sold out of plasma and LCD TVS so would not recommended going up there till maybe late next week until they restock!!

You must be missing something. I have priced about 50 staple items and most are around 40% cheaper.

Went to Belfast for shopping today, bought a few items with my Laser card.

I took out £30 from Northern Bank ATM for lunch. I just checked my AIB online account, they charged me €36.14 for £30.:(

That's around 0.83P to a euro, now I'm worried about my Laser card transations. Thought i got myself a few bargains...

Noticed this myself recently and it just goes to show that the banks are quite willing to screw us even more than they have done already by giving poor rates for these transactions. Greedy **** that we (the Taxpayer) are bailing out. Hope they burn in hell!:mad:

    Ahhhh that feels better. :D

I wonder is there no relationship between Northern Bank and AIB that results in you getting charged a fixed fee as well as the rate? I just checked my a/c (Ulster Bank) and was charged €106.66 on taking out £100 from an AIB machine on Friday.

If you want cheap clothes from Next, go to the Next Clearance store in Portadown. Its 15 mins from Newry on the Craigavon road (at the big roundabout by B&Q you take the 2nd exit (1st = Armagh, 3rd= Belfast...). I got lots of shirts there for £4 that were down from in the 30s...

As far as I know, Northern Bank charge a fee for using their ATMs. For AIB customers, try using Ulster Bank or Bank of Ireland if you can't find a First Trust branch.

Not a bargain but something to watch for.

If you're going up North and you're a magazine buyer have a look for them up there. I just bought PC World in Eason in Swords. It's £4.99 according to the cover price or €8.10 in Eason. I know the VATs different and the magazines were probably bought by Eason before the £ went down but if you're up there anyway you can save a few quid on your monthly mags.

Is there an Asda in Newry?

    I didn't check their prices.

One example that jumped out at me was Uncle Bens Long Grain rice - 2kg is £6.99 in Sainsburys, €5.99 in Tesco.

A lot of products we buy down here are not available up there but looking at equivalents fur the likes of dairy spread, bread, beans etc. there did not seem to be any real savings.

THe carte noir price difference would be what I would be looking for on a range of products to make the drive worthwhile but we stocked up on coffee during one of Superquinn's recent sales.

are the milk and butter products you buy branded or own brand?

What about buying a TV Up North? and would it be compatable in the South?

Many years ago I brought a TV over from England and it only received some stations here, due to some UHF/ VHF difference between UK signals & here!

PS is Enniskillen a good place to go shopping up North?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 515 ✭✭✭ZOLTAN28

Sainsburys don't do Brennans and we generally buy Tesco's own bread.

They also don't do their own brand milk in 2 litre form but do a 2.27 litre for £1.53 which isn't too bad.

99% of your weekly shop will be at least 40% cheaper up there.
But by all means spend more money if you want to stay here for your rice.

    Just for fun.

List your 10 most expensive items in your weekly gorcery shop and then compare the prices.

Off topic but for rice go to any of the asian groceries if you're near one. I get 5Kg of Jasmine rice for about €6 in the Asian Market in Drury St. They come in bigger quantities and are cheaper again there but there's only so much rice you can eat (and carry).

No I am not blind - why are you so rude?

Can anyone else tell me whether there is an Asda in Newry or the nearest one to the M1?

I am checking Asda prices at the moment and it looks like they may be worth a trip although a lot of our usual products are not available.

Well spotted on the uncle bens rice, its the first staple item I've seen that around the same price down here. Incidently the ASDA own brand rice is cheaper.

Search this thread for ASDA to find store locations and other ASDA debate.

On the other hand there are loads of products that cannot be obtained down south. Plichards are one such item. Decent ginger beer. Crumpets. Those are like hens teeth in the south.
When I go up I generally stock up on things that are impossible to get in the south. There are serious savings on things like tea and coffee.
