Which machine do you do these in?

And holy crap 42.5kg x 12 reverse curls? My forearms need some attention methinks.

Tis done on the cable crossover stack with the cable coming out of the bottom position. Attach the long pulldown handle and grip out wide near where the bar bends. Concentrate on really keeping your elbows in tight and your wrists locked and get to curling. It's an odd exercise at first, but once you get a feel for it you'll love it.

And lol if you REALLY wanna kill your forearms, reverse preacher curls. And start light. I can't do more than 32.5kg x8-10

It was the Hercs annual club champs today and somehow I got roped into competiting. As usual!!

I'd always intended to do the weightlifting, but heard last night about 7.30pm that there was a good crowd doing the PL too so I said I'd give it a bash. So with a 3 day deload, 18 hours of notice and 0 hours of prep, I went in to do it raw.

Weighed in at 105.9 which was disappointingly light.

    Snatch:

    75/80/85x

    Clean and Jerk:
    100/110x/110

Pressed out the last snatch, it was a fair call but if I'd done more than one training session in the last 3 months I'm sure I woulda done a bit better! Same story with the c&j (well, I power snatched and power c&j'd!!). Pressed out the first 110, stupidly. Hit my 2nd 110 mega easy and may have been good for close on 120.... Ah well, next year!

I had to warm up for the powerlifting mid way between my c&j attempts so that was interesting!!

    Anyway the PL attempts went;

    Squat:
    220kg/235kg/250kgx

    Bench:
    130kg/140kg/150kgx

    Deadlift:

    220kg/235kg/250kg/260kgx

Everything was done raw, with the squat just in knee wraps. I reckon I've squatted 3x in the past 2-2.5 months so all things considered I should be happy. BUT the 235kg went SO well, I'm a bit pissed I didn't get the 250kg. I took it out all wonky and left the bar a bit high on my back and it kicked me forward in the bottom and there was no recovering. Still a 45kg comp PR in wraps, so can't be TOO sad. I'll do 250-260 next time.

Same story with the bench, I've flat benched ONCE in the last 3 months so I was a bit unsure going in. 130 was so easy, 140 was a piece of p!ss and 150 shoulda gone but it went to 4-6 inches and came back towards my face so there was no saving it, It was my 12th lift of the day so I was starting to get a bit tired then. 150-155 next time with some training. And that was paused... it woulda went mega easy as a gym bench.

Onto the deadlifts for attempts 13 thru 16. Haven't trained without straps in a loooong time so again I'd no idea what would go up. 220 was easy so I went to 235 for a 12.5kg all time convo PR. Again, that went easy so I had a think about it and decided 250kg was the way forward for a 27.5kg convo PR. Again, it went without too much hassle which surprised me A LOT. Tried 260kg but only had a 1 lifter break before I had to go back in.... Got the left side of the bar to above my knees but the right side didn't move as well so I missed the lift. I genuinely reckon it was there if i was fresh.

All in all, encouraging signs today. The best thing is that today I pretty much totalled raw what I did at last years world champs in full gear!!

Thanks to everyone who helped out, and to a special someone who knows who she is ;)

Should have some vids up tomorrow!

 **** dude you're turning into an animal! Fantastic work, especially for the conditions, to have pulled 250 after all that lifting to begin with-there must be loads more in you on a proper day. Well done.

Lolz cheers Brian. I still can't get over how smoothly it moved. 260 went to my knees in the same manner, and fresh it woulda gone all the way. I have this unique problem... When I had my shoulder op'd on, the surgeon had to change the entire structure of my right side. A lot of muscles were chopped up, shortened and reattached to make everything secure and as a result my right side sits noticalbe lower than my left. If you look at any of my pulls over say 90%, the right side of the bar moves more slowly. Both sumo and conventional. I get away with it on the light weights, but as I move up it presents problems. It's just something I've got to lift with unfortunately. If I get stronger I'll lift more weight. The problem will still be there, but it'll be there with 10-20kg more so I guess it doesn't really matter!!

Why did you need a shoulder op if you don't mind me asking? Sounds pretty extreme (or perhaps just the usual HSE hack job?).

I dislocated my shoulder 15+ times and I think pretty much every ligament/things that are supposed to hold it together were either torn completely, or hanging on by a thread!

EDIT: The surgeon that did the job came highly recommended and I couldn't fault him. I keep meaning to drop him a note to let him know how I'm doing but never get around to it.

The recovery was mega brutal. I pushed the physio hard and it still took 6 months before I could get my hand up over shoulder level.

Jesus why did you do a silly thing like that for!?! also, vids of yesterday pls!?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,234 ✭✭✭Malteaser!

    First of all, congratulations! :)

Secondly, I still can't believe you just decided to compete like that at the very last minute. When I think back to all your previous competitions, you usually have everything meticulously planned - not just your training, but also food for the day, camera etc, so yesterday morning seemed like a bit of a mess. Firstly, you didn't have enough food so I had to go to the shop on my way to get Jaffa Cakes and Lucozade, then when I got there, neither of us had a camera so I had to race home to get one only to realize when I got back that the bloody thing only had a few minutes battery left and no memory space. Not one of my finer moments, but thankfully Darragh was there to tape everything on his phone just in case the battery went.

It was very strange to see you weightlifting, I don't think I've ever seen you do any of those lifts in person before. Also, it was very impressive to see you warming up for the squat, being called to lift, getting your lift and then straight back to warming up again. I know your back is in bits but I can only imagine how the rest of your body is feeling today.

And finally, it looks like the recession has hit Hercs too. :p Check out the trophy that you gave me after the Hercs Championships last year on the right and the one you gave me yesterday!! :D

Haha I was young and foolish. It got so bad that any time I went to field a ball over head in gaelic, the act of extending my arm forcefully would pop it out.

Vid's tomorrow I guess. Gotta find a cable to hook my camera up first.

They couldn't afford to spellcheck the engraving either... have a close look at it if you haven't already :)

Fair play on making extra attempts, I had to lie down on the floor after my last deadlift.

It's such a shame you wouldn't learn the full snatch/C+J, you'd move some monstrous amount of weight. A 110kg power jerk is very strong.

Some serious lifting there, well done man. You say you've only squatted 3 times in the last few months and flat benched once, yet your strength on these lifts has gone up. What kind of stuff were you doing to bring these lifts up without doing the lifts themselves?

Thanks!! You had a real good day too. I was very impressed with the weightlifters stepping up to do the powerlifting.

I would like to learn the full lifts, but the thoughts of having to train with light weights for months just kills me. Plus I don't even have the time at the moment unfortunately. I guess I'll just keep getting stronger and lifting the ugly way! i'm confident I'd have done much more than 110kg if I had of jsut manned up on it for my first attempt. I have assed the first jerk and the bar was set badly it my hands, so decided I'd give the second one a right push and it went up mega easy.

    Well done on the lifts

Barry (not sure if you know him?) came close with 3 snatch attempts of 100kg. I know he's done it and more before, but it jsut wasn't there on Saturday. Think he clean and jerked 135kg. Squattted 170 in the powerlifting with some weight to spare too.

Sammi (again not sure if you know him) power snatched 90+kg I think. THink he pulled 180-190kg too.

When I look at the numbers those guys are hitting in the powerlifts I feel really ashamed I'm not able to convert my numbers better over into weightlifting!

It does actually... didnt realise that. Can't say I am interested tho tbh. I think James F is the only junior ever to total higher than me raw in Ireland too by the looks of things on the IDFPA record page.

Next year's my last year as a junior and I plan on hitting something special so I don't wanna lose focus by chasing after the open squat record when I've the rest of my career to do that. It'll fall one day. As will the open 100kg raw total too, but not next year (that's if Fennelly doesn't push it up even higher).

I'd have to check my log, but I'm pretty sure I've squatted 3x since 20/10/08. 170x12, 180x11 and 220x5 in wraps. I actually did 160x5 beltless as part of a deload a few weeks back too. I benched once since like the start of October doing 130x5 as part of my deload 2 weeks ago.

My "quad" exercises over the past 2-3 months have been squats, front squats and hammer strength leg presses. Hitting PR's of 180x11, 145x5 and 240x10 on the respective exercises in that time. I'd like to hit 200x10, 150x6 and 250-260x10 before getting ready for next years nationals from late Jan onwards.

My "hamstring" exercises have been stiff leg DL's, lying leg curls and standing single leg curls. PR on the SLDL's is 175x10 I think.

For my bench I've been doing A LOT of chest, shoulder and back work.

Chest has been; incline bench (PR of 110x5 I think?), dumbbell bench (50kg 'bells x10), Hammer Strength Bench (130kg x10 I think) and incline dumbbells (40kg x10).

Shoulder work is something I've started to push - machine presses, military press (65kg x8-10 I think) and seated dumbbell press of 32.5kg x9. Obviously my shoulders need A LOT of work. They're pitifully weak really. It's worth noting that shoulder work is done after 3 sets of chest work, each taken to pretty much failure, so it distors the figures somewhat.

My back strength's come up a lot. I'm a plate away from doing pulldowns with the full stack in TF for sets of 12. Pendlay rows have made a BIG difference (I think I've done 110kg x8-12 now). And my deadlifts strength's up a fair bit too.

    Hope that helps!!

I love writing posts like these because it makes me think about my training and what's been driving my numbers up and keeps me focused on what I should be doing.
