my first concert was westlife. though that was before my teens, so doesnt count, i dont reckon *very shifty eyes*

For me, I prefer Slipknot's older stuff. I guess it just holds good memories for me (ironically!). I do think Subliminal Verses is the best album, though. Korn are hit-and-miss, and I don't have any of their newer albums, seems like cack to be honest. Everything up to 'Untouchables' was class though.

slipknot just never held any appeal to me, really, i confess, i did just kinda dismiss them, between the music and the masks, i couldnt take them seriously, till i was babysitting and flicking through sky digital music stations (slobber), and came across ...*pulls a blank*... the one... with the houseparty in their old gaf... dude falls through ceiling... "i push my fingers into my eyyyyes... it's the only thing that slowly stops the ache... "... wtf is that song called? *complete blank*...
    duality.

yeah, found that and just went 'wow. awesomeness.'.

wish i'd figured it out before i saw them live, mind, and kinda ignored them. korn, i saw live, and spent ages listening to their stuff before seeing them so i'd be familiar with the songs, and still... just... *shrugs* nothing.
Yeah, I liked Green Day before 'American Idiot' too. That's when every Tom, Dick and Harry started to like them. They weren't cool after that :p (Just kidding!)

haha, i always hated that 'cool' thing about liking them or not liking them at certain times. but im not about to get into another green day selling out debate. sick of it! :P
I guess during the past few years, I started exploring punk and metal. I remember when Phantom FM was good, too. :D:P

maybe it's just cos twas illegal? everything's more fun when it's not quite legal. but aye, getting into punk more recently myself, got to see UK Subs for my birthday, and Stiff Little Fingers a month or so after that, absolutely amazing. bigger into the local punk scene here, tonnes of 40somethings with leather jackets, pistols tshirts, tartan trousers and stellcap boots floating around this city. i managed to befriend two of them, in fact, so gotten quite into the local scene... OIS II MEN ftw! :D

Aw, I love that song . Siamese Dream is brilliant too, as well as 'M. C. A. T. I. S' (couldn't be arsed typing that again!)

You saw them live? *jealous* :p

saw em live too :D and worse, my b/f roadied for them, before they broke up and anyone died (only a month or so before yer man died), played pool, drank piss and talked about kids with them. really cool peeps apparently. some pretty dodge stories too :P

I like 90's grunge as well, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, etc. All good and angsty! :pac:

oh man, i *knew* when i listed the stuff i was listening to at that time that i was missing out on a whole load of stuff i listened to...
Yeah, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, etc are all cool. I've been known to enjoy all that stuff. ;)

temple of the dog, mother love bone, anything chris cornell's ever done... ever heard any bad radio? eddy vedder's old band, have a few songs, really good stuff.

was thinking about this thread during work today, and realised that i was thinking of my teens as secondary school, completely neglecting to remember that i was 17 for most of college, and have been a teen for 2 years after that too!

i have to throw in The Tea Party - first time since linkin park that i got *obsessed* with a band, and not fallen so head over heels for a band since. chilli's released dani california while i was in 1st year college, fallout boy put out a few songs that i guiltily enjoyed, me and my best mate from college (<3), elbow, ride, clearlake, interpol i started getting into about the same time, too. go tme into a much more chilled kinda mood regarding my music taste, those bands. nine inch nails too... doesnt have to be heavy metal to do angry/bitter/dark well.

edit: radiohead - bends album, and everything by muse also played a massive part in all things to do wtih teenagedom.

Temple of Dog are played by a couple of my mate's constantly. ^^

Even went to New York to see them live although, it was just as I was starting to listen to them less and less. Twas still great though.

Now though, I never really listen to them but I was so into them it was untrue. I remember when I first listened to Ten, being absolutely blown away. Walking around school in a daze listening to that album. I miss those times now that I think of it. There's nothing better than being so into a band you struggle to enjoy anything else.

Even though I don't listen to them much anymore, they'll always have a "special place in my heart" (for want of a better phrase)

My favorate has to be muse, not just one particular album but every single song. I heart muse with passion. I also like flight of the conchords to the same degree.
A few of my other favorates are qotsa, rolling stones, led zeplin,,linkin park, artic monkeys, headhunterz and loads more.

    Not quite angsty though

No, that'd be Smells Like Teen Spirit.

Creep is one of Radiohead's worst songs.

    And it's "epitome".

so any of today's teens into MGMT?

cos they jsut remind me of being young and free and stuff. which i still am, to a degree, but, y'no, i gotta work for a living, and im living with my fella, and regard his teenage son as being of a different generation.

Creep's not at all a bad song. It's in fact one of their best songs. It's very 'obvious' but that's hardly their fault. Radiohead have a mixed relationship with it (see 'My Iron Lung') but then, that's all part of the same process - you create an iconic song, and people will define you by it. People are still happily trotting out the whole 'Radiohead are depressing' line on the basis of Creep and a handful of other songs from their early catalogue.

Smells Like Teen Spirit is even more ubiquitous and overplayed. I still love it. It's also the sound of selling out, commercialism and betraying your roots, but fúck it, it's a great song. ^^

MGMT are horrendously overrated. They're a decent bad, with a lot of potential and some quality choons, but a whole rake of fake scenester types seem to have co-opted them.

One of those bands that like the Ting Tings were kinda cool as a 'best band you've never heard of' but once they made the mainstream got overexposed. Familiarity breeds contempt and all that.

    i) A good suggestion, but I don't like the way you just dismissed my opinion outright.

ii) Opinion > fact. It's certainly one of their most over-played songs, but I wouldn't consider it too far below the standards of "Karma Police", "Street Spirit", etc.

iii) I am aware of how to spell "epitome", but thanks for going to the effort to point out my error. I was under the impression that everyone is entitled to a mistake now and then...

agh, i've done so much in the last few years, i tend to feel a bit older than my years, doesnt help my fella is 19 years my senior (in the space of a month, he'll celebrate his 40th and ill celebrate my 21st!) and has a kid older than my own sister.

which is the advantage of never listneign to radio, and not knowing other people in general. you miss out on the whole 'over-rated/overplayed' thing, and get to just enjoy the band in itself. dont have a radio in the house, and have only one music station, which i rarely watch (due to it being mainly cack, and stops playing music around about the time i get home from work).

I don;'t necessarily share it myself, but I think it's possible to overindulge. I know a few people who've 'binged' on bands and don't like them anymore. They listened to them obsessively and then lost interest.

    I'm an ancient and cynical 21. ;)

I go out a lot, I've not been out frequently for hte past couple of months because of college, but usually I'd be out 3 or 4 nights a week minimum. So you end up overhearing stuff like MGMT.

Plus, they're 'cool.' The two lads are pretty funky dudes from New Yawk, and people lap taht kind of stuff up. In the way electroclash or however you describe the Klaxons et al led to a whole wave of people dancing about in 80s clothes wearing glowsticks for a summer. (Ah the wet and merry summer of 07, how I miss you. :pac:) That always means a band gets overwhelming attention, and a whole attendant crowd.

I walked by the MGMT gigs in the Ambassador and asked a couple of kids who was playing and when I found out asked how long they'd be listening to them. Not long. :pac:

Lets see, Alice in Chains , Pearl Jam, nirvana, silverchair, bush, slayer, rage against the machine, soundgarden, therapy?. Generally music that was big at the time, while I was in school.
Wasn't really pushed about music until I finished school.

ha, older than me, so. ive only been out for live bands all the last year, with the exception of possibly tomorrow night, as long as ive been in nz. back in ireland though, my haunt was fibbers, so mgmt wasnt exactly pushed in my face then either. think my fella just heard it on C4 (kiwi mtv) one day, (fated to pretend), went 'hang on, that's a gud'n'... got his hands on the cd, and i fell in love. quite enjoyed hearing it in the final of 'skins' too.

ive kinda always been out of the loop as to what bands are cool, etc, my mates at school werent even vaguely into the same music as me, and my mates outside school had a varied enough influence so that my music collection has embarassing elements no matter who's looking at it :P

right now (like, this present moment), im feeling a whole tonne of love for Grinderman, and The Doors, and The Smiths... grooves were just done better back in teh day.

Definitely can happen. Goo Goo Dolls - Iris is such a song for me. Thought it was pleasant the first time I heard it. Then my best friend started dating someone, he played it about 100 times a day!! And because I heard it so much, don't like the song at all now.

I'd usually be in Fibbers, Doyles, Dorans, Pravda, Pod or places like that.

Some of my friends are maddeningly into music. The kind who spend their evenings talking about who the best guitarist ever was. Think High Fidelity levels of lameness. Others are into dance etc, so I end up with a more rounded taste than I intended. :pac:

I like the Smiths, the Doors are good, in fact great, but I only like them rather than love them. I always feel sorry for Jimbo and his dad though.

Oh, me not liking Creep has nothing to do with its popularity, or the fact that its overplayed, or that people define a band that offer SO much more by it, it's simply the fact that I really don't think it's a good song.

I'd also say it's more of a depressed student anthem than an angsty teenage song.

As for SLTS, I don't think it really sounds like selling out or anything, just a good song.

ii) Opinion > fact.

While I appreciate that some people are ever so sensitive about criticisms of music and tend to find any negative opinion without an explicit "This is just my opinion" clause offensive, I'm afraid I don't heed that. Yes, everything about music is opinion, I don't understand why people just don't take that to be an implicit aspect of any musical conversation.

btw, Karma Police and Street Spirit are all right, but nowhere near Radiohead's best songs.

Oh I'll not disagree with opinion then. ^^ Nah I like it, can see why some don't.

SLTS is one of my favourite songs, but it is kind of a sell out song. But then, I don't mind that. It brought Nirvana to a lot more people than anyone else from the genre.

Nirvana were always one of the more accessible bands from that whole scene in the first place though. I don't think the band actually anticipated Nevermind selling so much, I mean they fecked off to Europe to support Sonic Youth on their tour* right after it was released. Hardly something a band who wrote songs deliberately intended to be accessible and expecting to sell a lot of albums would do.

*On a side note, have you seen 1991: The Year Punk Broke, the SY video diary of that tour? If not you should try and get your hands on it, really great stuff, and there's footage of SY and Nirvana playing in Dublin and Cork too.

To go against the whole "angst" theme, here are some of my happy songs! :D

I'll add more when they come to mind.
