Its an alright main story, nothing to make you go "wow" at the end. One gripe I have with talking people out of things is that its too easy ! For example, it'd go something like this "I'm so evil, i'm going to destroy the world, its been my plan for my whole life".."No you shouldn't do this !"..."Why not ?".."'Cause its bad".."hmmmm okay then ! Thank you good sir".

It goes pretty much like that, even with main characters later in the game, takes away the feeling of actually talking someone out of a situation in a drawn out conversation, its just one or two dialogue selections after you pass a speech test.

I enjoyed the game, and I was with Sarky in hoping they wouldn't take away the fallout feeling of the previous games. I'm gonna reload a previous saved game and look around a little more, see what the criac is !

Traded in Far Cry 2 for this on friday, and went on a bit of a binge. Having massive, massive amounts of fun playing as a goody two shoes character, though I plan to start again after finishing as a complete bastard.
'Now listen up, cause I'm only gonna say this once: GIVE ME THE NAUGHTY NIGHTWEAR!'

    Also: 'Don't hit me!'

I was in GAME today buying the collector's guide (it looks so nice) and i saw they have a collectors edition of fallout that isn't the pip boy tin.

It was the game with a Brotherhood of Steel figure. Looked pretty cool. Not into collecting figures but i'd say it would be nice for someone who did.

EDIT: just reading through it. I knew i messed up my characters stats/perks

Been getting quite a few crashes on the pc version. Mostly lockups. Got 2 on the baby stage and another just before exiting the vault. Also locked up once when the game was starting up.

I never played any of the previous fallouts or oblivion etc. I am only in megaton too but so far so good. Seems good:)

Really enjoyed the game until the 'way to quick end'. Beat every side quest I found apart from 2 and just as I get to level 13 character and get the plasma rifle the game ends. I would say the game is about 1/3 the size of Oblivion. I am most bitter.

I just ordered this from play, reading the last few pages here I'm not sure it was such a good idea if it's so short. I can't believe the €20 difference between play and Game. Does anyone know why Game are charging so much?

still loving the game though though it crash abit to often on the ps3.

highlight for has to be the slaver coller.

Im playing a full on good character at the moment but I know il end up playing the game again to get some fun out of that item.

    Anyone know if the
Brotherhood outcasts have any quests or a base you can visit.I have seen them around the world but only in small groups.

Woo, got my copy in the work-post today. I know what I'm doing tonight, that's for sure! :D

Is it pathetic of me that I'm kinda excited to play this?

I don't recall the main quest in Oblivion being particularly long. The real game was in in the side quests. So how many hours have you played for dav_nagle?

i picked up the ps3 version in gamestop today, cashier asked did i want the collectors edition so i had a look at it... just a lunch box type thing with some cards and a fallout boy figure.. i assumed it would be crap so just bought the game on its own. but i am a long time fan of the fallout series, 1,2 tactics.

i wuda preferred a figure of a guy in brotherhood of steel power armour or something

did anyone actually buy the collectors edition? what do you make of it?

Yep, I got it. It is pretty sweet. I'm using the "lunchbox" to put some screwdrivers and the like in. The art book is nice too.
The bobble head fella is gas looking, I have it in my car. I took a look at the "Game Exclusive" which had a figure of the brotherhood of steel and it looked kinda cheap tbh.

Ive had massive PC issues with this. Mostly random crashes, but scarily last night i got massive artifacting which looked like my gfx card overheating. Its less than a year old!! Loads of people on bethesdas forums complaing of the random crashes and lockups tho. It needs patching, bigtime.
Having said that, i am enjoying it immesnely, i already would rate it higher than oblivion.

I was having a load of problems with it crashing, but started running it in windowed mode and haven't had a problem since, if that will help anyone.

I've played a good bit of the game now and am really enjoying it. But I just don't get the Fallout feel from it. There is bugger all of the style and humour of the originals. It's still a great game and a fantastic setting, but it's more of a daunting and depressing place than the originals were. It's almost like they had an idea for a game and slapped in a few Fallout references to get a bigger audience.

I downloaded it on the pc after my special edition failed to arrive in HMV. I had heard about all the crashes, and after many frustrating attempts I finally got it to work myself but lowering my resolution and turning off AA. But it still crashes every 30-40 min like far cry 2 with no error.

I had then decided that I'd pick it up on the PS3 instead but is that crashing too ?

I pumped over 80 hours into Oblivion. I pumped around 22 into Fallout 3.
I REALLY liked Fallout 3. I just like when role playing games have an 'OUT' at the end so you can continue wandering the wasteland. Mass Effect is way better and roughly the same length. In perspective there is a huge amount of highly unnecessary conversations with nearly every NPC, that is where Mass effect shined.

I had loads of issues with a version I got on bittorrent but none after I uninstalled it for a retail one I bought yesterday. Perhaps the one on the torrent sites is an older or nuked build?

Theres no real challenge to fallout 3 everything is really easy, you just have to put the time in to get it done, what it really needs is some really difficult mobs and bosses that require skill to kill,

Maybe i just havn't discovered any yet but i heard deathclaws are hard and i came across one yesterday and it went down with 3 shotgun shots to the head, i havn't even used mines yet cause theres no point,

I never played Fallout 1 & 2 so maybe Fallout fans are happy just to trot through content without it being difficult, i havn't even died till i take on a whole town for a bit of fun,

I know it's not a fps game im loving the rpg element aswell but they could of put in some high xp boss type chars,

Last rpg i played besides Mass effect was the FF series and that had some great challenges in it without effecting the rpg side of it,

So yeah fallout 3 great game but piss easy i could do it in my sleep

i think you can up the difficulty level in settings

That maybe, but what im getting at is i want some big pay off unique mobs and bosses, there's only so many super mutants and raiders you can blow the head off before it gets old and boring, i havn't discovered the whole map yet so fingers crossed theres something out there.

Completed the game, ran into them already, i just ventured up north to discover some new area's, done a fun quest involving a disbute with 2 super hero type chars antanenzier and mechanist, fun quest but still easy,

I just expected some bosses in an rpg game that would reward alot of xp like an FF game would have.

I agree with Humanji, it is very much a fallout game in so many aspects, but the writing lacks the sharp humor of the originals.

For example, when I went to germantown police HQ and tapped into the "911 emergency" terminals for a read, I thought "Oh, this should be funny". But no, they were actually written like real 911 calls, not a laugh in sight.

I still love the game, it could have used some more interesting quests and NPCs, a lot of them are fairly run of the mill and pulled out of oblivion, its just a shame they couldn't have got the former employees of interplay to work on some of the story elements.

Hopefully they will take on board some of the story criticisms floating around for when they plan a sequel or expansion.

Oh, Killoit, if you're finding it too easy, try knocking the difficulty up and make a new character with less of a gun-toting bias. My "gung-ho" character at the moment is having a blast (literally) taking out mutants and baddies with ease, but I plan on going the speech/science route next for a bit of variety.

Oh a quick question about the dog. If he dies, is there anyway of getting him back, and is there any real use for him at all? I know he can sniff out weapons and stuff, but I never found myself running out and so never needed him to. And in combat, he just gets in the way. Are there any missions that need him?

If he dies he's gone but just safe often and reload to previous safe if he bites the dust, i didn't have much use for the mutt i use another sidekick from vault 108 i think it was he's a super mutant with a mini gun and he kicks ass you get him just before the end of the game, he can take out a room of enclave on his own he does rob me of xp alot though

Enjoying the game alot, with all the details turn to the max it looks amazing. But i agree, the mobs are way to stupid/easy. Atm im taking on 10 raids/mutants at a time with the shishkebab sword. pew pew

Btw, perhaps this thread should have Spoiler tags from now on?

I got the game saturday but only got the chance to play it for an hour or so and its the type of game you need alot of time to play.

Just wondering can people tell me if theres any scaling in it? I absolutely hate scaling and it ruined oblivion....I read reviews saying it was gone but came across a few more saying it was still there?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,249 ✭✭✭Stev_o

Any PC users who have been experiencing random crashes or crashes when entering small buildings try turning your refresh rate down to 60hz at your desktop its worked for me and im playing this no bother now.

I am ashamed to say I only got this game yesterday, I am proud to say I went to bed at 7.30 am last night, and barely made it up for 4pm this morning.

My impression went from, hmm, the vault is fun, the whole opening play is very slick, and sets the scene well, looking good so far.

Then I was delighted to fight a bit, realise I had some freedom to kill or talk my way out, I killed, fps mode in my brain kicked in :o
I noticed that normal shooting, as I had read, was a bit awkward, but not in such a way as to ruin the game, I have practised levelling a quick headshot with the combat shotgun to the extent I can save vats for another target.

I then emerged and felt a bit iffy about the whole game world. The music twanged of oblivion, I went into a mine, like oblivion, found items, much more fun to collect ammo and guns than, pff arrows.
I was attacked by a random animal, oblivion, I found a town and familiar speech options, oblivion, I roamed aimlessly a bit on a side quest, very boring, oblivion.
I was cynical for good reason and was proved wrong later on in the main quest.

My enemies did seem to range from pathetic to powerful, regardless of my level, mole rat to mini gun equipped super mutant. Thats different, I was pleased. I then realised when returning to a previously cleared area, the enemies were gone, they weren't a random spawn but were dotted about as proper obstacles to travel, I was pleased again, it felt more real.
Enemies were also sometimes scripted, popping out of a broken truck, rather than being aimlessly placed, they were properly placed.

I continued the main quest, and fought a great battle through dc to the radio building, initially I ran from an onslaught of super mutants, I thought oh sh1t, I'm too weak to take on these lads, then the BOS attacked the mutants, and fought with me through the ruins.

This felt like a properly scripted battle, it was fps with depth. The areas I explore are unique and interesting, not anonymous caves. Items are fun to collect, not just clutter, bar the odd .32 pistol.

It seems this is a game in its own right, some of the oblivion influence was painful to begin with, but none of the flaws seem to be there, the game works, and is great fun, it has a depth of design, not too random in its gameplay, not to prescriptive, it feels real, and I cant wait to play some more.

Always fun to see how long it takes for the "finished it in 5 minutes on insane difficulty level and it's crap" brigade to post after a games release.

Game of the Year by a country mile imo.
