Ballyhaise, same temp and humidity, but calling it light rain at 12z.
more than 6mm there past 2 hours, I'd say most as snow.
As i quoted your post above, it's more likely a temp threshold they use alright this time the temp wrong side of 1C me thinks.

Interesting,I'm getting 5 minute bursts of wet snow as this stuff blows down from the hill.
More rain now than snow but a lot of wet flakes.
Dew point is rising rapid and is now gone above 1c so thats the end of the white stuff here I'd say except for some renegade bursts down from the mountain.

Air temp is 2.9c dp 1.3c

The front has passed over Naas now, light drizzle and sleet is all that is left

Lashing out there now, and bitterly cold.

    Tis shleet and no more.

If it hadda been 1c cooler there wudda been a load of snow as theres been a load of precip here.

In fairness, you called this pretty well last night.
Naas wouldn't be high ground as wouldn't most of Monaghan and my post Van has just arrived covered in snow.He says the ground is white just 2 miles from here and that theres a serious cover now up high around the croghan area, that would be circa 900ft or so though

Snow significantly heavier here in Ardee now and starting to stick.

Can someone tell me... what is it that determines whether or not snow will stick? Is it the air temp, volume of snow falling, how wet the ground is... I'm just wondering what has changed in the past while that has made the snow start to stick?

I know nothing about the science of weather at all :(

Snowbie and Weathercheck......what a difference a few metres makes!!! It's been a mix between full on snow and rain mixed with large snow flakes the past few hours here and temp has been between 2.4 and 2.5c. Still a lot of large flakes mixed in with the wind. Looking up into the sky and I can see millions and millions of snow flakes passing by......another 100m and I'm sure the snow would be sticking.

Oh dear, it just went up to 2.7c. Warmest all day. Not a good sign so.
