    Sei046 there is much that I am going into business for:

    its not just the studio. I would love in a few years to record every day of the week but I have many assets to offer youngsters.

    The goal is to create a music school with teachers in it teaching 10 months of the year.

    The second part of the goal is to have a recording studio at the back of my premises.

    I want to have 2 teachers employed, 2 rock schools a year, one in winter and one in summer and while all that is happening in the background my studio is developing a name for itself recording bands and backing tracks.


    I am holding back because I need cash to get at least a years rent up front. I am saving now at the minute so hopefully if everything works out I will be in a position to move out in Jan. I am banking on an awful lot, premises being a major factor.

    I knew a few producers who wont build a nice big studio because they are making too much money in a small box room. Platinum producers at that!

    Well, its worth mentioning the likes of steve from fastlane tuning some vox for me there. I was under some pressure and he offered his free time and the likes of that means an awful lot more than any advertising or promo cds in the world. Definitely jump at any opportunity to help out lads and go that extra mile because it could be the likes of that that gets the ball rolling for you and gets you a lot of respect.

    I know this sounds shallow but it is true. When people respect you for your overall contribution to an area that they love themselves.... they pay you well for that respect.

    It's a brave man who starts a new business at the start/middle of a recession.
    Remember that recording music is a "luxury" item to most people and luxury items are the first to go when people are worried about their jobs.

    I record 3-4 days a week and am well established but would not dream of moving into a commercial premises and have the headache of bills etc.
    The studio is a building beside my parents' house.
    Doing vocal sessions over karaoke tracks won't pay your bills. That geezer from Westlife tried to set up a studio doing that and he didn't last long!

    If you have have a slow month the bank/landlord won't care about your problems and will still want their money.

    Remember too that turning an empty building into a acoustically treated studio costs LOTS of money.

    If you do go ahead with it, best of luck.

    2. I am starting a music school and recording studio, bands, backing tracks, summer camps etc... not just backing tracks you mad egg!

    Did "that dude from westlife"'s studio go under?..I was told he actually gave a lot of young bands and the like breaks, as in gave em good rates and stuff..Next week im getting a band in that did their last album there..Id imagne it'l be a bit of a land going from a whatever a day studio in the big smoke to singing in my hotpress/vocal booth in the wesht..and paying quite a bit more for it too..ha..

    It was more like a Discotheque with a mixing desk in it .... 4 inch thick carpets , floor uplighters, white leather seating, a 50 inch TV in a 60 inch room.

    Jordan was going to record there but she thought it was too tacky .....

    Some nice gear though.

    Worst case scenario is my business fails and I have to move back home, which in all fairness is a tight spot, but it makes money and keeps me doing what I enjoy, recording, editing, mixing and talking lots of ****e. So who loses at the end of the day? Me? Yeah I'll have lost a big business potential but at least I can say I tried damn hard. Also it will either work or it won't work. The gods will send me minions to teach and record or they wont. I wont end up being a guy who said he was going to do this and that and had all these great ideas but made the mistake of pissing it all up against the wall because of personal issues. Not me amigos, no frigging way!!.

    No. Worst case scenario is the business fails owing back rent and bills so you walk away and move back home, then find out later, when you go to buy property, the landlord has an injunction against you.

    Having a partner to split the bills is rubbish.
    If you and your partner are paying the bills you are insolvent. The bills are paid for by the business before you take drawings (wages).

    Also, if you are doing a music school/ summer camps you will need proper training/certification before you deal with kids. As far as I know this is a legal requirement. There is always a chance of a "he touched me" claim. Not as far fetched as you might think.

    I think that's right. In my other life as a part time sports coach (yes that's right I'm sporty sort of), we had to do all sort of training for dealing with kids. Some of the stuff you have to learn is very strange indeed.

    Oh and isn't public liability insurance fairly pricey these days?

    How will I owe rent if I have the rent paid up front and keep a short lease?
    I have ran 2 school of rocks already, all good so far. I have a page of signatures from parents stating I am a teacher of excellent quality and trust.
    Splitting the bills works for many teams, why is it rubbish ?

    I don't see how a short lease is favourable if you are going to redesign and treat the interior. Your average industrial/office premises will not be a turnkey studio. Also if you start mentioning short leases to letting agents they will have nothing to do with you. You will come across as someone who is taking a "punt". Your average lease would be 5-25 years, but don't forget the lease is an asset that you can sell (hopefully) if you decide to pack it in later.

    A list of parents' signatures is worth nothing in the real world. You will have to get certified training and will be subject to background checks.
    You don't seem to grasp my point re splitting the bills.
    If you are sharing a house with someone you split the bills.
    If you are in a business partnership, the business pays the bills, not the partners.

    I don't want to come across as "the glass is half empty" but that is the way you have to think before starting a business. It is very easy to focus on the positives and neglect the negatives.

    Spot on there about the list of parents signatures, trackmixstudio.

    You are on dodgy ground doing stuff for kids without having someone with some sort of teaching/child care qualification involved, or having it officially sanctioned in some way. The potential to have the arse sued off you is huge.

    Ignoring any "he touched me" accusations, just from an insurance perspective it is just not simply a matter of organising a camp and away you go. If one of the kids injures themselves or has a turn or whatever, and someone decides to sue, the consequences for you could be pretty disastrous.

    I don't know where you held your previous rock camps, Damh, but if it was in your studio, from a health and safety perspective if one of them fell climbing the ladder and decided to take you to court, you would more than likely not have a leg to stand on.
