For those starting on the 7th September with me, I have it on good source that we will be a squad of 60 and will be known as the Greens....

    Cant wait to get started:cool:

Hi guys, sounds like I'm gonna be a green too, and it is sooo not my colour!!

Anyway how are you all feeling about it? I am pretty nervous about one thing only.....my fitness! Don't get me wrong, I have been working on it for months, but I'm not a naturally athletic person by any stretch of the imagination!! I am obviously gonna get stuck in now, but hope my lack of co-ordination doesn't hold me back!!

Congratulations Sooz...Don't worry, as long as you are doing plenty of running and lots of core strength work (sit-ups and press-ups) you should have enough basic fitness to see you through most of what they can throw at you..

We are all nervous, 59 others in the squad will have the same feelings of aprehension that you have, me included...It's fear of the unknown, but this is what we have all wanted, we are about to live our dream!

Look forward to meeting you at SRN on 26th August...

Thanks. It is nice so nice to be able to speak to people in the same situation, talking to family and friends is one thing but they obviously don't understand! One thing that is reassuring me slightly is that I have a distant relative who is a cop, and he has always been a big lad.....so if he can do it I'm hoping I can!!

I have to say though, just reading the starter pack, with everything else I can't wait to get started, it all sounds so interesting!

I suppose I may go and have a look at this 'starting in GV' thread, good job I cleared my credit card!!!

    Hi All
I start on september 7th as well. Been out running most nights and its killing me. I will have to start on press ups as its one exercise i have always been rubbish at and knowing my luck they will probably ask us to do loads:confused:.

Running every night???!!! Oh god, you're depressing me! I've started spin, which is a killer but at least it should improve my fitness! Really HATE running, I can just imagine me looking like Phoebe from friends, running down the road like a nutcase! But I suppose I better start! I'm also pretty much as weak as water......sounds good doesn't it!!

Oh well, I've booked in to get a programme done and I may move into the gym, I'm gonna be so buff by september!

Here's hoping all the people that aren't on boards are normal, not fitness fanatics like everyone on here! All I want is ONE person worse than me, it's not too much to ask is it???!!

Lisnsooz posted this and that has made me panic so I have been trying to increase my fitness levels - I've tried it and it isn't easy to start with.

" I didn't pass the PCA on the first try (tho - passed it at the midcourse assessment). They gave me a sprinting programme that you can do in any gym. It's as so":
warm up and stretch etc etc
treadmill at 1.0 incline (might depend on treadmill tho)
    2 mins @ 11kph
    2 mins rest
    2mins @ 12kph
    2mins rest
    1min @ 12, then 1min rest (do this 3 times)
    30 secs @ 13, then 30 secs rest (do this 3 times)
then warm down adn stretch holding stretches for 30 secs or so.

I found this was good for getting up anaerobic fitness. Sounds easy, but for a few weeks getting the two mins @ 12kph was tough, but you get it eventually :-)

    Lis...nearly at finish line!

ooo greens, for what i've heard the greens are always the controversial squad, the squad that gets in trouble! lol

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29 egwene

i tried Lisnsooz's sprinting program tonight in the gym, and i couldnt quite pull it off... the 2 mins at 12kph was just outta my reach!
hope i havent left this too late... im so far off being able to run 3 miles its scary...

    Also in on the 7th!

Easy to recognise, I'll be the going grey, past-his-prime-overweight-guy that makes you all feel so much better about your own fitness levels (in a kind of a schadenfreude "at least I won't be last" way) ...:o

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 60 ✭✭soozb82

Fiacmar.....thanks god for you!!! We can keep each other company at the back of the class then!!

But i keep telling myself if we got through the fitness we can't be that bad....and I know a chubby cop, I can safely say that I am fitter than he ever was and he managed it, so there is hope for us all!

Deal!! We'll take it handy and have a grand chat as we get lapped by the ultra-fit future-TSG boys and girls :P

I think PSNI will have to make the lanes wider for running as its sounds like we will all be running at the back together;) Perhaps if all 50 recruits run at a slow speed they would increase the time limits:)

Sounds like a plan! I am getting the impression we are gonna be the lazy ass group of this intake..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 60 ✭✭soozb82

Quiet in here! Maybe I am the only person with an unbelievably boring job that doesn't really require me to do any work....or maybe everybody else is getting their last minute holidays in.....well enjoy if that is the case!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,258 ✭✭✭carlty888

You're definately not the only one wth an unbelievably boring job. That's one of the many reasons why so many of us want into the police. A job that is not boring!

(Disclaimer: Yes, I understand that there will be elements of the job that are boring, but the job, as a whole, is not)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 60 ✭✭soozb82

Yeah the pros of this job are the nice working hours, flexi time etc but seriously I can hardly put the day in!! 30 years of this would drive me insane!!

Not quite, just temping at the moment! Got my civil service job in the pipeline tho, just keeping it in the background in case I get kicked out of PS for not being able to do 60 push ups and run 6 miles in 40 mins.....or whatever your man said!!

God I hope it doesn't come to that!!!!!

i was wondering what everyone is planning on wearing tomorrow to the SRN?

  • Registered Users Posts: 87 ✭✭New Recruit

Was thinkin the same myself Euge....Smart Casual I think i.e. Trousers and a shirt.

What is normally worn at these nights?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,012 ✭✭✭MrsGeneHunt

I have it on good authority (from someone in the hotel at the minute) that very smart is the way to go for SRN. Jeans/Casual will be frowned on big style. For a job where the uniform is paramount, I think you'd want to be demonstrating you can be very well turned out.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 65 ✭✭Par827

    Evening all,

just getting my stuff together for the return to Hotel GV so thought I'd wish all those attending SRN tomorrow good luck. It's not as daunting as you might think, there'll be lots of talk from head honcho's etc and then you'll get chats from your instructors, before getting fitted for uniform. We'll all be there escorting in our yellow flashes ( you'll be Green !), and your wives, husbands, partners, parents etc will all get a guided tour of the luxury facilities. You'll all then meet up in the canteen before being sent on your merry way to wonder if you're really doing the right thing !!!

    DON'T PANIC !

Take as much in as you can and feel free to ask anyone, anything that you want.

    See you there ! :):):)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 60 ✭✭soozb82

Dunno how much use this is to you if you are a male but anyway.... I'm wearing a skirt and top, basically something I would wear into the office. Well nicer than what I usually wear, but if I worked in an office where anybody cared!!

I can't wait to see what it is like, and what everybody else looks like, have a good nose basically!!

    Folks,

The dress for SRN is definitely suits or equivalent for females !!
    Anything else is frowned upon.

    Whistlin' Flute it is then:cool:

Look forward to meeting you all tomorrow night...

    UP THE GREENS...

Well greens, what did you all think?? Excited? Nervous? I was actually quite reassured by everything I heard, although there was plenty of firmness and rules and regulations talk, I thought everyone seemed nice and there was a nice atmosphere...

& LOVED trying on the uniform, felt like a wally in the boots mind you but it still made it seem so real!

Was anybody else in the first group alphabetically? Seemed to be a lot more men than women I thought

Still trying to come to terms with the definitions - can write the 10 out but keep missing out one or two words each time. Their is know way I could write the whole book word for word - PANICKING.

Just spent 2 hours on the definitions and have only memorised 2....These suck!!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 721 ✭✭✭goodcopbadcop

Might of asked this before but how do you have to recall these definitions. Do they make you say them out loud one at a time or how is it tested?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 97 ✭✭conor123

and how long are they? what are we talking about? a few lines, a paragraph, half a page etc etc etc you see where im going:D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29 egwene

I kinda know most of them now, but keep on getting some words muddled up... It's a bit of a nightmare!

GCBC most of them are only a few lines, but there's a few nasty ones thrown in for good measure :P

I've been learning them by basically chanting them out loud over and over!

  • Registered Users Posts: 222 ✭✭Wanalaugh

Did I read correctly and see that someone know 10 defs already, and someone else has done the whole def book lol. us guys all struggled with the and we where working through them for 7 weeks before we got the exam. And in the exam, you must know them word for word. Any wrong words and the def means nothing, so its would be marked wrong......
If you know as many as you say, then well done :D

    wanalaugh

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 721 ✭✭✭goodcopbadcop

I could be wrong here but it seems a good way to learn these definitions would be to write them out over and over like you did in school when you were bad :D

I must refrain from forgetting to get my homework diary signed
I must refrain from forgetting to get my homework diary signed
I must refrain from forgetting to get my homework diary signed
I must refrain from forgetting to get my homework diary signed

that is one suggestion, or writing out a few and sticking them on the wall and looking at it all the time.

Speaking of lines there I remember a boy in my class getting some and he typed them out on the computer, copy and paste job. He was actually surprised that the teacher did accpept them.. true story :p

How many did you know before going in?

  • Registered Users Posts: 222 ✭✭Wanalaugh

To be honest, the first 3. The 3rd one is a nightmare as you will see.

Remember guys if this board is open for all to see, just be very careful what you write in here. It can give to much away for what happens up in the hotel. Also, dont mention any times, places, names etc this can set you or someone else set up. There is still a threat out their chaps. Make it as hard as you can for those guys out there that want to cause us harm....

Anyhow back to the work again. I find printing them out on an A4 page and making the writing bigger and breaking them down into sentences makes it easier. I then type them out on the laptop instead of hand wrting them. Hand writing is a pain in the bottom lol. Im lot slower than the rest of the guys at doin them. So if its a small def, then ill read it one night for an hour, and then re-do it the next night etc. Usually takes me about a couple of hours to do one. Some of them can take 3 or 4 nights ie 1-2 hrs a night. Especially the 3rd def as ive said before.

    wanalaugh.

ps, im ofsky, defs to learn lol

How did you get them before going in?

  • Registered Users Posts: 222 ✭✭Wanalaugh

To be honest, my mate was in the hotel a while back and he gave me his copy and gave me the heads up. But as you will see when you get in, there was a shock in store for us. The defs are now part of the course and there are 3 exams on them. Before it was just a matter of writing them down in class and then yourtrainer marked them, only 3-4 at a time.
If I was smarter, and knew for definite that I was getting in months ago, I would have borrowed all his books and started reading them to get the idea of whats to be done into the big void between my ears lol.

do we definately need to know the 10 definitions word for word on intake sunday?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 53 ✭✭Jonesville

you wont need to know 10 for intake sunday unless thats what they told you at the SRN. our first test was monday which is week 5.

do try and get the first 2 in your head if you can, we got a spot check on the Caution on the first sunday, no big deal though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 721 ✭✭✭goodcopbadcop

im not going to worry too much about it, the majority of people going in and have never seen this forum and therefore know nothing about definitions or anything else. They cant expect people to have got a heads up from a friend and know stuff before even beginning training ;)

  • Registered Users Posts: 87 ✭✭New Recruit

You get a copy of the definitions at the SRN, with a list of which one you are supposed to know on the first day.

There isn't a chance in hell I am going to know the 10 they asked for. I'll battle on through though and get as many as I can learned.

Could someone in the know clarify something for me please?? What exactly is the dress code for the first few days? I know casual and all that but do we need to be in sporty type gear for activities, or just what you consider comfortable for sitting around yakking??

    Thanks in advance!
