Suck it up and look for accomodation in Dublin, of course.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,011 ✭✭✭cHaTbOx

I didn't get emails about my electives so that's a good thing right?
    Least something's working out.

    :confused::confused::confused:
    I didn't get campus accommodation!
Everyone I know here got it (that's about 8 people)
    except myself and my sister.
I know this guy who lives near me who got it too (last year)!
I think it's because we weren't born in Ireland, that's the only difference,
i got higher points then some of them, and same course as two of them.
    So that must be it!
I have no home and don't know where to live now!!?
Agh! the train from here isn't even early enough to take every morning, unless i travel to another county to get the early one there, but that'd mean getting up at 4 every day.
    *sigh*

    What am I to do???:(

Look that's the way the cookie crumbles but look at the positive
You can find a place to share with your sister

    http://www.findahome.ie/

    Look here
I nearly had to look for a place for myself and It may even be better for your studies.

    Under requirements for language modules
it says requirement = no prior knowldege.

Does that mean if u were hungarian or something,
    you couldn't do hungarian?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,208 ✭✭✭Économiste Monétaire

Obviously if it says "excluded: no prior knowledge" then yes you are excluded, if you're already familiar to the language. It's not their for giggles and lollipops.

been in dunlin for the last 5 days looking and calling.
I keep getting the ole "i'll ring u back in 5minutes"
    or "Student?" *hangs up*
viewings on Monday at soonest, but pretty darn expensive

Unfortunately, that's a fact of life when looking for rented accomodation at this time. What areas are you looking for accomodation in? The areas around UCD are very expensive, you may be able to find somewhere cheaper if you are willing to look a little further away from college.

Also, if your sister is older try getting her to deal with landlords, they *hate* 18 year olds.

Probably a stupid question, but how exactly does one go about doing extra electives?

I'm gonna be doing B&L so all my modules are mandatory but I'd like to do an extra elective in maybe French or something? I know I'll have to pay but I'd still like to do it. :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,158 ✭✭✭Stepherunie

If it's a language course go and talk to the people in teh Applied Language Centre.

You could always take language courses as extras, even before Horizons so i'm presuming you can still nowadays.

    Thanks!

And Beebebutterfly, there's a good few places on daft.ie
You mightn't get right beside UCD but when I was looking last week for somewhere off-campus there were houses in Ranelagh/Dundrum/Rathmines, PM me if you like and I'll send you some links :D

Would that not mean I'd be allowed do it.
But no, I don't think it said that.

8sigh* I'm 17 but I have my older brother looking.
Any suggestion as to where I can stay until I find a place, for 3 days or so, because I want to go to the orientation -this Wednesday.

It said you can choose extra ones on the 6th of september.
Just go to the registration page on the day and it'll be obvious from there.
Keeping in mind that you mightn't get what you want because places may be full

You said you know 8 people who got campus, why not ask if you can sleep on their couch for a couple of nights?

    I want to do Spanish as an elective. The most advanced class offered at stage one seems to be Spanish General Purpose 4...is that right? The prior learning requirements are ;
Leaving Certificate (Ordinary: A1-B2, Higher: C3-D3) or approved equivalents to CEF (Common European Framework) B1

I got an A2 in my leaving and I really want to keep it up. I hate how easily you can forget a language! So, does that mean I can't do this course?? I mean the grades there are oddly specific...or am I just mis interpreting them.

    Thanks.

Take a look at this module. It seems more geared towards you.
To take this module students are required to demonstrate a prior knowledge of Spanish at the level of at least Leaving Certificate Grade C (Honours) or equivalent.

Very welcome. It's not the same as Applied Languages modules but it might be more interesting. There is a "Spanish General Purpose 5" (a level 2 module) but you're required to take 4 (which is the one you had problems with), according to the Applied languages site. You could always change your mind before the 19th of September if you end up not liking the module.

    Good luck with it ;)

I, personally, would take that to mean you need to have completed Gen. Purpose French 4 AND - either leaving cert French (A1-C2) or CEF(Common European Framework) B1. Mostly because it's a level two module. But, you should ring the Applied languages centre and ask them to confirm.

Well yeah it's just that I'm thinking of doing arabic.
i speak it at home with the parents (not fluent though),
but I can't write or read
and I know the course teaches the reading and writing which I could do with,
so now don't know if I should drop the module or keep it?

It's african arabic (I guess you can call it that) that I speak but as I said not fluently and I didn't go to a school to learn, just from talking to others.
Would I be allowed keep the module, there isn't a more advanced one and since we'll be doing beginners writing I think I would benefit frrom it??

Or should I ring the languages office on Monday?

Hi, I got offered Commerce UCD in the second round which I've now accepted. I have no information about registration/orientation and can't do so until sometime next week when my application is processed.

Will I miss out on reg for electives?
Am I out of luck for campus accom?
Are there any compulsory things that i have to do next week?

    Thanks!

If u accepted today u should be able to register in like 2days.
    username is cao number
    password is date of birth

So u'll be in time for module registration.
Not sure about accommodation, but I didn't get it so there mustn't be places left, not sure though.

You can ring the offices or personally go into the applied languages centre in the Daedalus building. They have people there to help you out in picking the language electives. They will asses your competence in the language and you may end up doing a higher graded Arabic course.
Same goes to people taking other languages as electives. Visit the applied language centre, you can even learn Magyar (Hungarian) if you want.

I was wondering. Will I be ok waiting until the 3rd to register my elective modules. I have my academic advisory meeting on Wednesday and I'd rather wait till after that so I can get advice, I don't want to take too many psychology modules but I don't want to take useless ones from elsewhere either.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,208 ✭✭✭Économiste Monétaire

Go broader electives are provisional until the 6th of September so you'll still have to same chance to get the module by lottery, i.e. you won't be given a different weight in the lottery by registering on the 3rd. Unless you're talking about in programme electives, they're first come first served.

okay just something that ive been wondering about.

doing arts dn012.in the welcome pack and on the timetable for orientation week it says that i have to go in tomorrow to pick up my student card and thursday for the advisory meetings etc. and for the welcome from the president of UCD.then theres the "taster lectures" after that.just wondering do you actually have to go to the taster lectures because i know theres lectures on wednesday too but i dont know do i have to go to those ones too. by the way i am in the "surname n-z" group.

You don't have to do anything - especially for Arts. The only thing you should really do is pick up your student card. After that it's up to you. Nothing, really, is compulsory. You'd probably be better off sitting on the toilet than going to the welcome speech by Heir Brady.

actually one more question....are the Student ID's photographic ID?
