Are you surprised? This is pretty common as an anti-fraud measure.

Most banks will allow you to give them multiple accepted delivery addresses in addition to your home address.

what annoys me most about the changes (having a tag for years for daily use)

If I need to switch cars with my wife for a day I either have to have a tag for her car to pay the same toll...

From what I understand from eflow.ie , they compare recorded reg plate with plate stored against tag account - so if you use tag in different car, they will treat you as unregistered / video registered (if you have done so).

And the claim that you can't re-register the tag to other car (due to technology used)

At least in the past I had the option to put the tag into other car (and nobody ever sent me nasty letter...) or throw in 2 €.. - still paying same toll as using my car!
Now I get penalised when my car is getting serviced, etc.....

    Another scam for money making..

Has anyone in charge ever thought of handing out leaflets at the toll booth to give people that use the m50 easy access to the info they need?
Instead of flashing 5 DAYS on those electronic signs....

I thought someone posts here already saying you can update your reg plate on the web or phone?

They've been doing that quite a bit.

Well yes you are right. However, I don't think this is officially confirmed... (and most importantly can i swap back) Also, if the change over takes a few hours, if I apply for change - system fault prevents the upload - can I dispute and only pay what is due?

I used M50 every day (except 4 days last week) - never seen anyone handing out anything.... (maybe cause I use the eazypass lane???)

I applied 10 weeks ago (to avoid last minute problems), got confirmation letter and all... still no sign of a tag.
I checked on the eflow site and it said I don't have a tag on order and haven't registered a payment method... what a shower of fup uck's

Has anyone received a tag yet?

I received an email from eflow today saying that the tags were being delivered and not to worry if it doesn't turn up in time as they will just rollup the charges on to the tag when it arrives.

"They can't fine cars not registered in the state so they are exempt"

Guys, Im living in Derry and will be home for the weekend. So travel through the west link in my northern registered car on Sunday, then what?

I found the above quote on a different website but i can't find a definite answer. Anybody abe to clarify the situation. Sorry if already discussed elsewhere

The NRA say they will use private investigators to find the owners of foreign reg vehicles.

Just pay for the toll in an Irish shop that supports Payzone while you're down here, pay on the website or pay on the phone.

Interesting! So will they bother is the question. Is it a scare tactic!

Its rediculous, I have to go and find a shop in the south while I am driving all the way up a motorway from that toll.

    or

When I get back up north the thing that should be most on my mind is getting down to the internet cafe to pay the toll

    or

let them encourage driving whilst on a mobile phone as you try ring it in as you cant ring 1890 numbers from the north.

I know you are saying just pull in to the hard shoulder to ring but when your making a 3 and haf hour drive the last thing you want is to stop for this rubbish.

Plus, by the time you ring up and pay it you'll be billed in call time on your phone so your €3 toll now becomes more like €4 or €5

Does the website allow for northern cars to register or is it just southern number plates accepted?

I'm assuming you pass through a small town or village at some stage from Derry to wherever down South East you're going. I'm sure also petrol stations. You'll probably have to stop for petrol at some stage too. Bound to be a shop there.

Do you not have internet at home? Ok, but you still have 2 other options.

As for phoning you have a couple of options:
    # UK / NI: 0845 30 15 405
    # International phone number: +800 50 10 50 11

I hate the toll as much as the next person but in this day and age it's not that difficult to find a method to pay it.

Tags are a scam on M50

NRA/eflow admitted on Morning Ireland 26th Aug 2008 that eflow tags may not be sent in time, but that it doesn't matter as the cameras will verify you and you will be charged as if you have the tag.

    So...
Begs the question. Why charge EXTRA for video only registration?
Why bother with tag if you ONLY use M50 toll?

I agree with the tag / video thing. Tag seems a bit redundant really. The only reason I can see (and I think someone else posted it in another thread) is that sometimes the camera images may have to be verified manually and the more tags there are then the less images to verify for video.

If they want to charge the foreign reg'd cars, shouldn't they let their reg numbers be taken in this video toll thingy then?( I mean to be able to pay in advance by credit card) That is assuming they don't take them already.

I dont have internet access all the time, no. I was not aware of these international numbers so thank you.!

I am not convinced they will track the foreign cars. It will be far too much hassel for them. It will be worth it for me to try firstly by not paying, and then seeing do they send a letter which will then leave me with a bill of €6. At least I will know where I stand then!

The only way they can justify the 12 euro admin fee is to give you a tag so that you feel you are getting something when the reality is you don't need them.

I got a tag from eflow but I'll be putting it in my glove box and hoping the cameras don't pick me up everytime.

Scam - but what are the public doing about it (me included) - nothing. We have become drones to be fleeced.

They probably won't try too hard if your number shows up only once or twice. If you are somewhat regular though I'd say they will call in the debt collectors.

GB & NI cars will be easy to track (assuming legit of course), lots of little debt collection deals done to sort those out. But as above a tourist going once each way may be ignored, especially if there are thousands of others potential dodgers owing much larger sums.

One thing to remember is that the agencies will be doing this for profit!

I assume it's because they're legally obliged to accept other toll tags and to allow their customers to pay for other tolls through them. Without the tag, there's no way to do that and they'd be in breach of their (betflow eire) contract.

On a practical level, tags are probably more reliable than number plate recognition so it's less work for them.

It's not all motorway from the M50 to the border.

Talk about being pedantic.... OK the last few km's are HQDC!!! Totally irrelevant to this topic and the posters point.

Seems a bit silly he would mention it so if it wasn't relevant to his point.

tried to see if this had already been asked in the many threads but couldnt come across it.

what if you dont have a tag and arent registered for video recognition and you are say on your way from Cork to Dublin Airport....are an M50 toll user once a year....arrive at the airport, check-in and off you fly to wherever for two weeks.

Is it a case of tough sh*t if you dont phone or go online to pay your €3.00 whilst you are on hols?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,433 ✭✭✭markpb

Nope, it's perfectly easy to pay. You can pay over the phone, go online in the airport or at your destination or you can find a payzone outlet at the airport. There are three of them.

absolutely, in theory but in reality the last thing on peoples minds when they arrive at an airport to check in or board a flight is to to pay a bill such as a toll fee or an ESB bill etc. It's going to catch many people out I believe.

True but where do you draw the line? I forgot to pay it because I was in the airport. I forgot to pay because I was on my way to a funeral? Maybe I was rushing to hospital for my pregnant wife?

If you have a credit card, ring them while you're driving through or as soon as you park your car. If there's no deadline, people will take the piss.
