is it worth waiting to update to fw2.0 or does it matter
    thanks

    Just an quick update:

Firmware 2.01 is now available which most notably fixes the slow typing of SMS messages and the slow backup times in iTunes. But it DOES NOT work with Pwnage yet.. they will be releasing a version shortly which will allow you to upgrade though.

And also a beta version of Installer 4.0 (that is compatible with 2.0) is also available. Instructions on where to download, and how to install it below:

    Good luck!

Doesn't matter but there's probably not much point of updating to 2.0 at this stage. May as well wait a few days for the iPhoneDev team to release the new version of Pwnage and just update to 2.1.

Could be just me but after upgrading my 2G iPhone to 2.0 the silly popup for call forwarding active has reappeared. This appears every time I make a call on my phone. Here is how I fixed it:

Required software: MobileTerminal, Erica Utilities (both available in Cydia)

You need to have some clue of what you are doing or you could screw up your phone and need to restore it. Backup before messing with this and if you have doubts then get someone else to do it for you.

    1. Start MobileTerminal. Enter login. For username enter root, the password is alpine
    2. Change to the correct directory by entering the following two lines. This is case sensitive and note the spaces after cd.
    cd /private/var/mobile/Library
    cd 'Carrier Bundle.bundle'

    3. Run the following command to convert the carrier plist file from binary to XML. This utility is part of Erica's Utilities.
    plutil -c xml1 carrier.plist
    4. Enter the following two commands to prevent the annoying popups. The command is a minus zero. It is all case sensitive so make sure capitals and small letters are correct.
    plutil -0 ShowCallForwarded carrier.plist
    plutil -0 ShowCallForwarding carrier.plist

    5. Job done. If you wish you can reconvert the file back to binary but it will still work fine without this step.
    plutil -c binary1 carrier.plist
    6. Restart phone (power off and back on)

Note: if you do not log in as root then the changes to the file will not succeed. You won't get an error to say they did not work but after restarting the message popups will still appear.

Hi There, I've been using my iphone with ntl broadband at home through a buffalo router for the last year or so. I have just changed to an eircom wireless broadband account but can't get my iphone to recognise either the eircom wireless a/c or even the same buffalo router when I connect the eircom modem through it.
It finds both the eircom a/c and the buffalo a/c but when I tell it to connect to either one it says it can't connect and I just wonder if there are some settings I need to change to go from NTL to eircom.

I'm not sure if I've explained this very well but basically I can't connect up to my new wireless a/c at home and would appreciate any help any of you might be able to provide.
    Thanks in advance,
    Sunny.

No nothing special you have to do is your wifi encrypted the default with eircom is wep u should really change of to WPA you will need the password for whichever type you use to connect

Ps make sure you are trying to connect to the correct eircom network not one of your neighbours

Long and complicated is right.. but fortunately for you, that's an out-dated guide. Basically, the tool (Pwnage) to unlock, activate and jailbreak the 2.0 firmware was initially released for the Mac OS only. But people found a method of tweaking it so it would unlock a 2.0 firmware iPhone on Windows.

But since then, they have released WinPwn which is a much easier and less complicated method of unlocking, activating and jailbreaking your phone on the Windows OS.

Step by step instructions here, and a video detailing the step-by-step process here! If you've any problems, let us know!

Stick the €30 in the post for me! :D;)

Yep, it'll be fine to use regardless of if you're roaming or not.

thank you so much for that guide basquille it worked a treat, i got the phone activated & unlocked & i think jailbroken???

just got back to ireland yesterday & im still lovin the phone finding new things about it all the time!

but i cant seem to download anything from the app store....when i tried to download anything when i was america if i hit the install button it cut back to the 'home page' where i could see a faded icon of whatever i was trying to download then after a couple of seconds the message would come up:

'your account is only valid for purchases in the ireland itunes store'

fair enough i thought itl work when i get home, but alas im stil getting the same message here in ireland
i dont know what i can do to change this......any ideas???

also what good sites are there to download different apps like video recording, different sms modes etc.. for FW 2.0??

    thanks.............

Try logging onto your iTunes account on your PC, change your iTunes store location and carry out a sync. That should correct the problem!
    Changing Your iTunes Store Country

It is not possible to change the iTunes Store country in use on the device itself. To change this on your mobile device, go to iTunes on your computer, change the iTunes Store to the country you want to use on your mobile device, then sync your iPhone or iPod touch with your computer again. To quickly change to the correct country for your account, choose Store > Sign In. If you are not using the correct iTunes Store country for your account you may see an error message advising that your account is only valid for purchases in the iTunes Store for your country when you try to download from the iTunes Store or App Store on your mobile device.

Outside of Cydia (which should already be on your phone) and Installer (which is still in beta mode with few apps), there aren't a whole lot.

Believe it or not.. there's still no Video Recording app for the 2.0 firmwre, but is for 1.1.4.

Hey guys, is there anyway to stop all your music, contacts, photos etc being lost when one updates to a new WinPWN firmware?

I updated to 2.0 from 1.1.4 and lost the lot:-( I had though the iPhone was backed up. When I went from 1.0.2 to 1.1.4 all my contacts and music and everything was intact?

Seems odd that you lost everything.. I used Pwnage (on Mac) - carried out a backup beforehand but the backup restored to my device without problem.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,203 ✭✭✭✭Basq

Good news: Pwnage 2.0.2 (for Mac users) and Installer 4 beta will be released later today.

    Details here!

In my experience, sometimes if you change sync settings and choose "Apply" it will sync but not backup. You need to choose the "Sync" to force full sync and backup.

Try re-installing iTunes - see if that makes a difference. It wouldn't be a US credit card you signed up with, would it?

Well, this page is 26.34 KB! ;)

They offer a 1GB bundle for €15 I think, but it's only available to BillPay customers. Think both Meteor and Vodafone offer EDGE packages to PAYG, but not O2. Could be wrong though!

Not finding anything about decent data bundles on the meteor site for PAYG, shame as I could do with one as I'm getting a iPhone 2G shortly

Only thing I could find is http://www.meteor.ie/personal/bill_pay/add_ons/data_add_ons/ but its billpay

Actually yeah, now that I think about it..

I have a mate who has an EDGE bundle on Meteor, but he is on billpay, not PAYG.

Which version of WinPwn are you using?

Be sure to use WinPwn 2.0.0.3 as those 16XX errors were addressed and fixed in these versions. The process is pretty much the same.

    Download links for 2.0.0.3 below:

    Yep , I'm using 2.0.0.3 RC1

The 16XX errors are extremely vague.. as far as I know, there's no definitive way to fix it. People have various methods of fixing them:

Some re-installed iTunes to the latest version, others uninstalled a previous version of WinPwn they had installed, some people used a genuine iPhone cable as opposed to an iPod cable - and it worked!

Try following this guide step-by-step here!

Ya was messing around with cydia there and manage to remove most of my apps, have to do it all over again!

    Careful now!

Hi Gary,+ folks,,,Seen your comments above.. delighted to say I gave in a bought an Iphone on Thursday , eBay,, mint condition and totally brill,, whooohooo its soooooo cool,, was looking back through pages for any info on Cydia ( seen a fair few negative comments from people about Cydia in general ) . Right now Cydia says there are 6 downloads available, then a message says " I have 4 Essential Upgrades ,, if not performed you are likely to encounter errors: 2 options are Upgrade essential and Ignore ( Temporary ) I,ve been ignoring ;).

Question,, am I leaving myself open to bricking or messing up the phone with Cydia downloads ?. Can damaged be done inside Cydia..
Like a newborn child here.. learning each time I look at the phone.. have not slept properly since Thursday :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,203 ✭✭✭✭Basq

Technofear... the term bricking isn't really thrown around that often anymore!

As it's NEAR IMPOSSIBLE to brick the iPhone.. pretty much everything can be fixed with a restore of firmware.

I've found Cydia to be patchy software.. it doesn't handle a lack of disk space well, gives vague error messages and the repositories in which the applications are held tend to be down more often than not. But nothing you do in it could damage your phone enough to brick it.

In other news: Pwnage 2.0.2 has been released this morning - which will allow you to update to the 2.01 firmware, and contains the latest version of Cydia and Installer 4 beta.

    Details and links here!

I'm just awake and haven't really read how stable it is.. so gonna leave my updating til this evening til I get "da skinny" on it!

Thanks Basquille , I just had to restore to original 114 and then to 2.0 .

    All working now .

    Thanks again .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,203 ✭✭✭✭Basq

No worries lads.. glad to help.

Oh.. and from what I've read of Pwnage 2.02, it seems to be stable so g'wan ahead and do your updating to 2.0.1 if you wish. Process is exactly the same as the previous version of Pwnage.
