    i think when you are a massive die-hard fan of someone its very difficult to see past your love for them. I understand the buzz of seeing a hero regardless of the performance but this was rubbish.

    i was in the centre, half way back. The sound was about half as loud as it should have been. The man's voice is completely shot. His signature grumbling gravel now sounds like Cookie Monster on smack.

    Don't want to bring anyone's buzz down but i'm just amazed by all this positive reaction. I suppose if you love someone and shell out a heap to see them you can make your own fun.

    The venue looked brilliant from outside, the huge circus tent with fairy lights and balloons surrounded by food stands and picnic seats really suited the occasion. That said, the weather was lovely before the gig, so the atmosphere was relaxed... in the rain it would be a washout because there's no shelter.

    The security was definitely hit and miss... they checked my passport against my ticket, but didn't mention a credit card, and my sister walked straight in with just a glance at her ticket.

    Inside, we had great seats, aisle seats in the centre of block B. The view was great, but we were lucky! There was a large number of seats that shouldn't have been sold, including a number directly behind the supporting columns of the tent.

    The performances were fantastic, and Tom Waits was hugely impressive.
    The playlist was a little disappointing, I know he has a huge back catalogue, but as he hasn't played here for 21 years, I for one would have loved to have heard a few more of his older songs. That said, Hoist that Rag was a huge highlight, also the incredibly successful Make it Rain:).

    I would say the one true great disappointment was the crowd. Not all of them, obviously, but there were times that it was like being at the cinema with a class of 5-year-olds.

    You got to wonder how much people have to pay for their ticket before they'll stay in their seats???????
    The traffic in and out throughout the gig was truly astonishing... I thought at one stage a fire alarm had gone off. At least we were in the tiered seating so people could squeeze past, but you still had to stand and block the view of those behind.

    I agree about the sound quality, particularly in the first hour. The vocals were clearish, but the rest of the music was slightly muffled and indistinct.
    And at no point was it loud enough to drown out the incessant inane chatter from some of the audience. We were unlucky enough to be seated in front of two girls who seemed to think they were at a Joe Dolan concert! And despite leaving behind our (silent, flash-free) digital camera because of the no-cameras policy, the person direcly behind managed to spend the entire gig blinding us with her completely pointless flash!

    So, 10 out of 10 for the performance, 7 out of ten for the venue, and a disappointing 5 out of 10 for the crowd!

    All in all, still an unmissable occasion... but it would have been a better idea to do what did for Nick Cave... go see him abroad.... it would cost about the same, given the insane price of the tickets!

    Gig of the year, I envy the people going tonight and tomorrow night.

    To the complainers(:rolleyes:), it just goes to show you can't please everyone. Any talk of Waits being 'past his prime' is laughable:p. What I saw last night was a highly energised perfomer deliver a blistering 2 and a half hour set with a band that could turn on a dime.:D:D:D

    Mesmerising stuff.

    The complainers will be forever with us though, of that I have no doubt. I saw 3,000 people give a standing ovation last night.;)

    Security guy who checked my ID was instructed to check every second one, I think they realised the anti-touting measures (which I support 100% - who the 4k wants to buy a ticket on eBay from some mercenary gobsh1te at multiples of the face value? Get a grip) were working and there was no need to slow down the queue.

    Block D, row C, seats 35 & 36 - perfect view.:D:D

    I was on the outside edge of he tiered seating so had a perfect view of all the people coming and going. Amazing how many wandered in and out thru the show. In fairness to security they stopped peole coming back in during songs and only let them come back in when each song was over. I thought the sound was poor at the start but was quickly improved but maybe that depends on where you were sitting. There was an engineer wandering round with a mic continuously testing the sound in different sections.

    Anyone drive to the gig and park in the park last night? Was it delayed/mobbed or how was it? I'm 36 wks pregnant and don't want to end up walking for miles so I'm thinking of driving but don't want to be queuing for ages to get in & park either. Was traffic & parking fairly well managed?

    I know 2 separate parties who left 30 mins before the end.

    They were probably just fair-weather Waits fans - the type of people who only know Closing Time. Also, I've met a few johnny-come-lately fans that have bought tickets. Good luck to them I say - let them leave early and head off to their Damien Rice type gigs.

    I'm going tonight, and I can't wait. Block D near the front, hope that's a decent seat?

    Quite poetic. I'm not some sort of scurge :) i didn't heckle or anything - I thought the gig was really really shít.

    anyways, back to the love in - i need some serious booze.

    Traffic was fine getting in. I got from Templeogue to Phoenix Park in about 15 minutes and parked on the road, about 300 yards from the tent. Arrived at about 7.15.

    There was a woman at the concert with a new-born baby. I would not recommend that.

    Karlh - are you the only one who is capable of judging the performance objectively? I don't think so.

    Parking,no problem. Go reasonably early and you can get within a couple of hundred yards of the show. Drive in to the park until you reach the roundabout close to the concert. Its the one with the Farmleigh signpost right in the middle of the park. Traffic wise no problems getting in and out. I was home to east meath in about half an hour.

    We drove right up and parked right at the entrance. We were delayed with babysitter etc, so there was a bit of a panic and there were road works on the North circular. So maybe go early and drive right up to the tent and you should get parking on the grass verge. The Gardai were there and they didn't say a thing about it.

    Best of luck with the pregnancy! :)

    I 'wandered' out once during the show as nature called (darn those pints! :pac:)

    Did see a few dozen people outside taking smoke breaks which i thought weird, didn't stop to ask them tho as was hurrying to get back in!

    I've only been a casual fan for 8 years, but can see how the die-hard fans with their imitation hats n all became that way ;)

    The lad beside hadnt even heard of Tom Waits until a week before and was dragged there by his brother in law....... end of the night he was cheering louder than the die hard on my other side who went to prague and is going to both remaining shows.

    We drove out the Castleknock gates afterwards as most of the traffic seemed to be going towards the Parkgate Street exit.

    Have you actually listened to anything he's done post-Asylum (i.e. in the last 25 years)? If you have then you should have known exactly what to expect. If not, then why on earth did you go?

    Seems like some folks went on the strength of one song that they heard in 1985, or because of Jersey Girl, or Downtown Train, or because they thought it was a fashionable gig to go to.

    For anyone who's actually stayed in touch with what Tom's being doing, this concert did exactly what it said on the tin (some venue issues aside). Fantastic stuff. And I can go down into the cold cold ground happy that I've heard Tom Traubert's Blues live. :D

    Rightly annoyed now reading Flogens post, I'm Block A, Row Q, seats 1 and 2...the very edge!!! Gutted now!
    If there's any fair-weather Waits fans in better seats than me with flashy cameras I'll be well annoyed..

    Seconded. That was a very special moment indeed for me.

    Row Q is 17 rows back, I reckon you'll see the whole stage. It won't matter anyway. Well it didn't for me. The stage isn't high up and there is no barrier between him and the crowd. Afterwards he even leaned down and shook hands with anyone up front. You will enjoy it, the majority says so!

    Wow...I thought the sound was awesome except for one point where the sax wasn't loud enough during a solo but it was fixed after 10 seconds or so....really....the band were part of a mix...nothing was on top of the mix...it's very hard to acomplish that live...and I should know...I'm a sound engineer myself!

    Anyways....I dunno what gig Karl was at last night, but I just thought this show was nothing short of spectacular....only thing I'd change was perhaps a couple of tunes from the Asylum years as I'm one of those fans who loves his entire back catalogue and I feel he didn't play enough of the older stuff!

    BTW did anyone see the complete idiots who brought a newborn baby with them in a pram started bawling in the middle of the show - FFS they couldn't get a babysitter? I was amazed they let them in.

    Anyone manage to take note of the set list?

    From memory, and in no particular order:

    Lucinda; (didn't know the song but it appears to have been an opener elsewhere on the tour, subject to correction)
    Rain Dogs;
    Singapore;
    God's away on business;
    Cold, Cold Ground;
    Way Down in the hole;
    Dirt in the ground;
    Cemetery Polka;
    Metropolitan Glide;
    Piano set:
    Tom Trauberts Blues;
    On the Nickel;
    Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis;
    Innocent when you dream;

    Top of the hill;
    Circus / Table top joe;
    Bottom of the World;
    Get behind the mule;
    Hoist that rag;
    Make it rain;
    Encore:
    Jesus gonna be here;
    The Eyeball Kid (spectacular visual;));
    Time;

    There were more, and I've just realised he didn't play anything off Swordfishtrombones (my favourite).

    Anybody?

    Yeah, I mentioned them a page or so back. The baby was crying during the concert. Main concerns were for the baby, obviously, but I would not like to have been sitting beside them.

    Regardless of what he plays, I'd say your in for something special.

    Last night was already very special and by friday they will have got the few little sound problems of the venue well and truly sorted :) Plus it will be the closing show of his tour..... magic ;)

    You'll be at the show. As special as everyone else who's there.

    You may even get to see Tom force a monkey to smoke a cigarette*...

    *just a little something for last night's audience;)
