Here is a picture of him playing piano taken from my seat just so you get an idea of how bad the view actually was :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 49 numbersix99

mbroaders that view wasn't great, but you should have been able to see Tom whenever he wasn't at the piano (i.e. 19 out of the 25 or so songs). How was the sound back there?

I was there with my girlfriend wed night. Absolutely spellbinding. (shut your hole Karlh).

    A few complaints:

Seats too close together. Uncomfortable. Was it really 3,000 or did squeeze in a few 1,000 more?

No shuttle bus or taxis after gig in the torrential rain. Pathetic. Aikens are cheapskates-always cutting corners.

Tom Waits is a genius and his mission has always been to destroy his voice.

Maybe you can go to see Aled Jones at Xmas Karlh.

Ouch that view doesn't look too hot alright, my phone was out of battery so I didn't take any snaps (I never take photos at gigs anyway) but I remember being at Mark Knopfler in the point and we were literally in the worst seats, very back, very corner, it really ruins a gig.

Anyone reckon a revolving stage would be doable for these types of gigs? have the audience surrounding the whole circular stage which is in the middle of everyone and have it revolve slowly around so everyone gets an equally good view :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 49 numbersix99

Loop, I agree about buses- it was ridiculous not to arrange for a few specific buses considering there's be a few hundred people who would require it.

It must have been more than 3000. I estimate 2000 people in block A alone. I'd say 3500-4500.

Cornie, I think your revolving stage idea would result in a lot of artists vomiting on stage, and not just Slipknot.

And to be honest, the furthest away from Mark Knopfler you are the better ;-)

I could just about see him once he didnt move backwards at all. There is fairly thick cable that was running from the speakers down to the floor that was covering him up when he was standing too unfortunately.

The sound was ok, it was more akin to watching a gig rather than being at a gig if you know what i mean?

I'm going tonight but on the issue of people wandering around during the gig - I just can't fathom it.

It was the same at Leonard Cohen - people wandering off to get food and drink (the decision to leave the stalls open was stupid), go for a piss and have a smoke.

It's bad enough that people fill up on drink beforehand and then need to use the toilet but I really can't get why they feel the need to nip off for a smoke. I'm not a smoker myself and I understand that cravings can be tough to deal with but surely you have enough willpower to fight the urge for under 3 hours.

I'd normally not be bothered about it - it's their money to waste if they want to - but it's quite distracting to see people swarm around you constantly when you're trying to sit back and appreciate the show... it's particularly distracting when you have to stand up every few minutes to let them in and out.
The Smoke police are at it again, what would you like us to do next???

mbroaders the view I had was similiar. I sent a complaining email to Aitken but so far I have only recieved an acknowledgement.
There is nothing they could do to compensate me anyway, as I waited so long for Tom Waits to play here and the disappointment I still feel 4 days later hurts. Nothing could compensate for that, unless he does a leonard cohen and comes back later in the year, but I know thats not going to happen.
    :(

I went on Thursday... wish I went to the Friday one.... Lucky Day, Blue Valentine, Heart of Saturday Night, Goin Out West.... what a set list!

Did Tom do or say anything special considering it was his last gig of the tour?

He's playing the Point (or the O2 :)) on the 1st December - it's not on Ticketmaster yet but is on his website.

    *sigh*

I don't see how it's being part of the "smoke police" to wonder why people can't suppress their cravings for 2 and a half hours to see a show they paid over €100 for. It can be annoying seeing people wander around, sure, but I don't want it to be banned - just can't understand why it happens.

Last night's gig was amazing indeed - so many great songs and the ones I didn't recognise was just great to sit back and watch.

I'd list off what I thought were the highlights but it would be the majority of the set, which kind of defeats the purpose. Let's just say I wasn't expecting 'Heart of a Saturday Night' and 'Way Out West' and was blown away when he started them up.

Best gig. Ever. For ever and ever. Amen.

    Wow!
Excellent Gig, amazing performance. That was probably the best I've ever seen him.

I had very good seats and the sound was excellent but when I took a walk to the back the PA didn't really seem to fill the tent all that well. I can imagine that if you had the morons who need to talk during the gig close to you it would be a problem.

But hey... What a gig :D

I'm off to find a campfire and a can of beans.

People talking beside me, ah F--k it, I don't mind..
People constantly going in and out of the gig, ah F--k it, I don't mind..
Some weird guy who looked like a Right Said Fred reject on pills dancing like a fool in the isles, ah F--k it, I don't mind..
Not having a smoke for three hours, ah F--k it, I don't mind..

I got to see one of the best gigs of my life last night, so f--k it, I DON'T MIND

    Wow indeed !

Last nights performance was just amazing ( for me anyway ) I was sitting two tiers back from the sound desk slap bang in the middle so had a excellent view, set list was damn good also. All in all it was an amazing night and I'm still blown away by it this morning and probably will be for a long time to come when I think back on it. Will we get a live cd/dvd out of this tour ? .....I hope so.

Was it worth the 270 odd quid for two tickets ? Yes most definitely,in fact I should have went to all 3 nights...you could do a lot worse with your money :)

As for all the people walking in and out,as adam above said " ah F--k it, I don't mind " I enjoyed it and thats all that matters.

There is not really much more I can add to that except for ...thanks Tom ;)

Supposed to be playing new Point in December, I heard. I think if you Google it you might find mention of it. Although it will prob be an an unmentionable gig anyway.

If your sitting in tier D looking at the side of a speaker and listening to 2 fools talking incessantly you'll find outside having a cigarette improved the sound quality and had little impact on the view.

Not my seat thank god, I enjoyed the gig, they belonged to a friend of mine who when he saw Waites in the Olympia was stuck behind a pillar. He's just not destined to 'See' Tom Waites I suppose.

Legion, there's a download of one of the concerts of this tour. You can get it on:
    http://www.npr.org/rss/podcast/podcast_detail.php?siteId=15842121

It's worth getting just for the way he does Lie to Me!

Attached is my view from Thursday night

Really enjoyed the gig. Have no complaints. I waS in Block b Row F. I wouldn't I have minded a smaLL rise in volume. Loved the disco ball hat. Eyeball kid intro. I was secretly hoping for Martha on the solo set. But that's the way it goes.

He's a brilliant showman. It was very well done. A place that size could do with screens and I can see how people in the c + d blocks might get a crap view. A fair few of ther songs I didn't know but enjoyed. I think Thursdays set list would probably have suited me better. Not much audience chatter where I was. Some guy was on the phone to his mate and other people sitting near by told him in no uncertain terms to hang up. I asked people behind me to stop chatting and they did. that was it. I thought the audience were brilliant too and made the show.

The tent/stalls and all seemed well laid out. I got a nice cigarette tin from one.
I think Aiken could have put more effort into the organisatrion around the gig (buses, stewards and better communication. I bought my ticket blind and only afterwords could see the seating plan. There should have been a procedure in place for getting a ticket refund if you were unable to go for any legitimate reason.)

The price of the ticket was worth it. It was almost a 3 hour show. I loved it and would go again.
People drink. PEople smoke. People need to piss. FLogen, get off your high horse.

People drink. PEople smoke. People need to piss. FLogen, get off your high horse.

I didn't think a throw away comment like that would need to be explained so many times.

Yes people do all of those things - I just can't understand why they can't refrain from doing it for a mere 2-3 hours when they're after paying serious money to be in the presence of a legend.

As I said - it only creates a minor distraction for the rest of us so it's not the biggest of deals, not like I'm saying people should be strapped into their seats, I'm just trying to figure out the logic.

(All in all it's not as bad as the two people who turned up to their seats near me half way into the show - they must have been sick.)

I'd have to say i agree with Flogen here. Can't understand why people don't have a bit of patience or the ability to concentrate on something they've payed a fair chunk of money to be at, just for a couple of hours

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 49 numbersix99

I've no problem with those leaving for a drink or a ciggie, but why do people pay so much money to talk through the flippin music?!? As mentioned before the couple behind me for Tom Waits spend the entire thing talking, despite my nasty glares and eventually telling them to shut up. How selfish can you get???
