Some really strong imagery there though rhyming style seems very disjointed in places. Creative Writing is just down the hall on your right.

Because I am a life-long fan, don't tell me you don't think it's a blatant rip-off. I'm hoping the gig will be one of his more eclectic stage shows, rather than a show where he sits at the piano and tells stories in between songs. You never know what you'll get with Waits.

Has anyone see him play recently?

Heckle him on the Thursday night and I for one will insure you will be only be able to communicate using sign language;)

This will be my third Waits Gig, having seen him in Paris and London. You will be in the presence of greatness and there is no such thing as a bad Waits gig. Truely brilliant and well worth the money IMO. He will chill you to your bone marrow and raise your soul to heights a boatfull of oiled up, horned up female nubians could not reach. Remember this will probably be the only time you will hear him live in this country, he is doing this tour for the fans and I imagine he will not be making it an annual event, given the last gig was in 87' you should feel privilaged to see the legend himself. Arguably the best showman alive!

Id love to know what you all think of it.

The Troubadour of Gin Joint Sleaze
(For Tom Waits) By Frank Holt, Ballyknockan, Wicklow

Voice like rolling rubble, furled by bourbons imagery,
Mind like drunken windmill swirling wild and carelessly
Fishnet tights, bar stool nights, prelude to the welcome bed
Vowels n growls n metaphors, smoke rings in a fiery head

Troubadour of gin joint sleaze, poet of closing time thinking
Notions with wings, strummer of strings, piano that’s always been drinking
His best friends are brawlers, midnight crawlers, unleashed in the misty charade
Their eternal cocoon, the last chance saloon, stuck in the beer stained parade

His hobbies are hookers, dubious good lookers clinging to the last drop of wine
Small change boozers, dead end losers, searching for a blue valentine

Lover of the obscure, the slightly impure and the tasty whore dragged up from the sewer
Lover of Bars, Cadillac cars, Venus and Mars, Havana Cigars
Frequenter of slums with down trodden bums drenched in dark Jamaican Rums
Waitsman on a rampage, Waitsman on a roll, Waitsman touches my senses, Waitsman touches my soul

He writes of life’s complexities, red eyes stumbling down a cul de sac
Trembling hearts with passions pledged, mule variations on a one way track
In his world of vague obscurities I listen to the deafening roar
Of a voice entwined with poetry that pierces to the very core

Waits ill never know your mind
    You’ll always leave me guessing
Yet swimming through your tortured vowels
    Has been a painful blessing

I wonder if this Frank Holt lad is of the same bloodline as the great General Joseph Holt, Wicklow rebel leader in the 1798 insurgence.

Was obviously joking about the heckling blackie. "Chill you to your bone marrow and raise your soul to...." I'm reaching for a bucket here.

I had tried to get tickets for him for a gig abroad previously without any joy, so they could have charged alot more and I probably still would have paid up, so even though it's a rip I'm hardly going to ring Joe Duffy about it. My brother was at the '87 gig.

    Anyone get their tickets yet?

Did anybody see the announcement on Ticketbastard that they're going to auction some tickets to the TW gigs?

I found it amusing to see a few people selling their tickets saying either I'm not responsible if you don't get in or you shouldn't having any problem getting in as they probably won't be checking ID very closely.

See 3 posts up... nothing "ahole-ish" about it if it's for a good cause IMO.

I thought the TW gigs were ticketless ? You need to bring your credit card with you on the night...

As a matter of interest if someone is sick or cannot go for whatever, genuine reason what do they do with their ticket?

They can't even give them to someone else because the credit card holder must be present on entry

    That's the €1,000,000 question now isn't it?

It seems the only two options are:

Let the ticket go to waste.

Give or sell it to someone else and hope that the security isn't as strict as the announcements say or that the person who goes can sweet talk the security guards into letting him/her into the gig. The latter could easily work if you find someone who looks like you and is trustworthy enough to borrow ID from you and give it back after the gig.

Which, if any of them roads would be the safest to park on?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 49 numbersix99

Anyone have any ideas about getting to the venue by public transport?

I called Ticketmaster and Aiken and neither knew anything about special buses set up (like Arcade Fire last year). Which is a bit inconvenient to say the least. Do they think Tom Waits fans all have cars?

I've heard that the venue is near the visitor's centre, which is the far side of the park, near castleknock.

Anyone know which bus seems best? Seems to me the 37/39 are the best options, leaving from Hawkin's St (the little st beside the Screen Cinema across from Trinity) and getting off at Ashtown roundabout. But I've no idea about gates being opened or not.

The 37/39 bus seems best. I'm assuming all the gates will be open, given the fact that the show is on. They have to allow full access.
I think the reason for no special buses being arranged could be due to the fact that the Arcade Fire and Duran Duran shows in the park were in October and December respectively, when it was dark by the time doors were open, and they probably thought it would be safer - and definitely less congested - to encourage people to get there by bus.
They may have decided not to bother this time around because - as you say - they're assuming the bulk of Waits' fanbase will be driving, and it'll still be daylight by the time the show starts.

2025 Gigs and Events: Stuart Murdoch, Lyle Lovett, Stuart Murdoch, Wolf Alice, Camera Obscura, Rewind Festival, The Corrs/Imelda May/Natalie Imbruglia, Iron Maiden, Neil Young/Van Morrison, Lana Del Rey, Weezer, Sparks, The Doobie Brothers, Billie Eilish (x2), Oasis, Sharon Van Etten, The Human League/Blancmange, Deacon Blue/Turin Brakes, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings (x2), Nerina Pallot, Sleeper, Wolf Alice

Great thinking by Aiken and friends. What happens after the gig, when it's much darker (and raining, they say) with all the knackers hiding in the bushes waiting to pounce?

The map above is a bit inaccurate. The circus tent is closer to the Aras (Hope she's a fan!) and Chesterfield Ave. The map on ticketmaster is a bit closer to the mark.

Passed it last night as they were finishing it off - Wish I'd got tickets to the Edinburgh Playhouse instead! Some pictures from there on http://www.flickr.com/photos/el_morgo/sets/72157606422171451/

Much nicer venue then what looks like a big circus tent. Still - all the reviews are good so hopefully a good night to look forward to!

Parking - I'd say a good bet could be park on Blackhorse Avenue and go through one of the pedestrian gates there. Only a few minutes walk and should be able to skip the traffic jam getting out of the park after..

I'm staying on Parkgate Street and don't know the area. Will it be alright to walk from there to the tent without getting knifed and, if so, how long will it take?
