    Guys,
Would you think Harlem is a little too far to get an apartment if we want to go into times square at night, eat out around there etc.

    Cheers.

Bit late in booking the accom. for the end of September here and running out of ideas. Staying for 7 days and don't really want to go over 500 euro if possible.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,181 ✭✭✭LolaDub

500 euro for a week??? Think you've really underestimated how much you need to spend. Harlem isn't really far from Manhattan but you would need to be on a tube line and don't want to cause offense but harlem probably isn't the kind of area you'd want to stay in. How many people are chipping in on the 500 budget or is that a collective budget? Did you check craigslist or is that where you've found this apartment?

Found the apartment on nyhabitat. That's 500 euro or a thousand between two. There's plenty of decently reviewed places for that kind of money on trip advisor but there just all booked out :(

So Harlem is a bad area then...that's good to know...rules that out.

Right need help. Have to book the tickets by 12 tonight as the aer lingus sale is ending. All the budget places seem to be booked out.

The best I see to be able to do is the red roof inn in manhattan for 815 euro to share a room with someone else. I might stretch to that if it was a room for myself but with having to share a room for 815 I don't think so. Pure rip off.

    Anyone got any ideas?

How much would it cost to get in and out of town in taxis if you were about 6 miles or so out. I could get the subway in in the morning and then taxis at night I suppose.

If thats 815 for the room thats good value, if its 815 each to share a room then that sucks. Look at www.alpharooms.com for your dates i saw a studio for 500 euro for the week and a two star hotel at same price. There are reviews included too

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,181 ✭✭✭LolaDub

www.bedandcoffee.com was recommended to me but i have never stayed there. Rooms from $105 qa night with sharing a two bed room from $140 i think

www.colonialhouseinn.com is a hotel and an art gallery, rates from $130 i think but apparently have to share a bathroom

    Both booked out.

I think I may have been lucky though and got a place in Harlem that's in a decent neighbourhood. Trip advisor review is good.

What zoo would be the best the bronx or central park?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,181 ✭✭✭LolaDub

I meant if its 815 for the room in total or 815 each for the room for both of you, like 1630 for the room? The bronx zoo has a good reputation, supposed to be very big. Never been there myself.

Sorry yes....1630 for the room (815 each)

Rip off. It's only a travel lodge type place aswell.

Word of warning to anyone: If your looking for budget accom. book months in advance!

    Try this one.

New York is pretty expensive, its hard to get good accomodation that is well located ona budget price. If location is more important than quality some of the hostels are really good. If you end up off manhattan you'll spend a lot of your week travelling to and from manhattan. Entirely whats important to you.

Here is an apartment on craigslist with two bedrooms on the lower east side. http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/vac/758680634.html $150 a night for both rooms

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,931 ✭✭✭az2wp0sye65487

Yeah it was a shared room.

Was in Central Park Zoo last year... its not great. Dublin Zoo is bigger and has a better selection of animals. The poor polar bear in Central Park Zoo looked driven insane, he had a tiny enclosure.

Plan on heading for the Bronx Zoo next time I visit NY

    Hi,

I am aware that there is a New York Mega Thread so I am hoping that this one is not locked as I want this one to focus on one topic only.

If you have been to New York can you tell me what things you saw or did? Whether you liked them or hated them and the cost etc...

Please keep this thread to just the things you did and went to see..I don't want to have it locked before it even gets started. Thanks

Mega-thread is here for a reason. If everyone posted seperate threads we would have nothing but NY threads. Merged.

    You been to NY yourself?

Nope but I'm going soon and I can't wait. Tripadvisor has reviews of all the attractions and you can list them by popularity etc. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g28953-Activities-New_York.html

When are you going ya arm chancer? :D

The Red Roof is actually a really nice hotel!

I haven't been there, but the Bronx Xoo is supposed to be really good, I'd imagine it's a lot better than the one in Central Park.

Oh now I guess I need a 'question'... Is it true that you can no longer go inside the statue of liberty?? I hope it is not true.

Pinkmonkey: As per trip advisor you can if you make a booking in advance. You can't go right up to the top anymore though.

    From wikipedia:
Liberty Island closed on September 11, 2001; the island reopened in December, the monument reopened on August 3, 2004, but the statue has remained closed. The National Park Service claims that the statue is not shut because of a terrorist threat, but principally because of a long list of fire regulation contraventions, including inadequate evacuation procedures. The museum and ten-story pedestal are open for visitors but are only accessible if visitors have a "Monument Access Pass" which is a reservation that visitors must make in advance of their visit and pick up before boarding the ferry. There are a maximum of 3000 passes available each day (with a total of 15000 visitors to the island daily). The interior of the statue remains closed, although a glass ceiling in the pedestal allows for views of Eiffel's iron framework.

    No probs horse. ;)

I'd say it's nice alright. Them 3 star places are always clean, nicely designed and modern.

It's also right beside the empire state building.

1600 for the room is just really feckin' expensive.
Flights are booked anyway and accomadation is not sorted yet so may have to stay there.

It would be deadly to stay there like but expensive that's all.

Ok virgin going to New York, what should/shouldn't I see/do?

I want to do the touristy things obviously but what else is there for a 22 year old girl to do? There's so many mixed reviews about different things it's hard to know, different strokes for different folks I suppose! I just want to experience New York as much as I can in 2 weeks :) heading there next week :D

I did read. Nearly every single page!! I've come up with a shortlist:

City bus tour [to get our bearings]
Empire State [supposedly much more worth it at night time]
Statue of Liberty [last ferry is at 3.30pm]
Rockerfeller Center [marginally better than the Empire state, and well worth it during the day]
    Ground Zero
    Maddame Tussauds
Jersey Gardens as opposed to Woodbury
Possible to do the Sex and the City tour?

I'm a lost cause out on my own!!

Here's another suggestion. Go to Grimaldis then walk back over the Brooklyn Bridge. Here's a Map to show you where it is, check out the streetview which will let you see it. It's just behind the parked cars, tiny place really but really great. Also just along the street is the river-side which has really great views back over the river to the city and a fancy Ice Cream factory too!

Pizzas are great, inexpensive and the walk back is breathtaking. Just over a mile long. Perfect for working off the pizza! :)

    Enjoy your trip.

You could do the ferry around the island tour as well, its pretty cool plus they serve rather generous quantities of alcohol makes great fun!

What kind of stuff do you want to do? Just general tourist stuff? Could get a horse and trap around central park and a night walk around time square is a must!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 592 ✭✭✭BubbleWrap85

Thank you both for those suggestions. Yeah it's just general touristy things. I don't want to get bored of that either though. Ideally I'd like to go to a few interesting places outside of that as well. Afraid I'm not really into Art galleries and the likes [I wish I was that sophisticated!]

the 3 big art galleries are next to each other at central park, you should pop in while your there, impressive even if your not into art. the staten island ferry is free to take which brings you to staten island, just something extra to do.
