Is that €1000 for the two of you? If so that doesn't seem too bad. I've been pricing flights to New York for the last while and the only way they're going is up. With the rising price of oil prices may even go higher. Aer Lingus regularly have sales so maybe hold out until their next one, but I wouldn't wait till Christmas tbh. Check the prices a couple of days either side of when you're looking to go and you might save yourself a few euro.

Well it was more around €1100 with Aerlingus. It wouldn't be a bad price but the thing is I am paying for this for myself and another person as a surprise birthday present so I am trying to make it as cheap as possible cos I'm not exactly rolling in it:pac:.
Checked out those Delta ones and they do look good thanks Third_. I'm gonna hold my horses for another month or two anyway - build up the bank balance and then see what happens!.

And just another quick question - for the sake of another €100 or so would I be better to fly into JFK as opposed to Newark? Is the extra bit of travel from Newark worth it to save a few euro?

There's no real difference in average times from either airport to Manhatten. Newark compared to [url=http://www.nyctourist.com/travel_jfk.htm[/url]. If you're getting a taxi. JFK has a set feee while Newark is metered. With tolls and tip they work the same (roughly)

    Hey there,
I have flights booked for the middle of July, and I have been looking for cheap accomadtion for 6 people - i have found a good offer for an apartment in the East Village, but I am a first-timer at this, and I just have a couple of questions

    - i am dealing with this company http://www.cloudninerentals.com/ , they seem v. legit and helpful, and i would be more confident about using them than dealing with a single person - has anyone used them/ from looking at the site do you think its safe

    - as i am a first timer, i am not 100% sure on what questions to be asking - i have already asked about cleaning charges and deposits - what am i leaving out???

    thanks

Did you look at Continental? They fly into Newark too. I've flown into JFK and Newark and while I prefer JFK, if I could get cheaper flights into Newark I'd take them. I think Newark is a little bit further away, but it takes roughly the same time to get into Manhattan and the taxi is only a few dollars more.

BTW, I think Aer Lingus are increasing their fuel surcharge AGAIN, around €10 each way, so that would add another €40 onto your fare with them if you don't book before they increase it.

Just wondering if anyone thinks this is a good idea or has done it before - ive been looking at hotels in Long Island and Queens, both near the subway with a direct line to the city centre
they seem like nice hotels, with good reviews, and at the same price as some questionable hostels in manhattan - does anyone know how much a taxi would cost to long island from say, times square

also, would it be safe to take the subway at night, we are going in July and it will prob. be bright till late

    thanks

My Humble Opinion would be to forget about staying in one of the other boroughs should this be your first visit to New York and just find a clean and comfortable hotel in Manhattan.

I have no idea of taxi prices, sorry.

Long Island is a very big place ;-)

Subways to Queens, Brooklyn etc are generally safe enough. I've been in most boroughs of NY at night time and haven't had any trouble.

But... as the previous poster pointed out... Just stay in Manhattan. A lot easier if you are there on holidays, especially after a night out or something like that..

    Hi all

We are ending a two week US road trip in July by flying out of JFK. I have hotels booked up as far as two days before we fly out.

What I would like to do is spend the last two days/nights at a nice beach town but also be near enough to JFK to have an easy trip there on the final day.

Something laid back and quiet with a sandy beach suits us!

    Any advise?

    Coney Island !

The place where New Yorkers migrate to when the weather gets hot. Easy to reach from Manhatten on public transport and a taxi to the airpotr will set you back about $40.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 992 ✭✭✭kcb

Cheers for that. That's probably not a bad idea!

We'll still have the car so we can go further afield if there is somewhere better though.

thanks for the input, but the hotel we are looking at is 220m from a subway which has direct lines straight into times square,5th ave etc

it is less than 4km from times square, and all the reviews on the net say its an extremely convenient location, so i think we'll give it a try

2 days and nights in Coney Island would be overkill,IMO.

I lived close enough to there for a while in Sunnyside. It was only 15 mins to Times Square on the No.7 Subway line from Sunnyside, so it should only be about 10 mins from Long Island City/Queensboro Plaza stop.

Perfectly fine spot. Subways late at night are usually about 2 or 3 every hour so you might be waiting a while, but a taxi from Manhattan will only be about $15 - $20.

Heading back to NY for my second time, but this time with my 7yr old Daughter.
I will probably take her to Top of the Rock, toys r us and FAO Schwarz and places like that , but just wondering is there any other cool places for kids?
Also, High School Musical 3 will just have been released over there, and i know that she would be dying to see it..
So anybody know of any good cinemas there? And can i just buy a ticket on the night or will i have to buy it that day..?

There is a good cinema just off Times Square. Its on 42nd St between 7th and 8th Ave.

I think it's called Loews? There are a couple of cinemas on that street anyway.

For a new release, which will no doubt be as popular as that, you may want to pick up tickets a day or so before to get decent seats. You could get them on the day, but I would imagine there will be a lot of sold-out shows as its a popular spot.

Depending on where you're staying there's a couple of cinemas in or around Time Square. There's on in the Virgin Megastore, and another on 42nd street (opposit Madame Tussauds). I was in the latter one and both tickets that day. We went for a midnight show. Granted it was a few years ago but at the time they didn't have reserved seats so we had to fight (not literally) to get seats together.

The American Girl Place would probably be heaven for a 7 year old girl

Femmy: There's a couple of cinemas around Times Square, I was in the Loews one, nothing special, but I'm sure your daughter won't care once she gets to see HSM3, there's also the one downstairs in Virgin Megastore. We had no problem getting tickets, but the film we went to see wouldn't have been all that popular, so I'd try getting them a day or two in advance if I were you to avoid disappointment. Your daughter would probably enjoy Ripley's Believe it or Not too, just off Times Square.

AdrianII: Don't know anything about Macy's having a sale one day a week, but they regularly have special offers throughout the store, especially on public holidays. Bring your passport or driver's licence to the visitors centre for an 11% discount on most purchases.

Caked Karen: I didn't price Fossil watches so I don't know where the best place to buy would be, but there's a Fossil store on 5th Avenue, you should be able to find it here. Mac make up is available in Macy's too.

When you walk into the cinema you'll notice vending machine (cash/credit) to your left and right where you can reserve tickets in advance. Loews is a fine cinema and very close to Times Square.

Not sure sould this be in the New York megathread but anyway...

I have heard the queues at the Empire State Building are huge but are they so even if you got your tickets online?

It's pretty high up and you have the novelty of saying you were at the top of it but then again I have heard great things about The Rockefeller Centre too.

One of those great things being the fact that you get to see the Empire State Building from it of course haha! Also there are no queues and more room at the top in general.

Dunno....I'm only spending one night in NY and want to make the best choice...

And for anyone who has done it or either before, when is the best time to go up? I'm going with three friends, one who is working over in Boston for the summer and the other two are twin girls who'll be mad for shopping so we'll probably only get one bite at whichever cherry we go for!

Been to both, empire state building at night is the best view, but rockerfeller during the day. If that makes any sense. Definitely worth going to both imo. If you only have time for one, then I would go for the empire state building at night.
