I am looking to book flights to New york for the last week in October. Although I am based in cork i would consider flying from other airports.
I would be interested to see what your thoughts are on the best airline to use and the best place to book flights.

Last year i flew to New York via manchester with BA going and to shannon with aer lingus on my return.
BA flight was brilliant great plane and service, aer lingus was not the best, cramped seats for 6 or so hours.
Can anyone offer any reccomendations ?

    cheers....

I think you'll have to fly from Dublin or Shannon for a direct flight.

Recommendation would be to look through the Sticky for search-engines that will search through multiple carriers to get you the best price.

Are you looking for the best airline or a good price?

€656 Dublin -> NY end of Oct with Aer Lingus
Down to €535 if you travel mid-week.

But for the same money (€656) you can fly from Cork to London and then onto JFK with BA (which you liked before)...

Have you tried the prices with Aer Lingus for Cork-JFK via Dublin, apparently they are meant to be good value at the moment and a transfer through Dublin would be much more painless than transferring at Heathrow.
This is now possible as Aer Arann and Aer Lingus recently set up a full interline agreement, with Aer Arann on the Dublin-Cork route feeding traffic into the USA bound Aer Lingus flights. Its all for sale on the Aer Lingus site.

I flew from Cork to NY via Heathrow in July with American Airlines.

    They worked out the cheapest.

Also handy to avoid Shannon or Dublin when flying from Cork.

Ticketmaster in the US is fine! I book all my Broadway shows there when I go to NYC. As for the tickets they will only let you collect them at the venue if you're outside the US.

    thanks innocenteyesuk
so i could book them now with the credit card, then when i get there, head down to the venue on the night and collect them - or better to collect them a few days before?
just the hall doesnt seem to be the biggest thing you will ever watch a gig in but im sure they have the tickets there with your name and all on it

Thanks for that KCB, and what is the plane itself like ? Is it a fairly comfy flight or are you all packed in like sardines with nothing to do for 7 hours ...?

Probably best to collect them early on the day of the event. Picked up tickets at MSG for a Knicks game last year, which btw was a great event!

We went to Times Square last year. We bought tickets for TGI Fridays. They were very expensive, however they were worth it. If you go outside Times Square you have to stand in the freezing cold for hours to get a good spot. You can't go to the bathroom either and if you move you lose your space. You also can't drink. You are wedged in.

I was supposed to stay there, but due to Hurricane Katrina (long story), my stay in New York was extended and I had to use another hotel. However, I did go to the Roosevelt for a look and I have to say it looked great. Definitely nicer than the hotel I ended up in, from what I could see of the lobby etc, very elegant.

It's right beside the UN HQ, and when I was there it was crawling with Secret Service - I discovered that there was a big UN delegation staying in the hotel at the time, which probably means it's a decent place!

Nowhere's too far when you're in Midtown Manhattan, so the location is fine.

I stayed there - location's great, IMO, as you could walk everywhere. It's near enough Central Station.

A poster above pointed out the lobby - yes the lobby's lovely but alas it doesn't quite reflect the rooms. The rooms are a little shabby and old, but they're functional. I wouldn't recommend it as a room for a romantic get away or anything luxurious, but it'll suffice as a base from which to explore Manhattan.

    118 East 40th Street, NY 10016 Manhattan

Simple: there's only one in Manhattan -- number 10 on the list. Good walk, or short taxi ride.

Hi, hope someone can help me with a quick query.

I will be in upstate NY next month on business with the possibility of staying on for a couple of days when I hope to visit NY city. Having never been to NY before, can anyone recommend a decent, not too expensive hotel, Midtown, that is in a good location for shopping and sight-seeing?

Appreciate any help anyone can give to help me make the most of my 36 hours as a newbie in NY :)

Don't know what your budget is but I don't think there are many non-expensive hotels in NYC - it's just degrees of expense!! Especially in September.

The Wingate Inn (Wingate by Wyndham) is in midtown, the rooms are large by NYC standards, it's a new hotel and the pictures on the website are as you will find the hotel - it's very well positioned for shopping and sightseeing. It's around the corner from Macys, the subway is easy to negotiate to Ground Zero and Central Park etc. Have a look at the reviews on Trip Advisor.

I was in NYC last December, got an Eyewitness guide before I went. Very informative with detailed, easy to follow maps.

    hey all,

heading off in couple weeks for 10 nights - cant wait :)

just wondering about the details of city pass and passes like that - are they worth it or could you do your own thing?

and city tours - was thinking of getting one on the first or second day there to get a feel for the place - worth it?

can you just get them things anywhere easy enough?

    thanks

    CK

Parents are thinking of going to New York in December and bringing the little brother. I've no problem finding hotels for their dates when I search with two adults per room, but when I add in a child the number of rooms available practically halves and the price goes up by at least $100 per night. Does anyone know if there would be a problem if I just booked the room for 2 adults? The last time they went that's what they did (on the advice of the hotel) and were able to pay a fee of around $20 a night for an extra bed.

Most New York rooms are tiny by normal standards. Certainly none of the rooms I've stayed in could fit another bed in there.

Hi piglet lover try the ramada new yorker great location right acroos from madison square garden 1 block from macys, the hotel was only renovated this year. You get a room with 2 double beds kids under 17 stay free, for 4 nights it will set you back about 1500 dollars. Make sure you ask for a reovated room.
