Rockefeller. I proposed on the top of it. So it gets my approval :D

Why queue? I know of at least one large hairy member of the primate family who climbed all the way to top of the empire state building. The poor sod got machined gunned for his efforts but thats the risk you take.

Maybe some of those "parkour running" guys might try it.

Been to both, empire state building at night is the best view, but rockerfeller during the day

    Agree with this.

Yeah I'm going to try do both...Rockefeller in the day and Empire at night. Thanks lads and thanks to whoever loved it on here.

    Aw, how romantic :p

If you only have time for one, go to the Rockefeller Centre, so much better than the Empire State Building. You say you only have one night? Just do the Rockefeller Centre, there's way too much other stuff to see in New York.

I would recommend doing the opposite. The Rockefellar has lovely lighting at night.

im prob no help at all in terms of ur exact situation but when i was there, the one night herself let her hair down and i got a few pints in, we just went to the nearest bar and took it from there. in ny i felt it didnt matter where you started from but once u started talking to people it soon let you know where was a good place to end up (ie even if they worked in a joint, they had no prob telling you where was a good place to go)

as far as the rockafella vs the empire state is concerned - we did the empire state in the day, it was crowded, we got express tickets on the net, was badly organised how express ticket holders were just expected to walk tru the queues and u cud barely see anything with the guarding rails at the top. was glad to be heading back down the elevator to be honest (we got stuck for about 15 mins on the way up and it turned out we were the only people who spoke english so had to translate the emergency announcement, havent included that in my overall review, took it as it was). we had done the rock the night before and it was a leisurely stroll around the deck just after seeing the knicks in mad sq garden(so boring being a gaa man!) all clear glass guarding and fairly romantic with the view on offer. in other words if i went back, the rock wud be my only stop between the two.

Not going to NYC until early next year but looking forward to it already...:D

I've been there before and have been to Woodbury Common by bus. Anyone reckon its worth renting a car just for the day to travel to W.C. and back? I'm not talking about using it to get around Manhattan etc. Purely for the shopping trip.

    Any Pro's & Con's appreciated.

    Thanks.

we did and it worked out perfectly for us. car rental was across the street from hotel too. there's a review i wrote a few month back in a separate thread

I would highly recommend it, it adds a whole new dimension to the holiday and means that you're not confined to the bus timetable, it's also cheaper to rent a car than use the bus service if there is more than one person using the car, a further advantage is that you're not whacking everyone on the head dragging your purchases onto an overcrowded bus AND you can drop off your stuff in the boot of the car throughout the day rather than having to drag it around with you all day. The disadvantages ?, can't think of any other than if you're a nervous driver or a bit worried about driving on the right, if you pick a quiet time to drive out, say 10:00am and come back after rush hour, Manhattan is not that difficult to drive out of, the road to Woodbury Common is a doddle and the last time I went, I decided to drive up to Orange County to visit OCC (Orange County Choppers) on a whim, turned out to be the highlight of the holiday.

Deadly did you meet any of the buoys??
Was it just the store or were you able to go down to the garage aswell.

How long did it take to get there from the city?

I wish, nah you're only allowed browse around the store, the garage is by appointment only, so didn't get to see anyone famous, they were at Daytona bike week the day I was there anyway. It's not far from NYC, just stay on highway 87 north and it will practically lead you to their front door.

Again thanks to those who posted their opinion on the Rockefeller Centre and Empire State Building.

I have another two questions though sorry!!!

Is there a need to book tickets online for the Rockefeller Centre or is it leisurely enough that one can walk to the booth or whatever and buy there? I've bought tickets for the Empire State Building and plan going there at night because the queues will not be so long and if I buy tickets on the net for the Rockefeller Centre you must pick a time you'll be there at so I'm not so sure I want to buy online now for that one.

Is there shops and stuff in the Rockefeller Centre by the way and is there a time limit to your stay at the top?

Just walk up and buy the tickets when you want to go up. You might lucky with leaflet distributors outside the Rockerfeller too, handing out discounts for tickets to the top. There is no limit that I know of at the top, the longest I've stayed up there is about 30 minutes. (January = cold!) There are shops on the same block as the building, for example the FDNY shop which is very cool and worth a visit for the presentations alone. The ice rink in Winter is good fun too, I think in the summer its a seating area for the cafe at the bottom.

Enjoy, it's an excellent attraction, try to make it at twilight for a memorable experience.

It is, although they sometines have it as an "exhibition" space. NBC store is part of the same buiilding if you need essential "Office" souvenirs. 5th avenue (and particularly Saks) is opposit the rink along a shop lined alley

I stayed in Wolcott Hotel (booked via HostelWorld). It's a cheap enough budget hotel round the corner from the EMpire state and within walking or subway distance of most things. Only about 10/15 mins to Times Square walking (slowly .. in the snow)

Booked at the Hotel Newton and Travel Inn myself for my stay there in a weeks time....dunno what either are like but I think it was only about €35 per person per night for 4 people in a 4 bed room so check those out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,432 ✭✭✭✭rossie1977

there is a checked baggage place at penn station and that opens real early and closes at 9.45pm each night, last time i used it cost roughly $4 per bag

For anyone that went to see a show in NY, did you buy tickets before you went or did you get them at the TKTS booth/theatre? And if you waited until getting there did you have any trouble getting tickets for popular shows?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 76 ✭✭Mr Soft

I was there in December, and we got tickets to Les Miserables at the TCKTS booth in Times Square. They were for the evening show, about $50-60 each i think, which was not far off half price.

We queued for an hour or so, was absolutley freezing but it was December! as long as you are there around an hour beforehand you should be fine id say

how do you even begin to make plans on what you want to do

Trip Advisor is great for getting ideas on what to see, just search for Manhattan. Hopstop is a great site - you put in two addresses and it tells you how to get from one to the other either walking or using public transport. As you have so much time there doing a one day bus tour would be good to get your bearings. You can also check out the other boroughs on trip advisor to see if there's anything there you want to see. The transport network is pretty good.

Assuming you want to do all the sights - make a list of what you want to see. But stop short of making an itinerary up - the weather will dictate what you do to a degree. Don't know what time of year you're going but if you get a clear day do things like TOTR or Brooklyn Bridge - cloudier days/rainy days go shopping!

Top of the Rock and the Empire State Building are both great. I personally would do the ESB late at night as the queues aren't as bad and the city looks pretty cool at night. TOTR is a great contrast - one side is the concrete jungle that is Manhattan the other side looks out over Central Park and all looks calm. The queues aren't as bad and you'd need daylight to see the park.

If you get a good - but not too hot day - get a subway to Brooklyn - have a look around and have a pizza in Grimaldi's (apparently one of the best pizzas going) and walk over the Brooklyn Bridge.

Central Park is massive and deserves some time, you can do a tour of all the spots featured in movies - the boathouse, the fountains, the ice-rink etc.

As for restaurants, shows etc - there are so many to choose from - decide what style you want and check out what's available.

    Enjoy
