Woah that CAD miscarriage comic is really awful.
The mock-ups of that comic are horribly inappropriate and insensitive but ridiculous enough to make me laugh.

    /me goes to Hell

As much as I love Yahtzee, this was uncalled for.

Bashing CAD is too damn easy :D Nice to see someone high-profile-ish do it though.

To play Devils Advocate for a second - could it be said that Yahtzee has gone too far? Picking on large, money driven gaming companies who drop the ball is one thing, but is it a bit too crass & unprofessional to pick on what are often amateur enthusiasts doing these comics in their spare time? Sure CAD is poorly written but is it up to Yahtzee to say this?

Certainly a lot of it can be leveled at Penny Arcade as well though.

Have you ever seen photos of those guys? Certainly very far removed from their comic representations.

Yes one is bald and the other pig-like in appearance.

But i think the difference is that while Ethan, Tycho and Gabe all represent their real life counterparts in some way, CAD's Ethan seems to be some kind of fantasy version of Tim buckley. I mean dispite being a feckless gowlbag the character still seems to have everything gone right for him (the latest dramallama aside) i mean wasn't there an arc where he became head of a religion of gaming or something equally nausiating.
Tycho and Gabe on the other hand seems to be little more than puppets for voicing whatever snide remarks about gaming that Holkins and Krahulik have at that moment.

And if we're talking biggest gap between the comic version of someone and the reality of is, surely Fred Gallagher of Megatokyo is the winner here. By a country mile.

For reference, this is the comic:

Also, the characters of Penny Arcade are not meant to be author insertions, people just assume they are.

He could (and in a way, has) pick on CAD all day long on a cosmetic and artistic level but it might have something to do with Tim Buckley himself being a none too friendly individual.

While other 'successful' gaming web comics have developed their style and improved through practice and/or criticism (both constructive and destructive), Buckley hasn't improved at all, pretty much, from comic one (an exaggeration i know but it feels right). From what i've heard, suggestions and and criticism is met with stone walls and site-bannings on the CAD forums. A person so determined not to improve their work isn't making any friends, his personal record isn't sunshine and lollipops either.

I'm being nice, B^Uckley is an ass.

    /offtopic

Yahtzee may cross lines every now and then but he remains my favourite troll. As long as he doesn't make any serious deviations, he'll remain funny and interesting in my opinion.

I thought Yahtzee was spot on in his criticism. Whilst I've followed CTRL-ALT-DELETE for awhile, I've been quite tempted to quit as I haven't got a laugh out of the strip for a long time now. After the miscarriage strip though it's like a car-crash comic - you just can't stop staring at it.

More info on Tim's dickheadedness is available here:

Also Explosm took the mic out of that comic too:

Wow, he really is a nob

I was never into CAD, I got sent the odd strip related to WoW. Some made me chuckle, but 99% is cack. I spent an hour one day filing through the strips and I think Yahtzee got nail on the head here.

I don't think CAD will reply, from what I have read so far im guessing the author will just cry himself to sleep for the next week and then pretend it never happened.

I liked the music he threw in at the beginning and the end of each episode. It was usually appropriate :(

Very funny - he has a great sense of timing & how to run a joke - the playtoy / scifi show mashups were particularly good :D Though I think I'm one of the few net-residing Indy fans who actually like #4. *hides behind sofa*

It was a bit of a surprise to see his traditional start & end titles disappear, but I guess that's copyright for you!

Indy 4 was a fine addition to the series, anyone who says otherwise is a div.

Ohh yeah, ZP was quite funny too.

New one today: Alone in the Dark

[EDIT] Great review, unfortunately everything he says is completely true, Alone.. has some of the worst gameplay issues I've ever seen

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,606 ✭✭✭Slutmonkey57b

Has the music grown on me yet?

    No, sir.

    No it has not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,246 ✭✭✭✭Dyr

The music is like something offa WWF but otherwise: best review EVAR

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,199 ✭✭✭Shryke

The music has punch, I wouldn't put it down but it just isn't as good as the way it used to be. It's only a minor quibble though. And great review. I'll make sure never to ever play Alone in the Dark unless I'm bored or something.
