Well lads all quiet at the moment. Played a cupla games in Tullamore on Thurs morning (the day after the floods) and the place was beautiful. Greens lovely to putt on and obviously quite receptive.

Shocking weekend for Pitch and Putt, back at work this morning and I feel cheated!

The weather must have been steady enough in Cork going on the scratch cup scores that Dromcill posted? Great scoring in Hillview if the weather was anywhere near as bad as Dublin, although it did brighten up yesterday evening.

Ger, fair play on those scores in Glenville, a shame that the weather came in and more didnt get to take part in the Open out there but I think your scores would have been very tough to get near.

Thats 3 Scratch Cup victories for Ray in the last week (County Board Scratch Cup, Riverside and ESB). Best part of 1000e in prizes. Nice sideline when you are good enough !!!!!

€600 max for Ray in the last 3 wks alright as he told me he got €350 in total for Co Board and Riverside... Cork Scr Cups are not really the best in terms of prizes.. I would think the reason for this is that there are so Scr Cups over the year and they have to show an equal enough status otherwise they might loose entries etc.. It is a nice sideline though if you are lucky enough to be winning...

    €250 for Hillview yday, €150 for 2nd, €100 for 3rd, €80 for 4th, €60 for 5th & €50 for F18... Decent prizes there in fairness, all sponsored

Thats a great win for you there Tipper

Ya played well in fairness.. Was having a bad F18 as was only level thru 9 but managed to get 6 of the last 8 to win by 2 so was very pleased.. Pitching was very tricky but course was in great shape as usual..

Played Tullamore last Thursday evening.. Course in good condition... There were some very heavy showers and ball was very hard to control with spin etc and some were waterlogged for a period...It will be in very good shape in a months time but I hope the weather improves and hardens the place up a bit as it would make the competition more competitive then and better for viewing, thats my opinion anyway;)

Savage first round Ger, regardless of the conditions. Good spot on the course record too. I remember Andy Lowe did a 41 in O/C in a sweepstake to set a new record, but one of the holes changed a few months later to "remove" his record. He got it back soon enough with another 41 a few weeks later again.

Comfortable enough win for Ray in the end it seems, thats a nice run he's on too, with 3 championships coming up in the space of a month.

Pegasus , take a look at this site http://www.dublinboardpp.ie/ they have a list of all PPUI registered courses in Dublin.
Some clubs allow green fees, some only allow g.f's with club members, some not at all. Prices are usually reasonable, maybe €5/6 per day?

While it may be somewhat underhand of me, I'd advise anyone who can to get up and have a game in Saggart Pitch and Putt. Its a public course but with PPUI regulation distances. A belter of a course on the side of the hill.

Draupnir I too feel robbed of the weekend. I was due to play our open on Fri, and Sat then the scr cup on Sunday, but work and weather robbed me off all three. Serious lack of practice and competition for me at the mo, just glad I've Weds thurs and Fri off, will need it for the Leinsters.
It was a pity about our Scr cup as the weather was pretty decent from about 11 on.

so many messages to respond to! :pac:

Erry will be fine Gary, there istwo, maybe three greens, that will be very soft alright (17, 10 maybe 3/5) but there is good drainage there because of the hill. It is kept in good condition all year so it never is too far off championship quality but with all the rain I won't play there myself till Thurs or Fri.

I'm not sure what the story is with the Tullamore Scr cup, I know they want to have it before the Strokeplay and there was mention of the county matchplay weekends as an alternative date but nothing concrete. I'm sure it will be announced soon enough.

I think the quality of prizes has gone up dramatically in Pitch and Putt, and even if the total figure Ray has picked up is closer to the 600 than the 1k it still is a nice sum for an amateur sport.
here's the nub though, has the quality of scr cups increased or do people think that there are too many now?
It a genuine question, I haven't played one cup this year that wasn't for practice for a championship or a trial.

i heard the prizes were super in GCC the other week too.

Course was in decent condition alright, there is no need for the greens to be close to the bone yet, they will keep improving as the weeks tick down.
It was a good call on behalf of the Tullamore committee to cancel it yesterday, as any play could have ruined the course.
Agree with Tipperman though, we (Ireland that is!) could do with some dry weather, and I personally could do with some dry weather as I'll be killed with spin in Tullamore. for anyone who doesn't know the place, there aren't too many holes where you can compensate for spin.

Tipperman for a variety of reasons nothing happened yet, I was laid low all week and the day that I was ok to meet he'd a town council meeting. Its going to be a long slow arduous process I reckon, but hopefully it will get going somewhere.
I suppose I could just move to Tullamore! :D

And yes they were brutal yday, not that is has any bother on me, I'm happy to see them all bait each other into the backdoor and let the culling start there. A nice aug q/f against the Rossies will suit the Kingdom nicely, provided of course we see off that shower down by the Lee. ;)

Guys, I think that the Scratch cup era is coming to an end speaking from a Cork point of view. I have played in most of the scratch cups in Cork this year and for most clubs the entries have been between 60 and 100 (weather a big factor). These figures are well down on what used to play in these competitions. What with the prize money (vouchers rather than glass) required and the work involved in getting courses ready, I can see a lot of clubs in the future giving up on Scratch cups. The main reasons, I see the numbers playing in Cork Scratch cups falling are:
    • Too many scratch cups (one every week typically in Cork)
    • The same 5 or 6 players are winning each week so people are not going to spend 10 euro on a competition they have no chance of winning
    • Intermediate and Junior players are realistically only playing for one prize
The Douglas club recently had an innovative Nett Cup instead of a Scratch Cup. Here the top 16 Nett scores for 36 Holes qualified for an 18 hole playoff. This could be one way forward but then the top senior players would probably not play in this. So it is a tough situation to sort out.

Personally I enjoy playing in the scratch cups even though I have no chance of winning. 10 euro for two rounds on courses that are at their best is great value. Compare that to a round of golf or any other sport and that has to be value for money !!!!!

By the way, How many typically play in scratch cups in the Dublin area and other areas around the country

Dromcill, 120 would be considered good for a scratch cup. I personally think there are too many scr cups. yet there are courses I will (thats next yr!) go out of my way to play such as Royal Meath and Portmarnock that don't have any.

I think the whole concept of getting the course ready for a scratch cup to be wrong, primarily for the ordinary clubman. I mean why should a club/committee put so much effort into maintaining a course for guests essentially and then let the course degenerate for regular club competitions? Could never get my head round that.

How many scr cups are held in Cork per year.

Was watching the 18 hole playoff. Ray was playing with JJ so it was a treat so see two of the best players in the County/Country playing together. Conditions were very windy but that did not seem to hamper the two lads who were on nearly every green. Ray is a pitch and putt machine and a great competitor. Definitely hitting top form for the Strokeplay in Tullamore.
