Hey guys this will be my 4th time to NY,
HAs anyone stayed in the Regency Inn??
    http://www.regencyinnandsuitesny.com/

There's a reason they don't show you pictures of the street outside it.. Not a nice place! We walked by it and I had been looking at it for us, we were so glad we didn't stay after we saw it.

Heading to New York with a few mates in 2 weeks and looking to find out some info on a few decent nite clubs and bars worth visiting in the area.

Staying in mid town manhattan and any recommendations will be appreciated :)

Dunno about night clubs, but any of the bars you come across will be good. There one in the east village called Solas that we found that was cool. Also, I know it might not be everyones cup of tea, but there's a club call Angels and Kings on Avenue A and 11st that's open till around 4, has a whopper jukebox!

    Hey guys,
Hoping to head to NY in October with my daughter, but the flights are REALLY expensive!!
The best i could get (non-stop flights as travelling for a long time with a 7yr old might not be pleasant) is with aerlingus but for €1050!!!

I've tried delta, continential, AA, but all very expensive.

I wouldnt mind traveling to london and fly from there.

    Any suggestions guys???

Sorry to drag up the pensylvania thing again but its grand, no ques checking in,room was clean and tidy. Ok its not the standard you would be used to here, and its not exactly modern or has good views! but for a cheapo last minute deal or girly shopping trip it does the job. No Complaints.

Femmy was that per person or for the two of you.
Friends and i are paying around 500 euro per person return in June by flying to amsterdam then north west airlines to ny.

Cheapest direct flight i found was about about 500 euro per person in october with continental airlines. Did you check their site?

Yeah that was for the 2 of us, i was surprised it was so much as me and my boyfriend went over in Dec last year for only 700 for the 2 of us. maybe there was a sale on then or something.
i will try north west airlines and check continental again cheers.

is 2000 euro for three people in a double room in times square too much. By the way the hotel is called the paramount.

Depends on what time of year.

We went low season and got the room for $140/night at the Red Roof Inn. You can get rooms with two double beds for that price, but that's in January.

yeah there is two double beds and its actually for saturday. Its a late booking cause somehow i managed to book the worst hotel in america and had to cancel it.

the carter. A pure dump by all reviews but dirt cheap all the same.

Just a thought, have you looked into moving a little outside Central Manhattan, even Wast Brooklyn or Queens close to a Subway line, a little inconvenient maybe, but a half an hour subway ride to Central Manhattan might be unfinitely better than staying at the Carter, which is by all accounts the Hotel from Hell.

It sounds about right for a 5 star hotel in july.
    Remember thats over $3000.

A basic room in the new york hyatt for 3 people for 7 days in july is coming in at $3000 on their site just now.

If your hotel is not 5 star, then try the hyatt,it seems the cheapest of the high end hotels if you want to spend that kind of money

    http://www.grandnewyork.hyatt.com/hyatt/hotels/index.jsp

There are some lovely hotels too in manhattan for about a hundred dollars a night more than that one.

Definitely stay away from the disgracefully bad Carter hotel...
It may be cheap but flea bites and diarhoea are 2 things you don't want from a hotel judging from the reviews -~It was voted the worst hotel in north america on trip advisor.
I've walked past it and I could see why...

Jeepers,I only copped it was you that was quoted the €2000 for the carter...

For your €2000 , go and get yourself into the Hyatt as per the link and stay away from that other place.
You'd be better off burning the money and sleeping on the streets

Try the Sofitel - approx. €250 per night. Quality hotel, excellent location.

Handy Tip- If you need to use your credit card to purchase a Subway ticket from a machine you will be asked for a zip code. (they still dont use PINS for credit cards). So stick in the handiest 1 we all know- 90210
freaky thing is it actually works!!!!

Staying in New York in September for 4/5 nights.

Any recommendations on decent accommodation in New York?

Never been there before so somewhere relatively near the main attractions would be good.

Any advice/knowledge on this subject would be gratefully received...cheers

We are doing the same ourselves. I found this place, Doubletree Metropolitian in midtown. looks great, good prices through ebookers.ie, great location, reviews etc.

    Hi,
I am thinking of going to New York this year. I was thinking I might go in September firstly as the flights will be a little cheaper. 100 euro cheaper each way.

Will all the tourist attractions still be open in September and will the weather still be good?

I was hoping there might be somewhere we can visit outside the city also just to get a taste of the new york state countryside and culture. Would renting a car be the best way to get out to places outside the city.

Also would a rented car be useful inside the city or should we use public transport?

Rented car in Manhartten = A ruined holiday

Personally I'd say that you can travel to New York city several times before you'll evern need or feel the urge to rent a car and see New York State. So it depends on if it's your first time there or not.

If you only plan to spend 3-4 days there then you may not even ever end up taking public transport, you could just walk around though the metro and buses are just fine.

My personaly advise would be to forget the car and take the train to Coney Island to leave the big city and take the Staten Island ferry (for free) to see what the life is like outside of the city. But it really depends on if you have the time to do both.

The weather is fantastic in September.
A car would be useless in the city, and getting out of it in a car would be terrifying.
The New Jersey turnpike is monstrous.
If you must get out on public transport and then rent a car.

Heading to New York Friday morning and coming back on Tuesday night. Does anyone know anything special happening this weekend in New York eg festivals and the like? Also, this is my second time going, what would anyone recommend doing for a second visit that you don't get time to do on the first visit?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 58 ✭✭Rainman1

I would have a tendancy to disagree with the previous two posts, having rented a car and driven through Manhatten many times, I would say that it's an experience not to be missed, not for the faint hearted of course, but if you're an any way competent driver, then the stop/go nature of an automatic car coupled with the simple grid system of NYC makes driving a breeze. The hectic nature of driving through the city brings a whole new dimension to the trip and once you get outside the city, a couple in a car is a lot cheaper than a couple in a bus and you also have the freedom to go where you want, for example last february we drove out of the city on an aimless trip and on the spur of the moment I decided to drive up to Orange county to check out OCC (Orange County Choppers of discovery channel fame), turned out to be the best day of the trip.

    Hi guys

I'm new to boards, after lurking for a long while I decided to get on with it and register!:).

Anyway... I am thinking of going to NY in March of next year - hope to be there for Paddy's day. The flights are all around the €1000 mark at the mo.
I'm wondering should I book now or maybe save my money and wait till around xmas in the hope that there might be a bit of a sale on?. I know its a bit of a gamble when it comes to booking flights and its hard to know, but would appreciate your opinions anyway.
Its the fact that its Paddy's day that has me thinking the flights might shoot up if I leave it till xmas.

Am also thinking of staying in radio city apartments. Any opinions or can you recommend somewhere better for around the same price - price is €700 for two people for 5 nights! (very hard to beat!)

    Cheers

My mam n sister went to NYC for paddys, they booked there tickets around Xmass n they cost about €1000.

The prices go up n down so much its hard to know when to buy. I got tickets last year, 3 adults.. €1200 all in. Actually, for the 3 of us for 5 days it cost €1600. We stayed in a Hostel just off Time Square

Don't limit yourself to Aer Lingus and pick a mid-week to mid-week. Flying on weekends is always more expensive

I just checked the following dates on the continental website:

    Depart Dublin -> Newark

    Thursday 12th March 2009

    Return Newark -> Dublin

    Thursday 19th March 2009

    € 500 Return fare

It was also € 500 on the Delta website Dublin -> New York JFK

With the same dates on Aer Lingus it was actually only € 546.

Get booking if you want to :D

Is that €1000 for the two of you? If so that doesn't seem too bad. I've been pricing flights to New York for the last while and the only way they're going is up. With the rising price of oil prices may even go higher. Aer Lingus regularly have sales so maybe hold out until their next one, but I wouldn't wait till Christmas tbh. Check the prices a couple of days either side of when you're looking to go and you might save yourself a few euro.
