cdebru you seem to be telling every mac user to use pwned. My phone should arrive in the next few days and just want to know is there any advantage of using pwned right now over iliberty which I've been using to jailbreak and upgrade my ipod touch. Since I would only be doing the basics and not loading a custom firmware does it make a difference?

Right now the only reason I could see using pwned(from my understanding) is that you can load on a leaked 2.0 firmware onto the phone albeit buggy and not supported.

So is it iliberty or pwned? And I presume in iliberty you leave the baseband option unticked?

PWNED is better but it is a matter of choice PWNED does the activation and Jailbreak before the OS is on the phone so it is safer the current pwned is a little limited but there should be an ipwntools which would allow you to install more apps into your custom OS the other benefit of PWNed is that it allows you to run the current baseband on 4.6 bootloader so you don't have to fakeblank back to 3.9 to run the latest baseband or run an older baseband on the current bootloader

But iliberty+ is a good tool as well but if you have the choice I would go with the PWNED

Thanks that sounds interesting then. Whats the story with upgrading having used pwned? Do you not have to re-jailbreak then or does that only apply when you use custom firmware?

You have the customise the firmware you are upgrading to

PWNING just allows the phone to run unsigned firmware it does not actually unlock or jailbreak or activate the phone you do that in the firmware or with bootnueter. So if you put an official firmware on the phone without customising you will have a locked phone

    Hope that makes sense

hi cdebru you might know the answer to this question - If my iphone has 1.1.4 firmware already loaded on the phone when i get it next week do I still have to browse .ipsw and restore it to 1.1.4 to be able to then run iPwner?

    thanks in advance as always

No if it already has 1.1.4 you can go ahead and pwn it but you will need to download a copy of 1.1.4 or a 2beta to customise
personally I would not bother with 2 if you want a functional phone.

Lads just a couple of things to note/question:

    Next gen iphone

3G = twice as fast downloads (Guess that means people can use up their 1Gig limit faster)

Better camera = without the flash how can they really make it that much better (lens size vs pixles debate)

So I'm thinking why wait the 3 months or so before anything is out, (The German deal is ending the end of June, which is a guess that the new one will be out the 1st July!)

    So . . . . . .. . .

How do I get the iphone without contract from the carphone warehouse in de north?

    An 8gig one is €399 here and $399 (€250) there and a 16gig one is €499 here and $499 (€312).

    Big big difference

Rather than read back through 350! pages, I have a simple question. I have a legit Iphone with 02 contract, bought on launch day in Ireland with the 1.14 firmware. So far it is totally vanilla no changes made.

Is there any disadvantages/risks to unlocking it, and if so how do I go about unlocking it so I can go about downloading (and creating) 3rd party apps. What apps would people recommend ?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 9,688 Mod ✭✭✭✭stevenmu

Unlocking it just makes it sim-free, which is not much use to you if you're using your 02 sim anyway. What you are looking to do is "jailbreak" which allows you to run 3rd party apps.

iLiberty is one way of doing that, there's a tutorial for it at http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=849 which you could sort of follow, it includes steps for unlocking and activating which you don't need, so you would just tick to jailbreak and setup Installer, Installer is the app which will run on your iPhone and let you install other 3rd party apps.

The advantage is obviously running 3rd party apps, many of which are quite good. I don't think there is much risk at this stage, when it comes to updating to the next firmware version you'll just want to check the experiences of other people in the same situation.

No real risk you can undo the jailbreak by restoring to the current firmware version

Use iliberty+ or if you have access to a mac you could use pwned but it is probably a bit of over kill as you just need to jailbreak.

    Apps

First off install community sources then add BSD subsystem they will do nothing noticeable to your iphone but you need to do it just the same.

After that install appsupport 1.1.4 to fix the 353 contacts sms issue.

Then its up to you the NES emulator and games is fun, Wetool allows you to delete individual text messages or call logs or forward texts. Mxtube allows you to save youtube videos to the phone so you can view at anytime even without a data connection. Summerboard allows you to install themes the list goes on and on iphoneschool is a good site to find out about available third party apps

Just after restoring my phone to 1.1.4 as I was originally on 1.1.2. Then I went and built my custom firmware with Pwned, but now I can't restore my phone with the custom firmware as it is saying my sim card is not supported (its meteor).

How can I get the restore button to come up again so I can load on my new firmware?? I have tried putting it into DFU mode but when I keep my fingers on the home and sleep button for 10 secs it only leads the phone to turn off and back on!! I am now stuck with the itunes/cable screen!

Can someone please help! I know this is basic but i need any help i can get!

    Thanks in advance.

Ok the phone is looking for you to activate is that right and you can not get it into DFU or restore mode

Try unplugging the phone from PC hold the power button to turn off when it is off hold the home button and plug the usb back in keep holding the home button and you should start up in restore

If you cannot get that then the

Simplest way out is to download iliberty+ and just choose activate that will get you past the activation screen then you can restore to your custom firmware

Were you able to send a text with the sim in the other phone

Did you restore to 1.1.4 or did you update to 1.1.4

What app was it you were using

lastly did you restore to 1.1.4 then set the phone up as the a name you had stored in itunes so you got your call history sms etc if yes that might be your problem as if it is not the sim card then a fresh OS should have fixed it unless of course if you corrupted the file with data from your previous OS

Install community sources and you should see summerboard in the installer

I restored to 1.1.4 then used ILiberty+ to do everything else
when i logged into itunes it automatically new it as the name it was before i didnt do anything
how do I set up a fresh OS

when I restored to 1.1.4 it load cydia over installer and that doesnt have community sources...am trying to download installer from modmyiphone...will this do it??

When you connect it after doing the install it says set up as Stef or set up as a new phone you choose new phone you cannot do it now without restoring the phone with a fresh version of the OS

No installer will not do anything to fix it

BTW did you try and send an SMS with the other phone to rule out a sim card problem

It seems you just go in and ask for one and they give it tou you, you must give your address and pay by credit or debit card

The contract is signed up for using i tunes, so you do this at home, and as the phones are locked to o2 they expect everyone to do this

But you just unlock it and throw in your own sim

i.e. a credit check when you buy it!
