From my experience I think the written section of the AC is pretty difficult!

You need to be able to quickly, clearly and concisely get your thoughts onto paper in 25mins (I think!)

It took me by surprise first time I did it, I was only expecting role plays!!

IST is not too bad as long as you don't panic, just keep a clear head. It can be a bit daunting when you see the number of people doing the test, however you have to remember that 440 do get accepted, so you are in with just as good a chance!

I was just wondering do the PSNI wear baseball caps or regular caps like the GS?
Hi Rob, Some units wear baseball caps, such as the TSG. But i thing normal constables wear regular caps.

Recommended for some revision pre IST is How to Pass the Police Selection Test by Harry Tolley. Slightly over 8 quid on amazon delivered to your door, lots of practice tests

I have also just bought The Police Selection Process by Ian Hutchinson and also Management Level Pyschometric & Assessment tests by Andrea Shavick

These last 2 only arrived 2day so havent had more than a cursory glance thru them but they both seem to contain lots of useful info and more importantly practice tests.

I for one am not underestimating the IST and therefore think a few quid for a couple of books a worthwhile investment - for lots of us (ALL?!) this is our dream career so we have to go all out to pass it all and give ourselves best chances possible.

Good luck in your campaign :p

Hey thanks for that, I had seen that book on a post of yours a while back so made sure I ordered that one :). Totally agree with you, I've been in the private sector for a while now and it's taken me a long time to wake up and get out of something I'm not 100% happy in. So I'm all for spending a few pounds to give us the best possible chance!

Yeah first time applying mate, really wanted to apply last time for C13 but never really happened at the time so it's all full steam ahead for this campaign!

    hi boat 14:p

a word on the 1st exam u wil do, relax:cool: listen to numbers, a car colour is good to get but with a lic plate number u def find your car, if you all know what i mean. answer what you can and move on, give your self a set time per question, then more on, get your right answers in and if you got tim come bcak and answer them, and if you out of time:eek: and cant again relax:cool:, it happened to us all

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,012 ✭✭✭MrsGeneHunt

So from what I have gathered the first bit of the IST is someone reading out info that you have to take down then answer questions on the second part is number crunching and third part is the true/false/cant tell???

Phulease, someone take pity on us newbies..:p

Any amendments please let us know!

    1st part is car numberplates/colours/addresses.
    2nd part T/F/C'T
    3rd part numbers/data cross checking

    1) easy > 2) moderately easy > 3)tough

Well thats my take on it anyway.

    Hi all,

Great to see a forum tackling all the issues with applying for and joining the PSNI. I have applied for campaign 14 and IF successful with the full process I would like to know what the training times are once you complete the 4 weeks residential eg. is it 8-6,9-5? etc. I live local to Garnerville, have 2 young kids ,however my wife doesn't drive so I am concerned about getting them to school, daycare etc. Also is there any flexibility during the 20 weeks training for recruits who are parents, ie; getting home at night etc!! I understand that sacrifices will have to be made but I would be grateful if someone could let me know so I can get my head around the idea of giving the application process 100%.

    Cheers

    Hi everyone,

I am relatively new to this site, and still catching up on all of the pages from the beginning!

I have my IST this month too and really nervous.

How long does it take for that book to arrive from Amazon?

Hi Mandy Moo, I ordered mine on Tuesday with the free delivery and it should be waiting for me when I get home today, got an email about it last night, might be tomorrow at the latest with my postie!! You can pay a little extra and get it next day if you need to though.

I was wondering reading that comment there before I copped on. . I take it you meant you have your IST for April?
I have mine on the 13th of May which clashes with the same date I have an A-Level exam but luckily I can make both if I rush between centres.

AFAIK, all new recruits are residential for the first four weeks. I do know that a few years back the intakes were quite big and there was a lack of accomodation so those local to Hotel Garnerville got to go home. However from what I'm reading the classes now seem to be a lot smaller and therefore the likelihood of getting home will be slim to none. Personally I think I would prefer to live in and bond with everyone, you may end up stationed with some of them!! Looks like wifey will have to learn to drive or you will have to make alternative arrangements. Its only 4 weeks afterall and you'll be home at the weekends. :D

In very, very, VERY exceptional cases, they allow people to go home at night and return the following morning for the entire duration of the course - even during the first 4 weeks. It's totally at the discretion of the CI in charge of Foundation. Be warned though, if you don't have a very strong case to put to him, you've just appeared on his radar for the next 20 weeks.

hi psni, or anybody who's in the know...
just wonderin can you outline the training for the 20 weeks??
do you spend any time in stations or is it all in garnerville, also do all trainees go on to do the driving course at the end???
    thanks in advance...

Ah Ha found this on Northern Trust website.......

You get a NHS card when you register as a patient with a GP. You can find out your NHS number from this card. This card also contains other information such as your name, address, date of birth, and details of your registered practice or individual doctor. You can also get your NHS number by just asking your GP because your number is sure to be found in your medical records and notes.

If your medical card is more than eight years old then your NHS number is likely to have changed because the new ones have ten digits.

So u need to get ur new number;) ur friends medical card is out of date!!!! Its now called your health and care number

    http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/articles/article.aspx?articleId=897
Hi again!! I e-mailed an application for a replacement medical card on Tuesday, and received it in the post yesterday!! What service!! And you're right, it's a ten digit number, without any letters.

If anyone needs one and lives in Northern Ireland, go to http://www.centralservicesagency.com/display/need_a_replacement_medical_car and e-mail the application marked URGENT with a short explanation to medical@csa.n-i.nhs.uk

    Hey guys,

For anyone who's doing the IST soon, I found this website for a bit of extra practice for your arithmetic,

    http://www.thatquiz.org/

I don't know about you but my number solving skills have slowed up somewhat over the last couple of years!
