is there any back road around carlow that can let me avoid the town?!

I was chatting to an engineer on the road yesterday evening and he told me that they now have a 12 week plan which they are being told to follow so that the road will be open on time. So based on above post the March 23rd deadline sounds about right.

In regards the ways to get around the town there are a few but that depends on where you are coming from and where you are going and at what times.

One month on... that only leaves about 6 weeks now. Any idea on whether it's still on target for that date? The NRA website still says late 2008.

there are loads but unless you specify your direction of travel and destination I'll be here all night typing the various options. Plus once the bypass is sorted going through the town should be a breeze at any time.

so it looks as though we're on target for an opening before easter

    edit:
just passed Powerstown this morning and it doesn't look near finished, however I am pleased to report that Blue Motorway signs are installed, so it looks like this road will open with a 120Km/h limit

    Hi

Does anybody know if the Kilcullen to Carlow Bypass Scheme has started construction?

I was driving up yesterday and i'm nearly sure i saw some fairly heavy construction works happening where the Athy link road will be going (the entire route appears fenced off and ready for action)

I havent heard anything from the NRA etc regarding the start of it though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,216 ✭✭✭cargo

Any word around Carlow yet as to when it'll open?

i rang the NRA the other day

They said that they were hopeful for the 'start of May' for the opening of the Carlow Bypass!

I was driving up to dublin the other day and notice, trees been cut and a fence been marked off at the end of the 80kph stretch towards dublin, looks like it's at least being marked out

Carlow section is just about ready to go. But only as far as Castle dermot. You'll still end up stuck there.

Hi Passed by today at the kilkenny end. Looks like they are getting ready to put up lights and signage. Cant see it been open this week as they keep saying the summer. ANyway I was wondering why they are putting up the blue motorway signs I thought it wouldnt be motorway speads until all of the M9 opens in 2 years? Anyone know?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,172 ✭✭✭Don1

Motorway signs until they get to the ends, like the existing M7, after the last junction for the people who can't use it get off, it goes blue.

no official date yet, but judging by the new markings before castle d today yield signs and markings coming off the bypass, id give it 2/3 weeks max

they seemed to be resurfacing the on ramps in castledermot yesterday.

Am i right in saying that this phase of the road runs from the dump on the Kilkenny road to the carlow side of Castledermot?

If so... I won't get to use it...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,216 ✭✭✭cargo

Exactly, starts at Powerstown dump, bypasses Carlow to the East through Tinryland area with an intersection with the N80 before rejoining the N9 just South of Castledermot (oh the jams!!).

Have a look at the map on the NRA site and you'll see it in detail. (file size ~ 600kb)

ah man that sucks.... why couldn't they continue this phase to bypass Castledermot.
I don't think coming home will be bad, but the morning traffic going throw Castledermot is gonna be horrific!!!

yeh they have them resurfaced a little while , so that end is ready to go

use the back road around castled its quicker

will it though? It could be the case that there whouldn't be any more cars using that stretch of road until the waterford part is opened, give or take.
It just means that the traffic currently travelling north through Carlow will still be going through castledermot in the same numbers.
so traffic in Carlow drops, and in CDermot stays roughly the same

Traffic will stay the same but its gonna be a bottle neck. 2 lane motorway into a 1 land road. Thats never good. plus.... coming from carlow we'll have to yield to the ring. ie: all the motorway traffic.

They did resurface them but yesterday and today they looked like dirt roads.... maybe they're just dirty??
I sometimes use the back road coming home. I'm not convinced that its quicker yet..

I heard the soil banks washed away with heavy rain that is causing the delays

yeh coming home this morning one looked very dirty alright.

the back road is not as quick coming down because getting out at the junction is hard, but it'll be grand once the bypass opens, as traffic wont be going onto that bit of road where you have to pull out as much.

Its done I take it from Dublin to Carlow and the next stretch is underway? I ask cause I saw it on my way to Dublin yesterday and I could see big sections complete in Carlow and other sections all a dirt track as it is like down in Waterford?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,602 ✭✭✭ShayK1

that would make too much sense!!!

Its done from the dump on the kilkenny road to Castledermot. The Next phase will be from castledermot to kilcullen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,172 ✭✭✭Don1

Wonder when they'll bypass Fenagh and speed up my commute. 25mins is a joke....... :D

Where else is done? Anywhere up by Dublin?

Is Castledermot the place where there is a big roundabout that splits of into two (closed) roads which merge onto the new road? If coming from Dublin just as you get to Carlow there was a big roundabout and signs up for the new road, and you could see one stretch done (towards Waterford) and the other stretch (towards Dublin) not done. If you travel further down towards Waterford you get a great view of the road and it looks good before you eventually loose sight. Then you get down past Carlow and you see the work is on the bridges/over head.

Sully, the whole thing is being done in four sections. North to south, they are:
    1. End of the current M9 at Kilcullen to the start of the Carlow bypass just after Castledermot (remember we're travelling Dublin-Waterford here). This bit has just started if I'm not wrong.
    2. The Carlow bypass - nearly finished as we're discussing.
    3. From the other end of the Carlow bypass, a new section has just started which will pass near Paulstown, south of Kilkenny, crossing the N10 (KK-Waterford) at Danesfort (you can see the fences and compound now), and then finishing at Knocktopher in KK.
    4. The last bit is due to be finished in Spring 2009 according to the big sign and picks up where we finished in Knocktopher and runs all the way to Waterford. Those big pillars at Knockmoylan (the twisty bit before the railway bridge as you approach Mullinavat) are part of this one. You can see the works near Knocktopher if you head into the village on the main road from KK and then turn right at the bottom of the main street (passing the petrol station and hotel on your right).

I think the last little bit in the Waterford area is being done under the N25 contract (Kilmeaden to Slieverue via the new bridge), but it will all tie together anyway, as far as I know.

No, castledermot is the last village you come through before you get to carlow. The roundabout you're talking about sounds like the one at the Carlow Business Park or whatever that place is called out there. Castledermot is about 4 miles BEFORE that (coming from dublin), about 2 miles after the Moone High Cross Inn??

The place I am on about is before the Fire Service (coming from Dublin). The place has changed so much its confusing to know where the hell I am. I was half asleep so I cant recall place names. I just remember getting to the roundabout and the roads to the right and left were I assume the bypass which looked completed on the Waterford side but nowhere near completion on the Dublin side. There were signs for Waterford etc. and I could have sworn I saw M1 on the new road from the distance viewing (the sign was facing as if you were driving to Dublin).
