i dont think so, AFAIK you have to pay the 1st month of the contract up front and sign it in store, not sure how it works ordering online though, might be worth checking that out

Checked online & you have to sign up too!!! That sucks!!! There has to be some way around it.... You can buy it without signing a contract in the States & even if you just go up to Newry! Why not here???

Just checked the apple ireland website itself & they've added an iphone tab! But you cant buy direct from apple it just links to either O2 or carphone warehouse sites both of which make you sign a contract! Hmmmmm

hey so just got my 16gb iphone today from o2. Just wondering which is the best program to just jailbreak it? Was reading through some of this thread but most people were looking for it to be unlocked but i dont need that and i dont want to mess up the phone. It is 1.1.4 firmware on it.

if you run a mac, i'd use independence to jailbreak.

not sure about windows, but i've heard that ziphone should be avoided for the moment.

have a quick scan back a few pages in this thread. you should find all the info you need.

i think you can use ziphone 2.5 and just click the jailbreak button, i think that puts on the installer too

Using windows. Ill have a read through the pages.

Iplus2 is mac compatible it is all the one file so you just get the one version

www.hackthatphone.com have a tutorial and and links to download it

If you restore to 1.1.4 the phone will be locked and unactivated (brick is a different thing)

You could also use Independence it is longer and a little more complicated in that you have to get the installer yourself it will not downgrade your bootloader

Again www.hackthatphone.com has a tutorial and links

if you use a stealthsim you are 4.6BL
cdebru, how can I confirm I am on 4.6 apart from you telling me, not that I doubt you, is my firmware version not also the baseband?

Not sure about this mate but as you have a contacrt with O2 and all that maybe when you jailbreak it you lose your warranty, I would be careful! U defo lose your warranty with Apple when its been unlocked, unless of course u can restore it to its virgin state before sneding it back.....

Stiofain, can you talk us through the purchase process, what you need, what you sign, etc did you change networks, how long does it take for an 087 numbe to transfer to o2, etc etc, can you avail of the free texts for life offer on iphone?

    Denisor,
I was already a bill pay customer with o2 so it was much easier for me. I prebooked mine a week ago and just paid the extra 400 today. Didnt have to bring anything in with me.

Some of the people around me this morning were changing over from different networks but i didnt hear how long it takes. They also need a passport and i think 2 proof of address. Also bank details to pay by direct debit. Apologies that i cant really help you but as i said it was very simple for me.
Dont know about that free texts for life thing. I use basquilles free web text program anyway so im pretty happy with that.

Quick question about the i-phone for a "friend" !!!:o

If the phone is jailbroken can you still put music/songs onto it as I believe you can't use I-tunes ?

yes you can. you can still use itunes, just don't update the iphone software (either by clicking update or restore when your phone is plugged in).

Will take a few hours, I was told this morning it would take maybe 2 hours.
My details were put in just after 9 and I lost coverage from meteor straight away. As I am at work I havent activated my iPhone yet but just rang my number to see what happens and I get a message saying the o2 customer has not got their voicemail set up.
I take it you are now without service from either Vodafone or O2 at the moment:(
Did you have any problems activating the phone through iTunes?

Wow i'm shocked its taking so long! I changed over from meteor last week... they said it would take approx 2 hrs but received a text within 30mins from o2 saying it was done! No in saying that i was switching from Meteor PAYG to O2 PAYG not bill.... Hope it kicks in soon!

Doesn't take very long if you are switching networks. If you were bill pay on another network you will need your last bill and some for of picture ID.
They will also ask the usual questions when entering your details, how long have you been at your present address, occupation, how long you have been in your current job etc
For me most of it was done the day I put the deposit down so was only about 10 minutes and that was with me asking lots of questions about roaming and how to turn off data roaming.
Turns out it is off by default and you have to turn it on .

Lads I've a friend over in the states who could buy me an iphone, what do they have to do to buy one without the contract? Or could I buy one online and get it sent to their address?

    Nice one

    ftp://ftp.iphonefix.de/../iLiberty/

download the iliberty 1.1.2_15 then extract it and install

you select your firmware version and tick jailbreak then you can also choose to put the installer on and the open ssh bsd and the terminal

iliberty updates when a new version is available

It does not unlock at the moment but you dont need that anyway

There is a long complicated way or you could use swingkings way

Add the source to your installer : http://www.trejan.com/irepo

    Install BBInfo under Utility category

The 4.6 refers to the bootloader ( actually its the baseband bootloader but I leave the baseband bit out cause it confuses people)

Baseband is the modem firmware if you are using a stealthsim then you are on 04.02.13G

The bootloader is like the bios for the modem it runs before the modem firmware and turns everything on basically

Ok I'm on 1.1.1(out of the box) and am still debating whether to upgrade to 1.1.4
I have a couple of questions; iTunes has already downloaded 1.1.4 firmware for me but I haven't told it to install on the phone yet. Does this mean that when I click restore it will restore to the 1.1.4 or do I have to manually tell it to(using shift key) in case it only restores back to 1.1.1?
Since (I presume) I'm on the 3.9 bootloader that doesn't need to be downgraded is it safe for me to use ziphone? How long does the restore process take? When using ziphone after restoring do I have to close itunes?

just shift and restore then direct it to the 1.1.4 if itunes downloaded it it should be in the itunes resources folder as far as i can remember

Best to use iplus2 if you read up on it you will see the way ziphone works with ram disks is a little riskier no point in taking risks you dont have to

Alternatively you could use iliberty to jailbreak and activate put installer ssh etc on then just use the 1.1.4 unlock in the installer
