Hah, found this one from the early 90's. I can't find a link to the ad right now but there are snapshots here. Kept asking me for a username and password. Will look for the ad in the morning. :)

Id love to see more of the old Irish ads from the 80s on Youtube. I guess its just up to whoever may have the ads lying about on VHS to upload them!! Stuff like Bob Geldof with his 'Phonewreckers are idiots' Dulux Weathershield, the Guinness surfing ad and for some reason I can remember 2 really creepy ads from Schweppes and Trocáire!! :(

Everytime I see that Aer Lingus I want to cry! Thank God I never had to emigrate. Aer Lingus had anothr one in the 70s or 80s with a song in in that went like "Look to the sky... and then something about Ireland's oceans and we were born to fly. I'll have to root to find it.

ESB had another on with that guy Alan from TV3 I think who was a returned immigrant and there was his mammy making the dinner and putting on his electric blanket! Sob sob!!

Love the Guinness one with the snow in Dublin and the gorgeous music in it.

My daughter was making a birthday card yesterday for a boy in her class. On the front in big writing was 'A happy birthday to Toby'.
It instantly brought back the ad for topic bars, which I was very sadly able to quote verbatim to her. She was not amused.
Damn those ad writers, they certainly ingrained their catchphrases into our brains. That must be 15-20 years ago and I can still remember it. I cant hardly remember my own name some days.
It featured a creature called toby who chomped awway the bar bit by bit to reveal the catchphrase 'a hazelnut in every bite' (not a reference to squirrel poo tho') whilst trying to guess what it is as he
    goes.

    A happy birthday to Toby?
A hazelnut in the hand is worth two in the bush?
A hazelnut in time saves nine?
No, You'll just have to finish the whole bar
A hazelnut in every bite, Ah now I remember
Yes, funny how you always remember right at the end.

    .

I remember one that went something like...."look up it's aer lingus..." ...then some thing about winging or flying away each day....

Was that the one with some song about driving home on it, and the house was the only one visible all lit up for ages around it? Thats the ad I thought of when I saw this thread, but I can't find it...

That's the ad that features Dusty Springfield singing Going Back.

Meanwhile back at the ranch, do any of you recall a strange ad for Seiko watches from the mid 80's that featured a man and a woman strapped into some strange looking chairs which at the time I took to be electric chairs. I don't know much beyond that but it frightened the S-H-One-T out of me back then.

I've trawled the web looking for the ESB ad-yes it's the Dusty Springfield song alright. The only Aer Lingus ad I can find is the one from the 90s I think with the music from The Mission-Gabriel's Oboe.

That ad had some lifespan, I remember seeing it up to about 1999 or so. There was also a version with an Irish slogan at the end, this was shown on TnaG quite frequently in 1996/97.

There was another ESB one with "Only You" by The Platters as the soundtrack, a father is woken up at night by his young baby and he has to get up and heat up a bottle for the child. I think they were both aired around the same time and I've had no luck tracing either of them.

I'd also love to find "if you're gonna have a cuppa have a Club."

    You're welcome. :)

It was from 1994, the news which preceded the weather forecast I got this from had a 1994 copyright date. TÉ changed to eircom in 1998.

    Remember that one too

Why did the ESB need to advertise when they were a monopoly and everyone with a TV clearly had electricity?
