Yo! Turk, do you know where this flyer originated ??? , as in who did it ???.

I'm putting my hand out to be slapped here, but somebody has got to say it..... - I'm tired (as are many folk I spoke to about this subject) of this un-inspiring 'Drag and Drop' style graphic, the whole look and feel to the flyers the past 12 months has absolutley fook all got to do with the scene from years ago, yet - a record player and the Asylum pentagram, (seen in the background on this energize flyer)... PLUS the words 'OLD SKOOL' seems to be as far as the 'Designer / Artist' can counger up.

Using a certain style of graphic to 'BRAND' a company / theme / night, is standard in this game, but 9 out'a 10 flyers that I have seen over the past year look like a half hours work on the designers end. (And all the flyers look like they come from the same shop... what's with that?)

Who's to blame ? - The designer, using same ol' same ol' graphic software, or is it a promoter not having the balls to 'direct' the designer, - or is it simply that I'm just an akward fussy fooker. :( (Personally I opt for the last one)

My sleeve is rolled up - My Hand is out-stretched and I'm ready for a backlash of some kind from the possee here,... Yikes...

PS - B4 you lot go all Nuclear on me - take a deep breath and count to 10... ;)

END NOTE - Yo! JayC - take a peek at this,.... do you know this chap ? >> www.davesgaff.com

The flyer was generated by a designer in England, the same designer that does all the energize and reactive flyers so there is a specific style to his designs. As with most things design is subject to fashion this style of designing merging vectors images, pictures and silhouetes is most definitely in vogue at the moment. Funnily enough I like his design style in the sense that although the images are very cluttered he gets it to blend well. I take your point that they are not very oldskool but then again most oldskool flyers looked the way they did because it was to difficult to achieve what can be achieved now with out paying out huge money.

True the designs say **** all about what they are advertsing except maybe the image of the deck but they are visually eye catching and there for serve there purpose in attracting attention to the nights.

Thanks for the reply stephen, (and for not flying off the handle ;)
IMO - constructive banter keeps raising the bar and pushing the envelope in all sorts of areas. I am in no way dissin' the creative field / designers or promotors - I'm simply asking questions that have been put to me for a while now.

As a Digital Media Production artist myself, I know it is very very easy to fall into a rut using a specific skill-set and a range of software to get the point accross. I just think that the style of the flyers in question is akin to 'sweet wrappers / bubble-gum' and in no way give a hint to the 'Vibe' of the event. I find the Reactive and Energize flyers are waaaay to similar.

The whole flyer thing (past and present) is in itself a sub-culture. They are the 'spark' that gets people talking about a gig and ultimatley get 100's of like minded folk in a particular place at the same time. So I have always believed that it's a priority to keep them fresh and one step ahead of what is actually in vogue. However in some cases it is essential to revert back to the simple cheesy bland stuff from years ago to fire off a distant memory.

I agree that the style the designer uses *was* in vogue, but thats just down to the software that he (and other) design houses use. The same style has been seen on a multitude of adverts on TV for the past couple of years.
Having said all that, fair play to you and the rest of the lads that put the old-skool events together. - Respect.

Can we post up how to upload tunes to radidshare etc.

I have tapes of stuff from back in the day, but don't know how to do it.

It's been a long time since I've seen anything creative on the flyer front. Alot comes down to cash, if you want someone decent, you have to pay for it, and alot of events were and are run on tight budgets.

Used to really like all the Elevator stuff that Niall Sweeny used to do back in the day for the Ormond gigs. He also did alot of stuff for the George (ahem). He works in London now as part of Pony as as far as I can remember he was heavily involved in alot of the promotion side.

I'm a designer myself and to be honest most of the ****e out there now is one step up from clipart, there's just no ideas behind anything anymore.

record them onto your computer, then use a program to convert to mp3(windows media player does it)

    then upload using either

Can we post up how to upload tunes to radidshare etc.

I have tapes of stuff from back in the day, but don't know how to do it.

I use a pre amp connected to my turntable. This lifts the sound level.
I then connect the pre amp to my soundcard in my pc.
The software I use is Audiograbber you can download it from http://www.audiograbber.com-us.net/.You also need a copy of the Lame 3.97 audio Codec (the exe not the dll).
Go to settings, then to mp3 settings.
Click on MP3 file via intermediate wav file.
    Tick external Encoder box.
Browse External MP3 program name and find the Lame.exe
Prededefined arguments Lame 128 Kbits/Joint Stereo.
In arguments paste in the next line
    -V2 --vbr-new %s %d
    File extension mp3.
Tick Encoder is capable of using stdin box.
Launch encoder as Audiograbber currently is.
For CDs you should now just be able to click refresh and grab on the main menu,it will rip the track and then encode it with the Lame Codec.
For Vinyl and tape use the line in sampling under File.
If you then go to http://www.guerillasoft.co.uk/encspot/ and download encspot.
Click on the folder that holds the track then right click the track you want to check.
Second down is Lame header, click on this.
If all is well you should get
    == LAME 3.97 ==
    Quality: 77
    Version String: LAME3.97
    Tag Revision: 0
    VBR Method: vbr-mtrh
    Lowpass Filter: 18600
    ATH Type: 4
    Minimum Bitrate: 32
    Noise Shaping: 1
    Unwise Settings: no.
I hope this is of some use to any of you,its not the only way to do it by any means but its how ive been shown and figured out.
The audio still needs to be cleaned up using Sound Forge or the like!
At some stage ill write this out again properly and take some screen shots, this was just on the fly.

Nothing to fly off the handle about it's not my design :D
I arrange the printing and although I'm a designer I have
nothing to do with the design for reactive or energize.

I think the problem is that when you pay someone to design
a flyer who has no idea about the music or the scene you
will always end up with a generic design and it's not something
that would be easily briefed to a designer.

In the end of the day, design is like any other art form subjective.
