I am running 1.1.1 myself dont see any need to update to 1.1.2 really would see a need from1.0.2 though alot of programs wont run on 1.0.2.

Hi Dan, I could do with your help. Im just back from USA where I bought a new Apple iphone firmware 04.02.13_G (1.1.2 installed). I am on vodafone network and am looking to know how do I go about getting it to WORK! I've had it for a week now and can't do anything with it. I've googled how to unlock your iphone but there's conflicting replies - some say you CAN'T unlock 1.1.2 version? Can you tell me what to do to get me up and running.

    Appreciate it
    :)

You have two choices. Wait for unlock, its being worked on and maybe released soon. Or there are various Hardware methods out there basicly a small sim card type chip that you put into your iphone with your current Simcard and off you go. There are few Hardware methods.. Turbo Sim, Stealth Sim,And as you have a us phone a iphonesimfreer sim and few other ones but these would be the main.

Did you jailbreak the phone yet thats what you need to do first

If it is a US phone the cheapest way to get it working at the moment is Iphonesimfreer.com
Other than that wait for a free software unlock.

Handyman, some of those websites are confusing. Where it says "it cannot be unlocked" when referring to newer phones, it really means it cannot be unlocked BY SOFTWARE. It can still be done via the hardware methods mentioned above.

I ordered a sim from iphonesimfreer.com on Wednesday morning and it arrived this morning by Fedex. (all the way from Shanghai).

I'll post over the weekend on how it works (on vodafone)

Got my iPhone completing working with the Stealth Sim.

Just one question ... Is there anyway downloads to get the ringtone to be louder ?!! The ring tone is far too low ... driving me nuts.

    Thanks

I presume you are talking about the date but then why would it show Cingular as the cell provider. Anyone operator releasing a phone wouldn't be the naive!

Not talking about the date at all actually its not much of a clue but there is one.

I installed an application called Audioamp. I'm not sure if it makes ring tones louner as I'm still waiting on my stealth sim to be able to use it as a phone. I installed it using installer and it was under "Tweaks 1.1.2" but that category doesnt seem to be listed anymore. I couldn't find it either under "All Packages".

Hey folks, do ye know if I need to set up EDGE? Every so often when I'm on the internet (wifi) I'll get an error saying that I'm not subscribed to EDGE and it won't work. Should I just disable it?

What is it exactly? :o In layman's language!

    Cheers

Also, bluetooth is useless it seems! All it can be used for is the headset? Any plans to make it work for sending files, etc?

    ps.

Got a cool app called 'Simplify'... You download the program on your PC or Mac, and choose folders to share. Then log in on your iPhone and you can play them all over the wifi :) Dunno if you need to be on the same connection...... or if I could just play them from anywhere.

Used the iphonesimfreer last night, took about two minutes to snip the corner off the old voda sim card. It's a tight fit getting the sim holder plus voda sim plus iphonesimfreer card into the iphone.

Within about 10 seconds or so, the vodafone network came up on the iphone and it works perfectly.

Too many icons on the screen now, going to see if I can get rid of a few of them.

will the latest 1.1.2 bootloader eventually be hacked or have i basically bought a iphone/brick?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,878 ✭✭✭whyulittle

Sounds like a stupid question I know, but what have people cut the corner off their sim with? I can't imagine a scissors working, stanley blade??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

wire snips i'd imagine would be good, but use a pencil to mark out the lines.

it's unknown as to whether or not the 1.1.2 will be software unlockable we just have to play the waiting game. you haven't bought a brick as you can hardware unlock using stealthsim/turbosim or similar.

Who knows all you can do is wait and see

If you don't want to wait buy a sim solution and the phone will work its up to yourself

You don't need to set up edge unless you want to use it its the data connection like WAP

My wishful thinking and/or conspiracy theory:

Since Dev Team already have leaked 1.1.3 maybe they've cracked 1.1.2, but they've also been able to crack 1.1.3.....

Steve Jobs makes his Macworld speech on Tuesday and 1.1.3 is released on iTunes and the boxes ship. Dev team releases the crack for 1.1.2 & 1.1.3 at the same time thereby stopping Apple from closing the loophole before shipping.

    Would be fun.

Got the corner off with a good stanley blade, nice sharp edges.

Phone is now unlocked! Yay! :D

No need to delete the icons, there is a program called categories that allows you to create folders and put the icons into them. Very hand for organsing all those icons.

Ordered one of those iphonesimfreers over a week ago. Never came so I proceeded to get in touch with them yesterday. After attempted skyping, landlineing emails etc I managed to kind of get a response on their live chat support. Anyhow I don't know what the situation is there but they have sent me a refund quite promptly. Weird though like, if they didn't send the item over a week ago, how do they know it's not going to arrive Monday morning?

Anyhow, I said to meself where am I going to get one of these from now, and like, I want it now! So headed into town (Dublin) and got one from one of those phone unlock places in Parnell St for €60 and all is working good on Vodafone!
Jeez I could have done that 2 weeks ago!

PS - what is not suggested anywhere else really, is that the guy in the shop said to scrape away at the back my own sim card to reduce the thickness. It seems like a good idea cos some of the videos show people struggling a bit to get the tray down when both sims are in there.

Edit for cdebru - yeah 1.1.2 OTB USA phone

I picked up a new iphone in Newyork last week
followed one of the guides here and managed to activate and jailbreak it.

So thats the good news.. i can use safari google maps and even set up an email account on it.. but the problem is IM WITH 3 MOBILE
so my questions are as follows:

    1) will i always be doomed with 3 mobile as they use 3G?

    2) if i have to switch should i switch to 02 or Vodaphone or meteor?
    - my thinking behind this is that if the iphone is coming to Ireland, probably rolled out with a deal with 02, would it be better to have an 02 sim card to avail of any features that might be only available with 02 (such as the texting or voicemail preview) or would it be worse to have an 02 sim as they might have a way of blocking iphones that weren't purchased directly with o2 ireland??

    3) If i wait for a software solution will i be able to use 3 mobile sim then?

3a) If i dont wait for a software solution and use a hardware solution, which one would you recommend?

    4) How do I ensure that i dont accidentally update to 1.1.3 and lock myself out.. is this a setting in iTunes or will it promt me if i need to update...

    5) Can i use the same iphone and sync on my home imac and my work imac?

Many thanks for all the info you have already provided namely powerhousedan, ive learned a lot so far but still a bit of a noob.

i went into a shop in tallaght today and they were looking for 100 quid upfront and had to "send off" the phone to apple to be unlocked. any opinions on this? will it be sim free or is this just to dodgy?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

whiteshadow, in my little time of reading this thread i've learned that...

    1. unlocked iphones won't work on 3.

    2. unlocked us/uk iphones will not be able to avail of network specific features when/if the iphone comes here. the only feature of interest is visual voicemail.

    3. no.

3a. they all pretty much do the same thing (stealthsim/turbosim) get anyone from the fastest delivery.

    4. AFAIK just don't hit that big update button in itunes.

    5. yes.

    beanodog, that sounds very suspicious.

    A) Send a picture message (without e-mailing)

    B) Take a video & send in a message

on the iPhone? And please tell me it is possible.

    Thanks.
