Two of my co-workers on the force responded to a man on a corner who had apparently plucked out his own eye. My buddies actually looked around on the ground for the eye but when the EMT's arrived it seems the eye "popped", so to speak, and lay deflated, but ruined, in the socket. The guy was obviously mental and claimed he did it "because it offended him". Being the sensitive guys we are we made jokes (not to his face) about it for weeks. One of the best was: "You won't do THAT again....well,.....maybe once!"
