If we're going to 'make an example of em' why not just hang them?

    You're dead right...hang them all.

Ah I see the PC Police are out in force again today *sigh*

This country is so afraid of being seen as racist that scum like the two in the OP's link have no fear of being caught as the most they'll get it a slap on the wrist. Giving them 3 weeks to make their own way out of the country??? These two should have been detained pending the next available flight back to where they came from, and their assets seized by the CAB. The same applies to any foreign national involved in any other illegal activity, or even caught driving without insurance/tax/VRT for example.

And before the PC crowd get too high up on their horses, I'm sure you'd be the first to complain about Irish scumbags. To me there's no distinction - a policy of zero tolerance is what's required at this stage. The Irish are great at the bleeding heart save the world routine while our own citizens sleep in doorways and many families struggle to make ends meet but as I've said here several times before, charity begins at home.

(Side note: they can skim the details with a hand-held reader eh? So much for Chip and Pin )

ATM Scammers plunder thousands of euro from regular joe soaps bank accounts, putting a lot of people in the shoite in the process I have no doubt :(

And, they get 21 days to leave the country, nice one  Surely a custodial sentance would have been given if you walked into a bank and robbed and 27K? Same thing ! In fact I think ATM scamming is actually worse as it hurts the ordinary punter and not just the bank, banks wouldnt blink an eye at 27k going walkies.

21 days to leave the country OR 3 years in prison.
    Makes sense to me.

Uhm.. actually, they should do this with all foreign nationals that commit crime in our country. I would rather have them gone with no prospect of coming back, than being put in jail for a few months only to do the same thing again once released

IMO they should have been deported immediately.
21 days for them to collect up their bits and pieces, gather the rest of the money they scammed and move to another part of the city.
Bring them out to the docks and kick the ****ers into the Irish sea, make your own way home.

I don't know I can see why people would want them locked up for a while but that's only going to cost us more money best off to strip them of all there possessions and send them home broke.

I thought from the title the ATM machine had scammed the Romanians. :o

I hope they were DNA profiled and finger printed before leaving custody, at least in some small way we might be able to get a handle on them if (when) they re-enter our shore's again.

Couldn't agree more. Scum. I feel sorry for their daughter though who I assumed has just started school, now to be uprooted because of her parents.

Great system. How many crimes would be committed on a daily basis if punters thought they would be asked to do porridge OR leave the country! FFS !

EDIT: Sorry Mod's didnt see the other thread before I posted this so feel free to lock etc.

The sentencing in this country is so inconsistant.

Irish scumbag beats up Chinese guy in Crumlin - Gets 5 years.

Erithean scumbag rapes Irish woman in Dublin - Offered free flight home or 7 years in Irish prison.

WTF is up with our legal system.

and make criminals afraid - for once - to commit crime....

nice in theory, fails in practice

The link between harsher sentencing and reduction in crime because all the criminals are too scared to pull a job, is weak at best

For example, California introduced harsher sentencing for drug related offences. They experienced a 25-fold increase in sentencing to jail of drug offenders and lead the US in number of drug offender incarceration, 2.5 higher than the national average.

    And what happened?

California's crime rate dropped at the same level as the national average. And the counties with the harshest sentencing had violent crime rates go up.

So as I said, the idea that harshness works as a deterrent might sound good in people's heads (increase harshness, criminals too scared to commit crime, crime rate plummets .. obvious), but it doesn't tend to work out in real life.

For crimes like that they should be kept in the country and punished.

I would assume that they came here seeking asylum. Sending them back to where they came from is fairly bad punishment in my eyes. You lock them up over here, they'll be out in 3 years and scamming people again. Deport them, hopefully they'll never get back into the country.

Theres no such thing as asylum for Romanians since the EU Accession, so all they have to do is arrive in on a flight, if they want to work they apply for a permit. If they dont get it then they have to support themselves, they arent eligible for social farewell payments.

Saw two of these scumbags yesterday driving through Mullingar, one was washing windows and around the corner his buddy was annoying people begging at the traffic lights. I was pissed I didn't have my mobile with me, would've called the guards in 2 seconds.

    Yeah thats the lunatic.

"She noted he had been granted refugee status in August 2005 and had asked Mekonnen's legal team to discuss with him if he had any interest in returning to Eritrea considering he was facing the possibility of spending seven years in an Irish prison and his family might be unable to visit him here."

America had the same belief and deported many small time criminals. This lead to the many criminals being hardened in criminal institutes. A once minor dope dealing group eventually became one of the most dangerous gang in the US who now have world wide organisation. I saw a program about it a while ago. I think the gang have some numbers in their names. Simply to survive the gang just became more and more violent to survive.

In effect it doesn't work and actually may lead to a worse problem.

The same way the death sentence seems like the ultimate deterrent but there are lots of studies that suggest it can make matters worse. Firstly somebody on the run who is pretty sure he will get the death sentence will not care if he kills more people and then secondly you have to house them before death.

I'm not a bleeding heart libreal but if something is ineffective you should not use it. Practically everything points to the possibility of being caught is the best deterrent and stiffer sentences mean nothing without it. People break the law because they think they will get away with it

Looks like they are doing this, even in rape cases,

"She noted he had been granted refugee status in August 2005 and had asked Mekonnen's legal team to discuss with him if he had any interest in returning to Eritrea considering he was facing the possibility of spending seven years in an Irish prison and his family might be unable to visit him here."

So, we get rid of these clowns or foot the bill for these guys for the next 3 years?
Deporting people is not a normal option for dealing with crime, but I think it's a just punishment.
It isn't an option to all criminals, but shows a bit of ingenuity by the judge.

    Amen.
Unfortuntely alot of Romanians seems to be more than happy to live up to the stereotype of being theiving gypsies, its these ones we want out. If youre not a help to the economy, youre a hindrance, and therefore unwelcome. We have enough theives of our own without importing more from ****ing romania.

TBH, they should have been detained for 21 days while preparations were made to deport them while seizing any assets they may have to recover the money they stole.

So, wait, they were allowed to keep what they have from the money they stole?
