I was playing around with different apps for the phone over the weekend. I installed iCustomiser and stupidly selected to hide both iCustomiser and AppInstaller. So now I've no access from the GUI for either of these apps.
I went to the appInstaller site but you can't run the app from there, has to be run from the phone.

Is there any way to unhide either of these apps?

Is this true? and if so would there be a point in getting an iphone from the states?

    No it is not true

The latest firmware is 1.12 and it is possible to update to it if you do it correctly and even if you do it by mistake it is possible to recover.

If you have an unlocked iphone only a fool would update until you see what the dev team etc are saying about it.

So unless stuff magazine knows what is in the next Apple firmware version I would say they are talking out of their arse

Cheers BrookieD, found that thread you mentioned. Few ideas there, so I'm sure I'll get one of them to work!

I just picked up an iPhone at the weekend and have had an xda for the last 2 years. Very little experience with the iPhone yet but they are very different devices. The touchsreen of the xda is nowhere near as good as the iPhone but you have the stylus which helps out. I haven't used HTC's new touchflo so that may solve that problem.

The 2 devices sync nicely with Outlook & play media fine, but the iPhone has a much better interface. The xda is more for business, supports push mail from exchange, you can edit word and excel docs, has a better selection of applications and supports GPS. The iPhone is excellent at playing media and I am very impressed with their browser, you can view full pages, but most embedded media files can't be played. Most decent sites out there have a pda version and these work great on the xda.

It depends on what you want from your phone, if you want a phone/media type device I would go with the iPhone, but if you want a personal organiser type device I would go with the xda.

Orbit it is then. I still play my media on a hi-fi system and my movies on a large screen TV.

I purchase all my xda apps from Handango, excellent site and will give you an idea of what apps are available for windows mobile.

Okay, nobody answered any of my questions really and I kinda need to know soon. So, if people can answer this one it'll be great.

Like I said previously, my dad would like an iPhone for christmas. My sister lives in London and would be able to pick one up for him. If she was to do that, I'm presuming there'd be some sort of problem with sim cards and networks. Is there anything we can do to overcome this and make the phone useable in Ireland?

    Any responses would be great.

AFAIK it can be unlocked fine to be used on all networks - this has been mentioned in the thread.

How are everyone's edge speeds? I moved from vodafone to o2 for the better edge network, now I can finally connect but speeds are terribly slow, worse that dial up. This is in the south east, may fare better in dublin.

My EDGE is pretty fast. Takes about 20seconds to load boards.ie. On Meteor in Limerick and South Tipp.

No it is not possible to unlock a UK iPhone at the moment.
All that can be done is to activate it, then it will work with any O2 UK simcard, but not O2 Ireland.
You could also buy a TurboSim from www.bladox.com (for about €80) and use that, then you could use your Irish sim card. This procedure is a little messy and involves cutting your simcard. However it does work, i did it last week.

That's strange all right Mark. I was in the UK last week and had no problems at all when roaming. fyi I'm also on Vodafone.

    Hi guys,
Think I now know why I was having issues with my iPhone in the UK. I was chatting to a mate and he reckons it was cause my caller ID sending was turned off. He works for a crowd that send people to the UK all the time and any of them that had their caller ID turned off were able to receive texts and calls but not make any? I will be back in UK in a few weeks so will test it there again this time with my caller ID set to sending.

    Cheers,
    Mark

    Thanks a million.

If he does buy this turbosim thing and use it. When o2 get the clarification they need in Feb or whenever, is it possible to use an irish sim card then so he can use it properly?

I bought an Iphone from 'unlockthatiphone' at the weekend and I've heard nothing from them. I wrote several emails and phoned them but can not get anyone to respond to me.
The site says they'll respond to emails in one hour but I've not got any response! It's quite worrying.
Has anyone else had trouble with them?
I'll keep you posted on my progress!

    Hi guys,

I got an iPhone in the Apple store on 5th Avenue, New York, on Saturday (1st December) and it was a week 41 model with version 1.1.1. In case anybody is unsure about buying one from america, they still have the old phones. I just picked my one at random and it was perfect.

Doing the www.unlockthatiphone.com thing now, I just want to know, do they change your imei?

Wow, you're really lucky to get a week 41 model. I know someone who bought an iphone from that same store 2/3 weeks ago and got a week43 1.1.1
I think at&t stores may have older stock(wouldn't sell as many?) than some of the bigger apple ones so maybe people should try there.

The 4th and 5th digits in the serial number are the week numbers. So it should go like 7V741SR... and that is week 41.

It only took 15 minutes to unlock as well, just make sure you have wifi access.
