I know someone who's parents are going to NY from tomorrow for a week. Does anyone know if the new 1.1.2 firmware is already on iphones in the stores in america? They want to buy one and unlock it but 1.1.2 hasn't been hacked yet so i'm a bit apprehensive to recommend them to buy one. Also, i know you need a credit card to buy one from the apple store but do the staff realise that it's an irish credit card and do they then refuse to let you buy it?

i thought 1.1.2 is only a european firmware. if so they will be getting 1.1.1

A friend bought one for me on Monday at an Apple store in the states. I don't have it yet so don't know what firmware is on it, but I'll post back when I get it on Friday. The staff weren't too happy selling to a non US citizen, but didn't actually go as far as refusing to take their credit card.

Dunno if anyone was watching Ireland AM this morning but that fella from www.backfromthefuture.ie was on and he was showing off the iPhone. I have to say my jaw hit the floor when he mentioned the price, a WHOPPING €699, can u believe that!! There was not mention of it being unlocked, I assume it is at the ludicrous price. Also, he failed to mentioned anything about future firmware updates relocking it.

I laughed to myself after the whole thing was over, I shudder to think of all the poor fools that will go into their shop after seeing that and slap down 700 cold ones for the iPhone when it can be bought for less than €300 in the states....good old RIP off Ireland!

€699 is a ridiculous price to pay fpr the phone.
1.1.2 can now also be unlocked but you will not be able t upgrade further when new firmware comes out without unlocking again

    well lads
    hows the apple iphone going
    im a nokia n95 user
if i was going to sell my n95 would i be upgrading or downgrading to a iphone?
    what im trying to say
    is the iphone that good

OK, didn't see a reply to this, and since I have both phones, here's my take on this. The answer to your question depends on what you actually use a phone for:-

Nokia N95 just works. The iPhone will either cost you a lot of money (unlocked) or a fraught few hours (buying it cheap in the US and jailbreaking it), or both.

Simple things:- multi texting, callerID, voicemail just work on the N95. For a cracked iPhone they are not there or need installed workarounds.

iPhone interface is very good from a phone point of view, viewing web pages and of course the iPod that just happens to be there. The N95 in comparison starts to get annoying (why does it take 11 clicks to get to set a new Alarm?) and I don't use it for music due to the hassle of getting playlists/music on and off.

Bells and whistles:- I like the N95's FM radio, GPS and 5Mpixel camera. They are not the best when compared to dedicated devices, but they are always available in my phone. The iPhone has a 2Mpixel camera that takes still images only (no video recording, no radio, no GPS).

Battery:- If you play with all the features you'll get 8 hours from a N95 and 2 days from an iPhone. Once you start using them normally, a N95 will last two days, and the iPhone about 5 before requiring charging. Finally, the N95 can't/won't recharge via USB which is a shame since the iPhone does.

Work:- Both have WiFi, while the N95 also has 3G and supports Exchange push mail which means it will work with 'Work' email. The iPhone has the slower EDGE and only IMAP email which is less IT friendly/secure so may not fly with work.

There are other, specific differences (video playback codecs, etc) but that's about it. I kept my N95 and gave the iPhone to the missus so 'borrow' it back when required.

    Cheers
    Mec

    lads,

i made a boo boo....i over wrote the app support file in the following location

    File: /System/Library/Frameworks/AppSupport.framework/AppSupport

on my version 1.1.1 unlocked iphone using ibrickr. I did not take a copy of the original as i had that from my version 1.02 unlocked iphone.....now the phone wont turn on. It stays at the apple logo and will go no further.

I can still access the phone via ibrickr.....so if some one would be kind enough to send me a copy of the app support file from their 1.1.1 iphone, and i restore it in and hopefully solve the problem

    thanks

The posters, who have bought the iphone in newry - do they require you to sign up for a contract ?

Then i tried the 02 store and they didn't even ask my name.

I'd say if they dont bother to ask your name, there's a slim chance they make you sign a contract...

    Can someone explain here please:

If you buy an iPhone it comes with a 18month contract to O2 or something...So how can you just walk into a store and buy a iPhone if your not going to be obliged to fill the contract...How do they not ask you any details (that cant be possible??)

You sign up through itunes when you get home, itunes has to activate the iPhone otherwise its useless.

Oh okay...so when you get home you dont activate it instead you just unblock it, right?

Am quite interested in getting one now!!:D
Is it risky unblocking or is it easy enough??

Very easily done, once you follow the step by step instructions theres guides for PC and Mac here http://www.unlockthatiphone.com/process.php however they've released a new firmware 1.1.2 so keep an eye out as should have guides for that soon.

That's a load of sh1te you might pay that for it sim free (apparently they're going to be forced to sell it sim free in France) but it won't be that much here - he has no way of knowing what price it's going to be there hasn't even been an operator agreed yet. Every Tom Dick and Harry seems to be a wannabe tech journo these days!

Sorry for repeating what's already been asked, but it's 50 pages now! Before I start the unlock process can someone point me to the clearest guide out there? Is it iphone.unlock.no?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,324 ✭✭✭chrislad

Is there an app for multi texting? It's really handy for work to be able to send to more than one person at a time.

Easiest step by step guide there is- no need for a computer at all! But remember NOT to upgrade to the latest 1.1.2 firmware in itunes once u get it up and running!

I does involve a little "acting".... They asked if i was living up north or down south when i went to pay with a Southern Credit Card. I said "Up North, only moved up last week so i haven't go any bank cards yet"....
Avoid Carphone Warehouse, they ask too many questions.

    Nevermind, they're working again now.
Is there a way for me to get o2 active on my iphone through safari? I want to get their new free bebo service.

has anyone bothered updating to 1.1.2

Just to confirm that the iphone is available over the counter in O2 Newry, no questions asked, £269 on debit or credit card, cash not accepted for some reason. Carphone Warehouse ask too many questions, run credit checks etc, so not worth the hassle.

I seem to have hit a brick wall as regards unlocking, I have bypassed activation, wifi works, safari, ipod etc but my Vodafone Irl sim is not accepted. Has anyone else unlocked an O2 UK phone??

I too got mine in Newry (check a few pages back in this thread). I went to Carphone Warehouse and got asked too many questions. Went to O2 store and bought it no questions asked.

I have mine jailbreaked and activated. There is no unlock for UK iPhones yet. They have a different bootloader to the previous phones. All new iPhones worldwide are being release with this new bootloader so it's only a matter of time before someone hacks it.

Ok so i just got my iPhone there..it has version 1.1.2 though and i'm a bit confused about downgrading it. Most of the guides i have been looking at require iNdependence but is only for the mac. The windows counterpart iDemocracy "jailbreaks only 1.1.1 iPhones and automates quite a number of things including SSH and AppTapp installation"

this is takin from this website. http://tkhere.blogspot.com/2007/10/break-out-idemocracy-111-independence.html

Can someone please help me out with how to downgrade to versions 1.1.1 using windows.

    Thanks,
