have the knicks v boston celtics booked during our stay too. prob wont be great game but just going for the experience. sickened that the giants are playing at the exact time we fly into new york so we wudnt have a chance of making the game

I've booked tickets for a knicks game in Madison Square Garden for when I'm over in a few weeks time. I'll let you know how it goes. There is a giants game on at the same time we're there but it seems to be a lot harder to get tickets. You basically have to buy them off people who are season ticket holders and don't want to go. Check out www.stubhub.com if your interested. Anyway wouldn't really fancy sitting in an open stadium for 3 hours watching a football game, if it was the summer then I would be definitely up for it.

Been to MSg twice. once for hockey and once for basketball.

Hockey was sunday night and terrific atmosphere. basketball was sunday afternoon and far more laid back. Loads of celebs there. Enjoyed both trips. Boughts tickets from ticketmaster.com and picked them up at the arena.

Missus still has foam fingers from there (and a couple of similar events in Chicago). Make sure you get into it by drinking beer and eating hot dogs or popcorn

been to msg for a basketball game and 3 pro-wrestling events. Security are a*sholes and MSG is much smaller inside than you expect, United center in chicago looks way bigger. The tour of the garden is cool and you may actually get to walk on court if the teams are not training.

I've been to see most of the New York sports teams...

Baseball games are easiest to get tickets for as there are so many games.

2 Baseball teams in New York, The Yankees (based in the Bronx) and the Mets (based in Queens). Personally I thought there was better atmosphere at the Mets games. Anyway both are out of the World Series, so no more baseball in New York until next summer :) Season is usually March to October

Basketball: The Knicks play in Madison Square Garden. Season is November through to April/May. To be honest, I found the basketball pretty boring.

If you are going to go to Madison Square Garden, I would definitely recommend going to see an Ice Hockey game. The NY Rangers play there. Hockey season runs at the same time as basketball usually...

American Football season is September to January/February. Hardest of all to get tickets to, but without a shadow of a doubt, the best of the American sports to experience live.... You need to do your homework and try and get tickets months in advance.

You can be lucky sometimes and get tickets on ticketmaster.com. Search for the NY Giants and NY Jets. Chances are slim though. International (non-American) credit card purchases need to be done at least 10 days before the event. Both play in New Jersey at Giants Stadium in the Medowlands complex. About 30 minutes on the bus from the port authority bus station with regular service on game days...

Soccer: NY Red Bulls (formerly the NY Metrostars) also play in Giants Stadium. Season is April to November. I've been mostly to soccer games while I was there and it is quite enjoyable. Obviously being Irish and understanding a bit about soccer, you will notice that the standard is not that of the premier league or any of the big leagues in Europe, but its pretty good standard and they are competitive games.

    Websites:

http://www.ticketmaster.com (most tickets can be bought on here)

    Baseball:
    NY Yankees: http://yankees.mlb.com/
    NY Mets: http://mets.mlb.com/

    Basketball:
    NY Knicks: http://www.nba.com/knicks/

    Ice Hockey
    NY Rangers: http://www.newyorkrangers.com/

    Soccer:
    NY Red Bulls: http://www.redbulls.com/soccer/newyork/

    American Football:
    NY Giants: http://www.giants.com
    NY Jets: http://www.newyorkjets.com/

Transport to all venues is very good with subway available to all venues apart from Giants Stadium. Buses go from port authority bus station on game days for Giants, Jets and Red Bulls games...

New Jersery also has 2 teams... Ice-Hockey -> NJ Devils have just moved into a brand new arena in Newark.
Basketball -> NJ Nets play at the meadowlands complex in New Jersey as well. at the continental arena which is right beside Giants Stadium.

    http://www.nba.com/nets/
    http://devils.nhl.com/

They both used to share the continental arena. Plans are there for the nets to move to the new arena with the devils....

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prudential_Center
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nj_nets
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Izod_Center (the continental arena)

If you're going to the Meadowlands there are buses from the Port Authority put on for games.

Oh and the United Centre in Chicago is bigger.

Beer is sold in clear plastic "glasses" but soft drinks in massive plastic things with team logos everywhere. Buy a coke and then refill it with your beer...

european games may not work on DS

USA DVD's may not be compatible with your DVD player as they are a different region - there are some DVD players that are multi-region and you can play multi-region dvd's on your pc with the right software.

Just something which you may not have considered.

Picked up a load of DS games in Toys R Us in Times Square. You can't miss it, there's a ferris wheel in the front window. :D
They cost 45 euro here, $30 there and all work fine.

As far as I know you can have 2 suitcases up to 32 kgs between the 2. After that you start paying ;)

Electronic devices such as laptops etc should not be packed in check-in luggage. You need to put that in your carry-on...

    * No one bag to weigh more than 32 kgs (70lbs).
    * For Aer Lingus journeys between North America and UK/Europe, the baggage allowance for North America flights will apply to the entire journey within two weeks of initial departure date.

Baggage exceeding your free allowance will incur charges:

    * Baggage weighing between 36kgs - 46kgs (80lbs - 100lbs) will be charged €40/$50.
    * Baggage weighing between 47kgs - 64kgs (101lbs - 140lbs) will be charged €80/$100.
    * Any additional bag over the 2 free bags will be charged at €80/$100 per bag.

I picked up a DS in Best Buy and had no prob with it. The only thing I had to get when I got home was a 2-pin to 3-pin adapter to charge it. They cost about €3-5.

I'm going for a week end of November. I spent 3,000 for six night in Fitzpatricks plus flights for 2 of us . Booked through AmericanHolidays. Looking through the boards its seeming a little expensive. Has anyone else paid this much?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,260 ✭✭✭jdivision

Assuming your flights were around e500 including taxes, that means you're spending $466 a night on accommodation so up to you to decide whether it's worth that

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 43 broadwaybaby

Yeah I know its like 290 a night for the hotel but I was really wondering if anyone whos stayed at Fitzpatricks or another 4* hotel has paid this much because hotels here are not the expensive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,891 ✭✭✭Stephen P

I noticed when I was booking my holiday a lot of the 4* hotels where really expensive. So I opted for the Crowne Plaza on Times Square, looks really nice. Booked it with lastminute.ie, total package cost was €2,100, last time I checked the exact same package was gone up to €2,600.

New York hotels are amongst the most expensive in the world. Fitzpatricks are pretty expensive within NYC. Have a look at their website or the likes of hotels.com for comparison.

I've always found expedia.com pretty good for getting hotels in New York. The one piece of advice I would give is to read the customer reviews on that site or tripadvisor.

The flights you got seem pretty expensive. I'm heading at the end of Nov for a week and got flights for 300 with continental.

They were 980 return for two of us with aerlingus.

Hi.Going in March and was wondering - Is it worth bothereing to get a new laptop over there? Is the price difference significent enough?

Believe it or not, I am thinking of doing the same! Best Buy seems to be the best for price.

I've checked the prices of their Sony Laptops vs. the ones on sale here, and for the spec of one I am after, there seems to be a saving of between €300-400.

I'll be over there end of November too for the Thanksgiving sales, so will report back if I bagged a bargain!
