Can anyone suggest a bar that will be showing the All Ireland Hurling game next Sunday in the Manhattan area?

I'll be staying down on 1st street and will be looking for somewhere that will be showing it...any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Off hand I'd say that it'll be difficult to find one not showing it.

I'll try to confirm a place later today.

Hi can anyone advise - i am travailing to NY and happen to be there for the Labor Day weekend - am i better off waiting to do my shopping on the weekend or should i do it before the sales start?

I am fearful that - like in Dublin when the sales start there will be nothing decent on show and they just put out all the crap to sell off?

    Can anyone advise?

    Cheers...

Any one ever stayed here? http://www.gershwinhotel.com/

And, are the stores open on Sundays - especially this Sunday 2nd September (Labor day weekend)?

    Hi,

I'm staying in the Mildford PLaza Hotel next week for 4 nights (bit of a kip but cheap).

I'm paranoid about being robbed on holidays (particularly in the room) - and was thinking of using the Safety deposit box.

Has anyone used stayed in this hotel and had security concerns? Is it relatively ok to use the safety box?

    Thanks

    K

Thanks for that, I'd already seen it. Just wondering if anyone had any first hand experience?

I stayed at the Milford Plaza last April and although it's not a 5* hotel, I would highly recommend it!

The hotel is very safe, there's a security man constantly on the entrance to the lifts checking people's room cards, and we found this to be very thorough and secure.

We also used the safety deposit boxes and it requires your own security code.

Don't forget to check if you're entitled to the lounge on the 3rd floor, can't think of the name of it at the moment. It was a great benefit, free breakfast, tvs, papers and free internet access available all day!

A fabulous hotel in a truly wonderful city!

    Ms Inquisitive, you're my hero.

I'm bringing cash and really don't want to leave it in the room.

Is there safes in the rooms?

Or did you use the Hotel Safe located at the reception desk?

    Many thanks for the help.

    K

Just on the whole Jersey Gardens, Woodbury Common thing. I've been a number of times to both and have mixed ideas about which is better. The best solution would be to visit both. Last January I was in Jersey Gardens at the 10am opening and was finished by 2pm. Present your passport at the reception desk for some good offers - 25% off your purchase at the Tommy store for example. The layout of the place is terrible though, and it's carpeted throughout which makes walking on it tiresome. There's also no lockers, so if you are wearing a coat when you get there you'll be carrying the whole time. Jersey Gardens is close enough to NYC to visit for an hour or two.

Woodbury common is well laid out and you get a little map showing the location of the stores, you also get a discount book, but be aware and forewarned that some of the stores are selling items previously returned or exhanged by previous customers, i.e. not new. Also the Bose Store and the Sony outlet sell refurbished items. Although at least these stores do have the items clearly marked as such.

My wife prefers Woodbury Common, while I prefer Jersey Gardens, there is no set rule.

Next January I'll go to Woodbury Common for a change. :)

    Cheerio
    Howard

Depending on your needs or shopping requirements you could be perfectly happy going to neither and just going to Macy's.

We used the safe located in the room as we didn't want to be trawling up and down to reception every time and we left everything in it, from cash to passports, that's how secure we felt about it!

Was only in Jersey Gardens and found it...depressing...

Unless you're really desperate for (the frankly awful) Hilfiger or Polo stuff, I'd give it a skip. Wife liked it alright, but there's other places in Manhattan like the Burlington Coat Factories and the large place on Ground Zero (Century 21? Basement 21?) that you can visit and not waste half a day or a day around.

    Century 21 ;)

Ah. That's the one. There is some 'Basement' crowd too, think its 'Filene's Basement'. They're a bit on the grim side though.

    Anyway
    Filene's Basement

    Century 21
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Century_21_%28department_store%29

    Jersey Gardens
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jersey_Gardens

And the one you have to go to, and that can be very good if there's a sale on...

I'm going to New York for New Years, this is my third visit and I have flights and accomodation sorted.

I'm looking for advice/suggestions on where to spend New Year's Eve. There will be 8 people in total in my group and we want to book a table in one of the clubs. We're all mid to late 20s and are looking for somewhere lively, that has music (with lyrics) and good all round atmosphere.
I've found plenty of sites selling tickets for clubs on New Years and they all seem to offer a similar deal (table service, bottle of spirits/champagne, free bar for a set time and some form of buffet) for varying prices.

Can anyone recommend a specific club?

Anyone ever go to an NFL game or the likes? I'm heading over in November for the first time and would like to take in a New York Jets game that is on at the time. I was checking out this site and it looks fairly legit for getting tickets. So just wondering if anyone has ever done anything similar and would you recommend it or otherwise?

Yeah I see the basketball tickets are handy enough to pick up on ticketmaster.com but its a different story for the football. Apparently they simply just don't sell individual tickets, you have to be a season ticket holder or else on the waiting list for a season ticket. All those tickets on stubhub.com is people who cant go trying to offload of their tickets. Sure if all else fails I'll just go see a basketball game but I don't think they are as exciting as NFL games.

I don't know about NFL in NY this season - they're building a new stadium and using the current parking lot for construction right now. You have to park 5 miles away and then take a shuttle bus = no tailgating. And sure that's half the fun...

just checked on ticketmaster.com for individual games and it seems you can buy them ok for the jets.

Bus from port authority bus station is the best option...

Wouldn't get your hopes up about the Jets. They sell out really really quickly (in a matter of seconds). Most I know have got tickets through stubhub. Well above facevalue but reliable enough.

I'd recommend going to MSG for either hockey or basketball. A good night guarenteed

Hockey is way better... I found basketball to be pretty boring to be honest..

I preferred hockey too. But in Chicago it was the other way round, so it may depend on the day etc

Hi, I 'm looking to buy some reading glasses in New York, as they're a lot cheaper there. Can anyone advise me where to go?

Also can anyone tell me where to go to find good secondhand shops there?

    Thanks

I booked 5 nights in the Red Roof Inn for October and am hoping to stay the last two nights in the Marriot on Times Square(the one with the revolving restaurant).

Hope the Red Roof Inn is ok.We`ve never stayed there before but it sounds ok from reviews.
