Yeah Pythia's advice has me reassured as well. I'm going to the Red Roof Inn in November. Can you post back and let us know how it works out for you, cheers :)

Anyone know of somewhere a bit different to go for dinner in Manhattan?
I am going in November with a group of about 12 girls - it's not a special occasion, just a holiday.
We're planning to go ice skating on one of the nights and thought it would be cool to have dinner somewhere a bit different on another night.
I'm thinking something themed or interactive.
    Any ideas??

Im just back from New York, stayed in the Hilton Garden inn in Time Square, couldnt be in any better location.

    http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g60763-d99352-Reviews-Hilton_Garden_Inn_Times_Square-New_York_City_New_York.html

Stayed on the 11th floor, free broadband access, office desk. It also had a microwave and fridge, 32" LCD TV with ondemand movies and u could also play video games on it (didnt try as it cost extra)

The New York City Bus is 2 streets up from the hotel, so its great to hop on and off to visit the attractions.

Def would stay in this hotel again. Room was quite big for a new york hotel.

Expect to pay top dollar for the marriott marquis on times square. $500 per night ..

I stayed there, but work paid for it... :-)

It is a great location, but there are cheaper hotels around which are more modern etc.

Hey folks, I was just wondering if anybody could offer me any tips on deals or offers they might have seen for flights to NYC around New Years this year. Looking to fly out around the 27/28/29th of December and return a few days later, maybe the 5/6/7th of January. Aer Lingus have flights for €530ish at the moment.

Also, has anyone ever been to Buffalo, NY? I'm going to be taking in the Winter Classic hockey game up there on New Years Day and was wondering if people had any suggestions on places to stay or cheap ways of getting there from NYC. I've taken the Amtrak from New York to Chicago before which went via Buffalo, and I wouldn't mind doing that again, I'm just worried that given the time of year the tracks could be covered in snow, which would be a huge problem. Would Greyhound be a safer bet?

A once off, well hopefully a once off.Going to NY for our honeymoon in January and splashing out on a 5 star hotel for a change.Looking around central Manhattan and wondering has anyone stayed in a 5 star over there and could recommend one for us.

    Thanks in advance.:)

    Hey All,

Ive never been to the states before and ive wanting to go for ages. So myself and the GF have decided that paddy's day would be cool over there.
Just wondering would anyone be able to give me some advise on NY, like a fairly decent hotel central enough to sites/shopping or where the parade would be ect...
Is JFK the best Airport to fly into?
Can anybody advise me on the best shopping centers to visit or any must see's?
Any help no matter how big or small would be great as i dont have a clue about the place and really want to make the most of it.

    Thanks in advance.
    Vinnie.

paddys day (march) in NYC will be cold i suspect I was there in 2004 and it was freezing (about -4C and snowing).

Don't expect to get a decent room in Manhattan without selling your soul :D Crap hotels on the island cost $100 a night. There is already a sticky at the top of this page on NYC hotels, you can read all about them there.

The parade starts on 44th street and 5th avenue and goes as far as 86th street. You will get a good view north of 50th street imo.

JFK is probably the best airport to fly into from Ireland. I have never flown into Newark but I have heard so many bad things about it. You can get the subway from JFK straight into Penn Station (middle of Manhattan for $2 plus that extra fee they charge you if you use the JFK airport subway).

The best shopping centres are not found in NYC itself but in upstate New York about 30 miles away. Great bargins to be found there

Thanks Rossie, never spotted that tread in the stickies, will have a good read through that!!

    Hi burntcornlake
We're going to New York for Paddy's day :D and i've booked Radiocity Apartments. They get great reviews on tripadvisor and the price is great. For a studio apartment for the week it's costing us €900 and this is right next to Rockerfeller centre. They do book up fast though so i'd advise to book now if your going. You don't have to give a deposit and you can cancel up to 24hrs beforehand.
Also have a look at the new york city forums on trip advisor. You'll get lots of ideas from looking at that.:)

we've done paddys day in nyc twice,in 2003 and 2004. 03 it was mild, was walking around in a dubs jersey,04 it was baltic and snowing!!! the parade is good for half an hour/hour max, gets boring after that, just all marching bands etc. the best craic is in the irish bars, great buzz!! we normally stay in the red roof inn(see previous post a few posts back for info.),its pretty central in manhattan, macys is only around the corner, time sq. is only 10 min. walk away. jfk is handy enough to fly into, its $50 flat fare in a taxi to manhattan or a couple of $ on the subway. used the subway from jfk to penn st/34th st once, its a long haul and not particularly traveller-friendly if you're lugging suitcases with you. newark is good also, its only falldown is baggage reclaim, takes an eternity to get your luggage there. it is handier for getting to manhattan though, you can get a train from newark straight to penn. st. which is 2 blocks west of the red roof inn where we stay so its handy that way.

Just a quick update.I think I`ve managed to book the radio city apartments for the week.It looks like they had a cancelation(as they were booked up until March next year when I last checked).

I`m just waiting on a conformation e-mail,which can take up until 48 hours.

i have my fingers crossed as the location is perfect,it gets great reviews,I know people who have stayed there and recommend it and best of all its only $205 a night!

I`ll wait to see if we get confirmation before cancelling the Red Roof Inn.

Scratch that, they`ve just sent me an e-mail saying they have no availablity.A bit annoying really after going through the whole booking process on their website.

Well the Marriot fell through and so I contacted the Red Roof Inn to book an additional two nights.

The extra two nights were more expensive, fair enough, but they then changed the rate on three of the origanal 5 nights I had booked to a higher rate($50 a night!).

I couldnt believe it and e-mailed asking had they made a mistake. No they use the "rate of the day"even when amending a booking and so re-priced the whole week! So I try to give them more business and they increase the price of my original booking which I already have in writing.

    I`m disgusted.Maybe its standard practice,I dunno.
I`m on the lookout for an alternative and if one can be had for anywhere near the price they are charging I will gladly cancel the booking and tell them what to do with it.

Why don't you try priceline and go for a 4 star or higher. If your not sure what priceline is have a look on the new york city forum on tripadvisor and search for priceline. It's a site where you put in a bid for hotels and i believe you get them a lot cheaper.

Can you not just make a seperate booking on their site? You'd probably have to move rooms but it'd be cheaper.

    Hi all

Any tips for what are the "in" restaurants at the moment? We are heading over in Nov and going to treat ourselves to a couple of nice meals. Went to Nobu and Michaels last year. Nobu was v nice but prob not as special as the London Nobu. Saw Sarah Jessica Parker and Michael Broderick in Michaels - altho it was expensive and the food was only so-so.

Just on reading the other posts - my 2c worth - I think Woodbury Common is very good - huge selection of shops - nice layout - good bargains. Bus trip is a pain on the way back, but I do think it is better on weekends.

We usually stay at the Salisbury hotel which is perfect - decent location, each room has 2 double beds, fridge, microwave etc. Nothing fancy but huge buffet continental style breakfast included. It seemed to be much more expensive this year so we went for the Affinia Dumont which a few other people highly recommend

    Cheers

I'm sure you could find that out yourself, have a good trawl thru this megathread.

    This'll get you started:
    www.delta.com
    www.aerlingus.com
    www.continental.com
    www.ebookers.ie
    www.gohop.ie

Basically punch in your dates and whichever comes back with the lowest price...well you'll figure it out from there ;);)
