    well, I'm just back from Florida, and I bought two iphones on Wednesday and I wasn't asked about proof of address. I was simply told by the person serving me the as a general warning the phones will not work outside of the US.

    Could be the luck of the draw with who serves you i guess?

    I read in PDA essentials that they will be available in the UK next month (and that is confirmed) for £269 GBP

    And the rumour about the 3G 16GB has been dashed due to battery concerns.

    My only gripe is again the lack of push mail which would swing it for me

    To be precise the 9th Nov with O2

    Yup, that is a total ripoff. I will hopefully be getting my iphone this week from NY for $399 which converts to 280euro(:D) and i will unlock it myself using this guide;

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,409 ✭✭✭madmoe

    @rc28,
    Don't forget mate you will have to pay tax on it so that brings it up to $436 which is €303 approximately.

    iPhone seems to have a problem with SMS coming from short numbers, such as 171 for Vodafone voicemail.

    Have googled this many times and so far haven't found a fix

    I have mine set to download my gmail and my Exchange (via IMAP) a/cs every 15 mins so not quite push, but it does work well

    Perhaps there is a hack someone to change the 15 mins to 5 mins

    On vodafone, you can set your notification to call you when you get a voicemail as opposed to text you. This is the only workaround at the moment.

    In your opinion would you drop a Windows Mobile Phone for this as I am thinking of leaving the Orbit to one side and to venture into this.

    Even if i can get kinda push it would be handy for me.

    I know you've had almost as many PPC's as me but is it worth looking into this ?

    True :-)

    Actually was using N95 before iPhone and am still using iPhone two weeks later (nearly a record for me on the same phone!), still using N95 for GPS

    Lack of SMS forwarding and sending to multiple people is the main complaint I would have about it, browser is certainly the best I've used, also as I am on Vodafone don't have EDGE only GPRS, but O2 and Meteor have EDGE

    When did you buy them? This seems to be a pretty recent policy of apple's because I found a forum full of canadians giving out that they were refused iphones when they crossed the border to buy them last week, the solution was to just give someone on the street $20 to buy it for them! I'm sort of worried i won't be getting an iphone now, my buyer doesn't have much time to go shopping for me, let alone go searching for an at&t store where there is a slim chance they wont ask for proof of US residency. I hope he doesn't flaunt his irish accent!

    I bought them last week in the apple store in Soho.

    Pretty sure AT&T wont sell them to you. Gotsa be an Apple store if your looking for a noncontract one.

    Unfortunately not at the moment. Before the new 1.1.1 firmware came out there were some easy enough guides for windows but now there are none- the methods out there for windows are just way too complicated for noobs and are prone to glitches. However, the latest post from that site seems to indicate he will release a guide for windows soon but it will be WAY more complicated than the mac version;http://www.hacktheiphone.com/111/iphone_information_1.html
    I will hopefully be using my brothers mac to unlock mine.

    New York or anywhere in the US, any websites ane ebay are overpriced and frankly the iphone just isn't worth 550-700euro.

    Excellent step by step iphone unlocking guide for windows users here;http://www.hacktheiphone.com/111/iphone_step1_windows.html
    Unfortunately it's very long so you'll need over an hour spare.

    If you have a version 1.0.2 or whatever the old version is and you update it to 1.1.1, this makes it unuseable yes? Can you re-unlock it? Is there any guaranteed ways???

    But why would you go to the bother(it's a complicated process)? There is nothing groundbreaking about 1.1.1, i'd only upgrade if a new firmware update enabled video recording or flash in safari. You also risk bricking your phone- it's not worth the stress IMO.

    Does anyone have a step by step tutorial to upgrade an unlocked iPhone 1.0.2 to 1.1.1 for Mac?

    Or has anyone even attempted this?
