You can't compare the UK pricing structure with Ireland, tariffs here aren't as good as the UK ones generally, and the point is that the iphone is locked to the carrier.

'Out of the box' you can only use it with whoever the carrier is, hence the price premium on unlocked models....

Is 02 going to be the carrier here as well?

I presume we all saw the article on engadget saying that due to French Law, Orange will be able to sell unlocked iPhones officially in France?

Yay, the free unlock called "anysim" now works with firmware version 1.1.1
I've decided to get an iphone now, should have it by the end of next week from NY. I'll use my brother's mac to do the jailbreaking/activating process first though(it's much easier on osx).
One question though; my brother has an iphone and syncs with his mac- if i sync my iphone with his computer, before i connect it to mine, will it see all other pc's as "guest computers" and i wont be able to use the iphone with them?

It only supports virgin 1.0.2 or 1.1.1 phones, those of us with already unlocked 1.0.2 will have to wait a bit longer it appears, though there are reports of a util being developed to virgin-ise unlocked 1.0.2s :-)

Yes...wait and get ripped off royally. One of the papers here totted all the costs up over the two years and it came to an eye popping €1,500 or more.

I doubt tbh, the handset will be a little expensive around N95 type prices and the price plans will be basically the same prob with an unlimited data bundle put on if you want it, all in wont work out much more expensive than a regular bill pay phone.

that was in the US $100 p/m they wont do that here.

3rd party (native) apps coming for the iPhone / iPod Touch... Steve Job's just posted a letter on Apple.com:
    http://www.apple.com/startpage/
Let me just say it: We want native third party applications on the iPhone, and we plan to have an SDK in developers’ hands in February. Steve Jobs

    Hi Guys,

Just wanna clear up a few things for ya,

First, anySIM 1.1 will unlock 1.1.1 Firmware, @ skearon, you can use it if you wish but you will first need to use ieraser to completly delete the baseband firmware and then either re-flash it or upgrae to 1.1.1 to get the new modem baseband firmware.

As for the prices issue, the iPhone will be released here in Ireland on February 9th for 399euro, you will have to pay a minimum of 50euro per month for a contract and i would expect even more. The reason for this is O2 bagged the iPhone contract by giving them 40% of the revenue generated by the iPhone to Apple. Tariffs in Ireland are always higher than other countries anyway so you can probably expect to pay 60euro a month.

Due to French Laws, Apple HAVE to sell the iPhone unlocked, however, you can expect to pay a minimum of 999euro to get one. Orange are paying alot of money to Apple to get the iPhone contract, they will have the final say as to what price an unlocked one will cost, french papers today have even qouted it will cost 1500euro. Apple and Orange dont want to sell unlocked iPhones but if they have to, you will pay a hell of alot of money to get one.

And miss the Christmas market? My source (Who speaks directly to an Apple employee in Holyhill here in Cork) tells me a November launch is imminent. There's already jobs advertised for Apple in Cork to hire iPhone techs, and there's stocks of the iPhone up there.

That's pure speculation on your, and their part. There is no 'minimum price of 999 Euro' set as of yet. I would estimate that the SIM-free price of the handset to be approx 700 Euro for the 8 Gig, and 850-900 for the 16 Gig that's imminent.

I have seen so many conflicting msgs about this I would be grateful if you could clarify

I have a 1.0.2 iPhone unlocked using the free Erica app, if I use iEraser and then iTunes to upgrade to 1.1.1 I will have an iPhone with 1.1.1 that is identical to a virgin 1.1.1 and can then unlocked, activate as a virgin 1.1.1

Have you actually done this yourself, i.e. take an 1.0.2 unlocked via a free app and now have 1.1.1 running, unlocked to use any sim and fully functioning?

At the moment there really is no easy method for windows users unfortunately.

wonder if the operating system / gui will be in french ??

it might ship to france unlocked BUT may only have one language pack pre installed ( and locked down to )

an unlocked iphone in french would not be much good anywhere else!!

I've got my iPhone a day now, coming from a Nokia S60 platform, and I'm really disappointed.

The Bluetooth was the first shock, no ability to assign short names to devices that I've paired, and no ability to receive/send files. The next disappointment was texting, the interface is absolutely useless, and requires 200% concentration, whereas with the traditional keypad on my S60 device, I could literally text while making a cup of tea and not have to look for the mistakes I was making. The Caller ID was a shambles, being unable to resolve numbers stored in International format to the incoming 10 digits Vodafone supply in their CLI. I had to download an altered file from an Australian guy to make that work. There is no facility to assign custom sounds to the text messages/new eMails. The speakerphone volume is useless, the handset volume is also useless. The sound quality makes everyone sound tinny, nasal, and unnatural. The eMail support while fine for POP, is useless for gMail. gMail's key is in conversational eMails, but given that the iPhone makes a huge song and dance about it's gMail support, it only does so in a POP fashion, breaking the conversations into individual eMails and confusing the seamless transition from gMail on the web, to gMail on the handset. The irony of this, is that text messages are stored in a gMail conversational format! The camera has no flash, and no settings to choose from, ie, zoom, or scene.

I'm going to stick it out for another few days, but I see myself going back to a Nokia phone, and end up waiting until Nokia release their touchscreen device next year.

    Here is a question,

Suppose I was to get an I-Phone. Can I use it as an MP3 player if I was on a flight, considering your are not allowed to turn on your phone on planes.

    Hi prospect.

The iPhone has an "airplane" mode that switches off the wi-fi and phone sections and allows it to be used as an iPod

It really interesting how people react in different ways to the iPhone. I came to it after using a Nokia N70 for 2 years and I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders phone wise. for me the iPhone just works. Brilliantly. Yes the caller ID was an issue but it just involves overwriting one file on your phone. After that it works great. The Bluetooth decision was a strange one on apples part ok. As was the inability of saving attachments. I dont use Gmail so I cant comment on that but my Imap mail works beautifully.

The keyboard takes practice. Its a whole new way of typing on a mobile so from expert texters on a normal mobile I can really see how they would have a problem. However I love the touch keyboard. I have fat fingers and I got used to it after a few days and I can now type a lot faster than I could on my N70

So is the iPhone perfect? No absolutley not. but its the perfect phone for me. It meets my needs 100% but I totally agree its not for everybody. Yes some of the smart phones are way ahead as regard features. However after using a N95 for a few weeks I could not go back to a normal phone now. the thing was nearly lodged in a bloody wall at the end

I came from using an N70 for 2 years also and I prefer the iPhone to it hands down. One of the big things with ALL the Nokia's I have owned and seen is that they are VERY slow sometimes, especially when you go into the main menu and opening texts etc.

I am annoyed about Bluetooth on the iPhone being so poorly implemented and the fact that the iPhone does not show up as an external HDD when connected to a PC. Also, the inability to manually manage your music is a big thing for me. I only hope these will be rectified with a firmware upgrade.

While I'm ranting, not being able to sent multiple pictures with an e-mail is VERY annoying and it would be very nice to be able to transfer files via Wi-Fi to\from the phone.

I want to fix the international number problem, can anyone tell me who exactly this is done, what file do I need to use and where do I put it?

    M

    Hi Ned,

    Ok,

So the launch is imminent?? Who is the provider?? O2 Ireland and O2 Uk are two completly seperate companies!! No irish carrier has signed any contract with Apple.

Holyhill is full of iPhones, your probably right, why would that be?? Maybe because Holyhill is the European headquaters and main distribution plant!! As the for iPhone Tech jobs, the will be dealing with all the people from the UK, France and Germany who will have the iPhone before Christmas.

Who knows? My guy certainly doesn't. His job doesn't encompass that responsibility. But do you think the Christmas market is one to miss out on? That's why I think he's not bulls*tting me when he says it's a November launch.

I'm not trying to put you down or anything, but I just think it would be very short sighted to rule out a Christmas sales boom for Apple. And I do think the unsubsidised prices of iPhones will be a little more reasonable than some of the estimates being bandied about.

    Here's a thread that willl help :
    http://modmyiphone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6903

Use the file for 7 digits (The first one), and copy it to your iPhone using the instructions in the thread. You'll need to mount your iPhone as a drive on your computer using one of the free utilities out there to do it.

I bought three iPhones in Soho in NYC and wasnt asked for a mailing address.

When did you buy them? This seems to be a pretty recent policy of apple's because I found a forum full of canadians giving out that they were refused iphones when they crossed the border to buy them last week, the solution was to just give someone on the street $20 to buy it for them! I'm sort of worried i won't be getting an iphone now, my buyer doesn't have much time to go shopping for me, let alone go searching for an at&t store where there is a slim chance they wont ask for proof of US residency. I hope he doesn't flaunt his irish accent!
