Worked out at €395 shipped. Cheapest they are going for really is $499 + $50 odd for shipping.
    Few questions:

I've got relatives in the states. And since the 4GB iPhone has been reduced to $299 [€215]:D I was wondering could I get them to buy one for me from an apple store and send it over. Then I'll try get it unlocked via http://www.iphoneunlocked.eu/.
Is it not that easy to just buy it over the counter?
Would my cousin have to sign up to an AT&T tariff?
Would I be able to "activate" the phone here or would this have to be done in the states?
Should I wait for it to be launced in Europe instead [I'm on Meteor so I would still have to get it unlocked]

    Thanks

Ya I think you just buy it over the counter and you are meant to set up the contract yourself through itunes. Not sure about the activation I would assume you don't have to sign up with at&t to do it otherwise whats the point of being able to unlock it.

There are rumours of a 3g version with 16G for Europe so it might be worth holding off a couple of weeks to see. There's talk of an announcement next week

Yeah im going to wait til after the press briefing in london next week seems to all pointing to a europe iphone launch announcement at least for tmobile in germany, o2 in uk (may mean ireland but at least it would be easily imported from there) and orange in spain

    http://www.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idUSL1431969920070914

whether its 3g or not is another matter, id prefer a 16gig version instead of 3g personnally, both would be great though.

Send me a pm dont want to be posting link here but ya 100% works. They are using iphonesimfree software.

The thing about the europe release i reckon it wont be released on pre pay for awhile and you wont be able to buy it over the counter it will be a sign contract then you get your phone well i no if i owned apple that what i would do. I couldnt care less about 3g anyway so doesnt make a difference to me 16g would be nice but 8 g will do.

Right, ordered my 8gig iPhone last night and its just left the U.S. with the courier.

Should have it by Monday morning.

Unless iUnlock gets a better GUI then I will pay $50 for the iphonesimfree download.

Will update on how I get on.

How much did it cost you Kev? I Am going buying another 2 in America when i am over in 2 weeks and get them unlocked.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 242 ✭✭kevmac

Roughly about $500 (€361) including courier but I am getting other stuff shipped as well.

Will probably be hit for Customs as well but we'll see how it goes.

And will probably flog it on after a month or so and then buy the 3G version next Easter.

Sister and a mate are battling it out to see who gets it:D

Just a Word of warning to people, been told that There is a Apple firmware update soon, 1.1.1. Could be released as early at monday,Reckon it going to have to be released by Tuesday because the update has the international keyboard but more to the fact it back lock your iphone with ease. Iphone dev said that apple could lock the phone with the update and reports state it is more than likely the case, Other reports state it could even Brick your phone(I dont think it likely as apple would get inundated with complaints etc) But i would hold off to see what apple do after tuesday. The new update is mainly for the wifi store with other little updates with it and a lock update.

    hey powerhouse dan,
since u said ur going over to buy 2 more iphones in 2 weeks, maybe you could answer my question...can you simply buy it over the counter, and activate it without signing up for at&t?

    how does it work exactly?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 670 ✭✭✭GekkePrutser

Yes, you can just buy it over the counter, in the Apple store anyway (Don't know about the AT&T stores). You are expected to register it with AT&T at home and activate it via iTunes.

If you don't register it with AT&T you can't activate it however there is a workaround for that. So you don't have to sign up for a contract to use the phone.

Can someone help me clear something up? My brother is going to newyork soon and he's wondering whether if he bought an iphone he would be able to bypass the at&t activation and then unlock it using something like this:
    http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/15/anysim-is-here-open-source-gui-iphone-unlock-app/
All of the unlocking programmes I've seen seem to be for already activated iphones. Also if he successfully unlocked it would he be able to use it with his vodafone PAYG sim? He's a registered 3g user so would the sim still work in it or would he have to buy a new one?
The exchange rate with the dollar is very good so the $399 turns into only 288euro which is a really good offer for an unlocked iphone.
    Thanks in advance.

    Btw here's a good link for summing up the various hacking methods;

Thanks, do you have a link for that program? Iphonesimfree does exaclty what the program i linked to does except for a fee and re updates the open source community is way way bigger than the iphonesimfree team so that shouldn't be a problem. Btw do you also have a link for that cork company? Pm me if you want.

Think i am as excited as you are to find out how this works out!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,246 ✭✭✭rc28

Can anyone who has/is getting an iphone please report their experiences on here? How will the iphone's data apps work with a vodafone payg sim? At&t have an unlimited data package so it doesn't affect them in the states but for vodafone will these apps just keep wasting up your credit as they try to download their info? Can you easily disable them to only use wifi? Will the iphone definitely work through vodafone's new data packages(99c a day) or will you have to mess with lots of settings and are calls and texts guaranteed to work? Sorry for all the q's but my brother is really apprehensive about buying one now as the unlocking process seems really complicated too, even to just get around the activation process!
Would anyone recommend an easy to follow step-by-step tutorial to do all the unlocking etc?

I got my iphone anyway working Perfect on Meteor love it, Strange though went onto mymeteor website and went to download settings and it knew i had a Apple iphone.... Weird!!!!!

Any chance of a few photos PowerHouse? I'd love an iPhone just to try it out.

Did you get it past the activation or did that cork company do all that? Are the apps wasting up your credit trying to access net when out of wifi?
Again, has anyone had any luck with unlocking the iphone themselves? My brother can get the iphone for 288euro when he goes to new york this week so it's pretty stupid that all that is keeping him from getting this great offer is the confusion over unlocking it (and activating it also).

    By using the paid unlock software again? This time you will have to activate it yourself, would you recommend this program for activation without at&t(no it's not a scam);
    http://www.dvdtoiphone.net/unlock-iphone.html
    http://applevibe.blogspot.com/2007/08/activating-iphone-without-at-too-easy.html
This appears to be the easiest way to do it at the moment.
