The technique used to do this is called "Cold Reading" and is a well-known trick amongst stage magicians and other performers. There are many online guides to what's going on (see here, here, here or here; there are plenty more elsewhere).

If you want to buy a book on how to do it well enough to make a living from it, you could do worse than to buy Ian Rowland's excellent Full Facts Book Of Cold Reading -- it's the book used by Derren Brown, amongst others.

I am new to this board. Am looking for a good medium in connection with ancestors re a book and t.v. documentary I am involved with (my grandmother). Have been trying to get Maire Lundberg to see me but she has been out of the country for months. Do you think Carol Byrne or John O'Shea would suit? I have picked up their names from the bulletin board. Don't know where they are though. I am in South County Dublin. Can you advise? Would be very grateful. Thanks Browdonn

He is meant to be very good and you have to book him well in advance.

Yea I heard he's good. He operates in a pub or room behind a bar or some where like that. You ring in advance and when you arrive you get a ticket and wait your turn. By all accounts he is good.

it seems to be a task trying to get numbers here, partially because a lot of the recommendations are a little dated or the posters aren't available to respond.
You could try checking out http://www.angelsofireland.ie/ (seemingly its the only available/credible link here although I have no personal experience of the reader)
there is more information and a contact number available on the site.

Charter read,no offence intended,just please please please don't waste your time buying into this stuff..I've seen many people who get too deep into all this crap and end up wasting their time,money and lives on something worthless..my mother was deeply spiritual all her life then got hit by a drunk driver one fine day,and my dad started seeing a psychic,when I found out I had to come along and low and behold it was about convincing as Keith Barrys best magic tricks,which is to say not at all.Most psychics are charlatans,conmen,scum of the earth and yes I do know quite a few including one particularly famous one,who i've often caught out,so im not just being mean for the sake of it and finally yes the psychic in mullingar used to sell roses on the street,until he got some books on psychic methods,fact.

Sorry for your loss. Being spiritual and buying into psychic advice are two very different things, maybe someday you and your father will find the legacy your mother left and receive a greater comfort through it.
