This will be the 4th time ive bought it. First time was the EC Entertainment ultrabit dvd. Still have it and to my knowledge it's still the only version that has the last road to hell sequence included in the actual film. Then I bought the Grindhouse blu ray edition. Then I bought the stunning wooden box / film can blu ray edition that DTM put out about 10 years ago. Im an idiot when it comes to double / triple dipping.🤣

I watched it once but I'd have zero interest in handing over money to watch actual animal cruelty.

I've at least 3 different releases of this.. original 2 Disc Grindhouse release with a cool fold out poster, Australian 2 Disc release and a VCD version (anyone else familiar with VCDs'?)

This is the perfect opportunity to upgrade to a BluRay/4K edition. Although ideally, I'd love to get my hands on an original UK precert VHS on the 'GO' video label.

A lot of potential viewers are put off from watching this due to the inclusion of the few brief animal cruelty scenes.. understandably so!.. but they're missing out on a classic '80's exploitation flic especially when pretty much all modern home media releases provide the option to view with those scenes excluded.

Only watched Falling Down on BR during the week after watching Basic Instinct. I will likely buy it on 4K, but I will definitely buy To Live and Die in L.A.

Yes, the salary is enormous, I understand that, but that doesn't affect my soul.

I've been caught with Arrow before - re Weird Science UHD vs BD. Their packaging should be clearer - their limited edition sets with booklet disappear quickly but the standard editions look identical with nothing to obviously differentiate them. Unlike Vinegar Syndrome, Indicator or Imprint.

Severin are releasing the unrelentingly bleak 1980s classic Threads, in 4k later this year. Despite being one ive watched several times over the years and the passage of time, it still packs multiple gut punches into its 2 hour run time.

    Good stuff.

Shame they stopped absorbing the VAT on international orders. I haven't ordered off them since that change but have a few items on the wantlist namely

    Bloody Legend Cliff Twenlow box

    House Of Psychotic Women 2

    Spanish Exorcismo

Eurocrypt of Christopher Lee Volume 3

    Andy Milligan Gutter Auteur

    The War Game as well

And a Disco Italiana box plus The Music Machine (disco glitter fest from London, 1979) which I saw on VHS many years ago while skipping PE.

Faces Of Death finally makes it to UHD, wow. Remember watching it on VHS in the late 1980s. Rented from the dodgiest video library in town.
Arrived as part of my latest Vinegar Syndrome order. The Eurocrime Rarities set looks great - have only seen Day Of The Cobra. The Forgotten Gialli series has thrown up some serious gems, now moving into the 1990s with volume 9. The Shaw Brothers box has a nice mix of magic, atmosphere and dread. Nice to get quality editions of The Gambler, Body Of Evidence, Boxcar Bertha etc. Will post up reviews in the other thread as I go through them.

Rarewaves have launched their new website.

They have a new feature for wishlists where you can separate them out with a name of your choice like putting down a botiqiue label or studio if you want to save wishlists for buying 4K Blu-rays etc.

Mark Kermode will be happy about this no doubt.

I've never ordered from Rarewaves - what's the service like and do they use IOSS?
For UK orders that Amazon or the boutique labels can't fulfill, I've been using Chalkys - no VAT issues, just a little slow.

Just discovered this thread and reckon I'll be a frequent visitor.

Anybody think of some examples of blu-rays that got a US release that haven't gotten an Irish/UK release?

Region Free ideally, normally try to pick up some stuff when I'm over and gonna be there again soon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 179 ✭✭A Pop Fans Dream

Depends what you're into but Vinegar Syndrome in the US are great for cult movies - https://vinegarsyndrome.com/ - albeit many are region locked to A.

Imprint in Australia are very prolific, if a little pricey - but practically everything they put out is region free - some great genre / director box sets.

Thanks for the reply. Haven't seen much from Vinegar Syndrome releases in the past for me. I know Kino Lorber put out some good US stuff too.

My questions was quite broad tbh and to be fair without knowing my tastes it can be a hard answer. I was just wondering if anyone knew some notable films that got a physical release on blu-ray or 4k in America but never over here.

A few off the top of my head head would be Beavis and Butt-head Do America, some of Dreamworks traditionally animated films, Companion, Clerks II, some horror series in particular used to be bad for it.

I'm just wondering if anyone knew any really notable ones that are deadly to get over here but easier on the other side of the Atlantic.

Adaptation and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind were two KL 4ks I imported which I don't think have an equivalent release over here at all. I also picked up their dollars trilogy disks ages ago but they're pointless now with the Arrow versions available.

I did see KL brought out a 4k of an underseen 90s classic action film last month which I might have to pick up if it goes on sale 😂

Yep. Rarewaves use IOSS for EU customers. Their delivery to Ireland is quite slow like Chalkys in the UK.

When you got deliveries from Rarewaves not that long ago; they used to ship Irish orders with Fastway Couriers up until they went into administration. All Irish orders shipped from Rarewaves website today are now shipped with An Post.

There is also good news regarding the films directed by Ken Loach which include The Wind That Shakes The Barley. Seven of his films have been handed over to Curzon Films library in the UK.

We might get a 4K Blu-ray release of The Wind That Shakes The Barley within that line up in the near future.

Funnily enough I've found that Rarewaves pre orders seem to deliver quite quickly but a regular order will take weeks.

Ooooh Adaptation is a great shout.

It definitely used to be a bigger problem. I remember bringing back the first Terminator film or the Friday the 13th films back from the States when you couldn't get them here. Boutique Blu-ray labels have definitely made collecting far easier.

Been eyeing up a Miyazaki collection from Amazon US but it's often sold by bootleggers apparently.

I feel like there is a good chance of a lot of the Miyazaki stuff getting a 4k release here since a lot of them seem to be getting restorations the last few years.

Fincher has been doing a James Cameron and tinkering with the Fight Club remaster

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,591 ✭✭✭ThePott

Not altogether surprising. Fincher is a bit of a perfectionist, he made changes when Se7ven got the 4k treatment too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,960 ✭✭✭✭Tony EH

I don't consider that to be perfecting anything.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,591 ✭✭✭ThePott

That's fair. Perfectionist might be a poor choice of words. I meant it in the sense more that he strives to perfect something, not saying that his changes are an improvement.

He's meticulous and a nitpicker. Seeing flaws where there isn't any at times. Makes him a bit of a pain to work for I'd imagine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,960 ✭✭✭✭Tony EH

He is, but I just don't see the value in pedantic and silly changes that some directors do to their work. What, exactly, does scrubbing Carter's slight skin imperfections do except make for a minor change to the scene where she looks waxy. Cameron has come under scrutiny, too, for his changes to his movies. Weird AI scrubs that don't do anything for the movie itself.

It's an odd obsession that some film makers have that I find peculiar. Spielberg did it with 'E.T.', but at least left the original intact for fans who just want to own the film in the state that they first enjoyed it in. Of course, George Lucas has famously been extremely intransigent with the Star Wars trilogy much to the consternation of fans the world over.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,591 ✭✭✭ThePott

I'm not disagreeing or defending it. I think it's a pointless change too. I saw some people say the changes were to do with the colour changes in tv technology over time but don't know how accurate that is. He changed the prescription on the medication bottle too.

Cameron's use of AI is questionable for sure, it's put me off some of the 4k's of his films. Even before that he's redone some effects for Titanic and Terminator 2 as well. Spielberg added some effects to Close Encounters as well, although the ET walkie-talkies are far more infamous. Which he'd regret afterwards.

I think as you said, not having access to the originals is definitely a sore spot. Some directors, Fincher for sure but Cameron even more so will forever tinker with their work. Cameron already mentioned converting Aliens to 3D this week and it won't be shocking that if he does convert it that more changes are made to the film.

Some directors for whatever reason can only see non-existant flaws in their films when they look back at them. Either because visual standards or conventions of filmmaking have changed since it's released or because more modern technology makes fixing the imagined issues far more affordable or easy. It's pointless to us and frustrating when the original version becomes more obscure but they won't stop. They see it as their film as opposed to a communal piece of relevant pop culture and studios are only more delighted to tout an improved re-release or pimp out a new 'edition' for streaming or physical releases.

Fairly comprehensive breakdown of scenes he has changed, probably won't notice a lot of it. I've ordered the steel book from Amazon Italy but not releasing there until end of month.
