The Revenent looks class. Logan comes with Noir version in 4k too which is pretty cool.

Planet Earth 2 as well of course.

Last disc I bought was Apocalypse now. Would recommend that too.

Obviously the film may split opinion but Pacific Rim is my reference disk.

On a similar theme, are there any good websites or YouTube channels that review 4K discs?

Spider-man Into The Spider-Verse is stunning on 4k Disc. I just picked up the 4k remaster of The Elephant Man, but haven't had a chance to watch it, have heard very good things though.

Best ones I've got (in order)

Dawn of the Dead (Big £80 box set)
    Alien
    Jaws
    Into The Spiderverse
    Predator
    Stand By Me
    Revenant

    Other good ones...

    Bladerunner 2049
    Dunkirk
    The Fog
    Halloween & Halloween 2018
    The Shining
    Phantom Thread

Restorations of old classics are the way to go. Always check the reviews on bluray.com as well before purchasing.

    Total Recall
    Beetlejuice
    Flash Gordon
    The Alfred Hitchcock Collection
The Lord of The Rings/The Hobbit Trilogy
Batman movies from Tim Burton/the late Joel Schumacher
    Don't Look Now
    Beverley Hills Cop
    Superman The Movie
    Harry Potter Collection
    Full Metal Jacket

    I hope that's a good list.

"Dredd" looked and sounded surreal in 4K.

I haven't seen it but I've heard great things about "Apollo 11" in 4K

Anybody got any advice on buying a Blu Ray player? I've got the Middle Earth collection (Hobbit and LOTR extended editions) but no player yet. I see there is a massive variation in price from about 50 euro to over 300. Not keen on spending too much as I probably won't use it much. Do the cheap ones do the same basic job or would I end up regretting being a skinflint? Would have posted a thread in the Home Entertainment forum but is seems pretty quiet in there.

    Would the PS3 play 4k?

I got a blu ray player for €270. It's pricey but the plan is to build up my collection.

PS3 would only play blue ray however an Xbox one S would play 4K

If it were me, the Sony UBP-X700 for £199 from Richersounds.ie is the one to go for. Does Dolby Vision and HDR10 so will work great with whatever TV/disc you are using. Has twin HDMI outputs to send separately to TV and amplifier. Plays 4K/BluRay/DVD/CD/SACD/3D and also will play Netflix/ Amazon Prime in 4K.
Tell RS that it's £185 on Amazon today and they will match the price, which means you can add 6yr warranty for £18.50 and delivery to ROI is £7.

If you want to go cheaper, Panasonic DPUB150 is just £119. No Dolby Vision and just a single HDMI but a bargain of a 4K disc player.
    Hope that helps.

I've read Sony generally do these well, Bram Stoker's Dracula in particular is meant to be fantastic home theatre experience.

Looking at the upcoming LOTR release and the HP films, pricey enough but I suppose it's just money spent on non existent nights out at this point.

Tempted to get one of them for Christmas.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,896 ✭✭✭Hande hoche!

Jaws was spectacular. Amazing the background details you could pick out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,027 ✭✭✭✭titan18

I've a bunch of MCU films, Dark Knight trilogy and Harry Potter collection.

I think The Dark Knight and Batman Begins are impressive. Thor Ragnarok is probably my favourite of the MCU stuff.

Although, if you want the best test stuff, you're not really going to wrong with things like Planet Earth.

I'm interested in how the LOTR one goes. Based on the blu-ray, I've a feeling that Fellowship and Two Towers, could be excellent but ROTK might be weaker

Ordered the LOTR boxset along with the Matrix boxset which is on sale from the Warner Bros shop. 10% off as was my first purchase there (code is Welcome) 95 GBP for the two boxsets. Reading great things about the Lord of the rings discs

I am jumping on the bandwagon ordering LOTR as we speak

Bit annoying though that the LOTR one will get a different better edition (with extras) next year then. Cant decide do I want to buy this one or wait for the better edition

Well, I already have LOTR on VHS, dvd, extended editions dvd and Bluray. So not sure another 2 more editions is smart

    Sorry, just curious.

Do people buy these 4k discs just for image quality and background detail.

People seem to be recommending just mainstream blockbusters and talk about details they picked up in the background rather than the actual merits of the film as a story and acting quality.

As far as i know 4k blu ray is region free so i got 3 of the Blue Underground recent releases. Zombie, Maniac and The New York Ripper.

Also got the Cult Discs 4k of Suspiria via Indiegogo.

Don't actually have a 4k tv yet! But the Xbox down samples them to HD.

Blue Underground are getting rave reviews for the quality of the transfers.

Not all 4K discs are created equally in terms of image quality, so for some movies it's just not worth the upgrade from say a standard Blu-ray. And I guess lots of people want movies that will really show off their fancy 4K home cinema set up. It's up to the individual to decide if the movie itself is something they want to sit down and watch.

I think 4K is a gimmick unless you have a screen that is at least 60 inch's.

1080p should be more than enough res for most people.

People buy 4K movies because they look and sound stunning compared to blu rays. Most of us would be upgrading from already owned versions of a film or have seen the film multiple times, so there is no point talking about the story or acting.

My only negative about collecting 4K is they are way too expensive. I wish they would not include the blu rays too and that would knock a bit off.

Totally agree. People who say this are the same people who can't hear a difference in various levels of audio quality. Bluray is fine, but good 4k is a big step up.

I rather better quality 1080p with less compression before going to 4k.

    Ye that’s called blu ray.

No I'm not happy with the compression on blu ray it could look a lot better.

Given that I don't have 20/20 version and my TV is only 42 inchs 4k would be over kill for me.

Another issue many people may not have thought about is video rendering.

The reason 4k may look better compared to 1080p on a 4k screen is because the screen is not able render lower resolutions than 4k.

I was blown away at how good DVDs look on my new laptop.

Its like 70% to 80% the quality of blu ray because the laptop does a very good job at up upscaling DVDs to 1080p.

But on my old Sony laptop that had a 1080p screen DVDs looked so bad they were almost unwatchable.

This was one of the reasons I stopped buying DVDs completely in the 2010s.

Also I noticed in a shop awhile ago a standard HD sports broadcast been show on a 4k TV, the image looked terrible.

I never seen a HD broadcast that looked this bad.

To me the reason the image looked so bad was because the screen was not able to properly render video under 4k.

This may be deliberate on behalf of TV/Screen manufacturers so people will upgrade to 4k.

Its like on my old laptop the difference between blu ray and DVD was night and day.

But on my new laptop that does a much better job at upscaling DVDs can look as good as 80% of blu ray quality.

With good upscaling the difference between UHD blu rays and standard blu rays should be unnoticeable for most people with average size TVs.

On a 42" 1080p screen you won't notice any major upgrade with 4K but upscaling to a 65" 4K Oled you sure will, I will buy the 4K disc versions on the movies I love, but I do need to upgrade my AV amp to take full advantage of the Dolby Atmos DTS-X mixes, I buy a lot of movies on Apple TV as well as picture quality whilst not as good as the disc comes pretty close but the audio mix is never as good as the 4K Disc.
I just hope with the 4K drives in next gen consoles and a drive to purchase new 4K TVs we might see an uptick in purchase of physical media and a drop in price

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,346 ✭✭✭El Gato De Negocios

DVD was very expensive when it came out then with the advent of blu ray which were even more expensive the prices dropped significantly. Blu ray prices are now relatively cheap with the advent of 4k. 8k or some such will come along some time in the not too distant future and the prices of 4k will reduce significantly.

On topic, some nice 4k releases Ive picked up

    Casino from Everything Blu

    Goodfellas from Titans of Cult

American Werewolf in London from Turbine

Terminator 2 and Leon from Novamedia

    Midsommer from Amazon Japan

Possibly not. There's diminishing returns in terms of what the human eye can actually distinguish, and the market for optical media can't be in the rude health it was with the streaming services eating their dinner.

Yeah, there seems to be a train of thought that 4K will be the last major physical media in terms of film for the foreseeable future. Can certainly see the logic.
In terms of sales DVDs still dominates, with Blu Ray being a distant second.
UHD Discs are a niche market like laserdisc back in the day.

Well I just ordered Tenet from Amazon US
Comes in around €42, I'm a big Nolan fan and have purchased nearly all of his 4K releases. Gets a pretty good tech review from Sparechange (Good youtube channel for 4K Release reviews and only looks at picture quality and audio quality)

It's out here on 4K on Monday.

Yeah it's available from Golden discs or Tower records for about thirty quid. Preordered it for a Xmas prezzie for one of the family.

Yeah I know wanted the uncut version and also I wanted the digital code to load into MoviesAnywhere and iTunes

Fair enough, picked up Color out of Space on 4K earlier on in the year from the US. About the only thing that can be annoying is some of the included Blu Rays are region A locked.

Just curious where people are picking up 4k blu ray?

With brexit bringing extra charges when buying from Amzon UK, be better off buying local.
