What's involved in the next phase?

    Two stretches

Approx 3km between the eastern end of the recent works at Ballynasare and the 2022/23 scheme at Ballinclare, removing the remaining two hairpen bends and the twisty road in between

Approx 2km continuing the improvements west of Camp from the current end at Ballygarret to the townland of Doonore North.

Will there ever come a time that the T junction coming from Dingle/Camp towards Tralee where you have to stop for priority R560Castlegregory/Brandon traffic gets swapped around? It seems an anomaly that N86 traffic from Dingle have to stop just to continue on the same N86 road towards Tralee and instead the R560 traffic have the uninterrupted right of way. Logically, shouldn't it be the other way round if the junction was safely reconfigured?

It should be a part of the Camp to Camp Junction part of the scheme, which is unlikely to happen soon as it's slated to be one of the last two sections to be upgraded (with Lispole to Dingle). I believe it's to be replaced with a roundabout.

Thanks Marno. As a long time user of that stretch of road, I will be sad in a way to see the back of the hairpin bends. You knew that you were on the final stretch to Dingle when you came upon them.

I have struggled over the many years this scheme has been active to figure out exactly where locations are. Looking up town land names of Google maps or Openstreetmap is fruitless as it either shows the wrong location or doesn’t find them. Can we not just say something like “4.2 km from Dingle until 8.7 km from Dingle”?

If you use Google Street View, you can find the extents of the scheme based on:

The eastern end of the 2018 scheme at Ballynasare

The western end of the 2023 scheme at Ballinclare

The entire section between those points is the Ballynasare-Ballinclare scheme.

The eastern scheme is slightly more complicated. The eastern end is the end of the 2018 Camp-Ballygarret scheme, and the western end is approx 2.3km further west in the townland of Doonore North

Was back that way recently, new fencing done on section after Camp and also further west at those bad hairpin bends.

Will be a nice bit of work to do on those hairpin sections when you see the fencing in place.

So I would describe Ballinclare-Ballynasare as 12.4km from Dingle until 15.8 km from Dingle. (Of course the length will reduce when the scheme is built as it cuts the corner!)

Southern extant of the scheme is at 52.2101267,-9.9338868 , as per the fencing

I had a look today. The first one heading west will be quite the challenge. Significant earthworks for that one is putting it mildly.

It will be quite the transformation of the western section.

I also passed that way today - a good few barrow loads will be necessary to fill those valleys that the hairpins currently circumnavigate.

Tender out for the next phase: 3.8km between Ballynasare and Ballinclare and 2.25km between Ballygarret and Doonore North

    Estimated value €31m

For these bends, would bridging them be a better solution than filling in the valleys? I imagine the EIAR wouldn't be too favourable to filling them in?
