Only team to beat Donegal. Just saying

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,213 ✭✭✭Neddyusa

And a very good Donegal that day too, which makes the Ros win all the more notable!

Its funny though, people (mostly journalists) who weren't in the Hyde were certain the reason Donegal lost was because they weren't trying! A narrative McGuinness fueled with his post match comments.

As impressive as Donegal were in the Hyde, you could see they had another gear in them and they showed that gear in Croker on Sunday.

I reckon Mark Dowd saw that Donegal Final performance coming and that's why he wanted Ros nowhere near Jones Road last week.

They wouldn't have made the final even with a win in castlebar

Jesus, Dara Cregg red card is a disaster for the Mayo game.

Not sure what he did, I suspect he did something before the camera showed all the pusshing and pulling, but either way it's not good for Roscommon

Unreal performance yesterday, Mayo had no answers in the second half.

If they can get close to that level against Galway, they'll have a great chance of winning.

One thing that has been slowly building over the last year or two is a stronger panel, they have options off the bench they didn't always have, even with a number of players missing yesterday.

    Aaaaaahhhhhh, that was just wonderful.

Even the weather co-operated. What a beautiful day!!

I thought beforehand if Roscommon just played to their potential they would win. But that's a big 'IF' when it comes to Roscommon v Mayo. Even middlin Mayo teams have a long history of beating the crap out of decent Roscommon teams simply because Roscommon were afraid of them for some stupid reason. Well, thank f*ck those miserable days are gone!

Having said that, when O'Donoghue got their goal I was genuinely worried. Roscommon had given the ball away cheaply a number of times and Mayo seemed on a bit of a roll. But, the last 10 minutes or so of the first half, Roscommon finally started clicking and I thought with the slight wind advantage in the second half Roscommon could win, but boy I didn't expect what followed.

Watching the droves of long-faced Mayo fans leaving 10 minutes before the end was so satisfying and I really don't have to explain why.

While Diarmuid was fantastic, I actually thought Neary was the best player on the pitch. I've seen this kid since he was underage and he is a leader, with skill, speed and coolness. He has come back from two bad injuries and looks like he's going to fulfil his potential. I was surprised he wasn't moved onto Kobe much earlier, as he has the speed to match him and the tenacity to stifle. Speaking of which, I think Kobe is the real deal. From a Roscommon point of view I hope he goes to Australia, but from a purely sporting perspective what a loss to Gaelic football he would be if he goes.

Anyway, the fact that Roscommon haven't beaten Galway in the Hyde (championship) since 1990 needs to be sorted out. Galway are a top side, but are definitely beatable and again, if Roscommon play to their potential there's no reason they can't win. So go and win it!

Keith Doyle had an excellent game too.

I've often been critical of him amongst my peers when discussing football

(too ponderous in some games gone by)

but I was absolutely delighted to be proven wrong yesterday.

    Completely agree.

With his new haircut, I wasn't even sure it was him a few times, as he was moving so sprightly. He's a fine fielder and a very good kicker of the ball, but his mobility was always a question mark, but he certainly was moving yesterday. Delighted with his display.

    Super win for the U20s.

Tremendous game. Went to extra-time, but Roscommon just were not going to be denied.

Showed great heart, courage, will-to-win and that's what wins matches.

    Long may it continue.

Great bit of clever link play by Cathal McKeon to make the goal chance at the end too,

a real bit of calm clued in football when it'd be so easy to just lose the head under pressure and go hunting a ridiculous 2 pointer or something.

    A great week.

You're far from the only one who thinks that.

There's been a lot of talk about him for a few years now and only on Friday last I heard a very knowledgable football man describe him as 'the new Brian Stack'. That's high praise in my book.

He captained Roscommon CBS to All-Ireland 'B' glory last year. He was a key player in Athlone IT's first ever All-Ireland Fresher's title a few weeks ago and now has captained the U20s to Connacht. And to top it all off, he's a former All-Ireland handball champion too. He's a winner.

He leads teams from the front. Similar to Stack and IMO Neary too. The more leaders you get in a team the better.

Have been looking forward to his senior breakthrough for the last few years and I expect it will happen next year.

Congrats to all Rossies on here

For a county with limited resources there is so much to admire about how ye go about things.

The flashes of brilliance, the scenes at the final whistle , the superb speech by the captain after.

Looked like a superb day out and one of the great Connacht finals.

    Kudos.

That really was one of the GREAT days.

Great scores, great match, great crowd, great atmosphere and obviously great result.

I was quite nervous in the runup to it, as the feelgood factor after the Mayo match was beginning to turn into over-confidence and we all know how Roscommon don't cope very well with expectation. But this team seem to have discovered that great intangible - consistency. Under this management team they have produced very good performances repeatedly.

The most enjoyable thing for me though is the desire they are showing. The sheer will-to-win that carried them over the line yesterday when 6 points down and only 9 minutes left was wonderful to see. There seemed to be a collective 'we're not losing this game' and the coolness and correct decision-making in that timeframe was so impressive. If it was to be encapsulated in one move it was the point scored immediately after Diarmuid's two-pointer. Galway keeper kicked the ball over the sideline and rather than play really safe and hope to run down the 90 odd seconds left, they worked what looked to me a pre-prepared move and scored a superb point. Ruthlessness at its best, meaning Galway had to score at least a 2 pointer to save the match.

The excitement and noise in the crowd was as good as anything I have ever experienced and the pitch-invasion was a sight to behold. There were thousands of people out there loving every second of the experience.

    What a great day.

Congrats to Roscommon from a Galway supporter, it was a brilliant match but also a day I'll always remember. It was the best Connacht final I've ever been at. The match had everything, loads of scores and plenty of them were outstanding points or goals, lead changing hands, as clean as you could reasonably hope for, superb atmosphere, tense finish. It was great stuff. Ye can really aim for matches in July this year.

U20s showing great heart here, after a poor first half.

Really came into it in the second, but unfortunately the forwards (besides John McGuinness) keep losing the ball cheaply and don't look like scoring unless it's point blank.

Gone to extra time. Fingers crossed.

    Well, Kerry deserved it.

I wasn't overly impressed with them, but Roscommon made far too many fundamental errors to win.

In fairness to them, they kept on trying right to the end and showed a lot of heart throughout and the scoreline certainly doesn't do them any justice, but that's the way it goes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,922 ✭✭✭orangerhyme

From a Kerry man in peace.

Hard luck to Roscommon. Showed great skill and heart to level the game and go to ET.

Shows ye have talent coming through to supplement your current seniors.

This is considered a very talented group in Kerry and ye went toe to toe with them for 60 minutes.

Scoreline wasn't a fair reflection of the game.

Lots of mistakes today, beat themselves.

Silver lining, they are better than they were today. Hopefully the draw will be kind

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 649 ✭✭✭White lighting

Yeah we didnt really perform apart from one or two.

    Lambe was excellent.

Think we can only afford to play one of Doyle or Ryan midfield going forward, Both very good in the air but limited apart from that and two similar.

Not sure what Rob Heneghan brings to the team either and a switch there would do us no harm.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,284 ✭✭✭selectamatic

Personally I thought Rob Heneghan made some excellent runs last week and was simply not given the ball at the right moment.

I think I counted 3 guilt edged occasions where this happened. Which would have put him on for a potential 1-2

Instead we left with nothing from all 3 attacks iirc.

Fair enough other things probably didn't go his way but if he's played through for that goal chance and scores in the first half he might well have had a totally different game.

The frustrating thing was there were a number of other occasions where goal chances were forced in the first half when a point was definitely the better option.

Just a stereotypical case of beating ourselves that last day unfortunately imo.

I missed almost all the first half the last day, so cannot give an informed opinion on the match as a whole, but your viewpoint tallies with what I was told about the first 35 minutes. Trying to force goal chances when handy points were on, seems to be the most repeated complaint.

I strongly believe in Rob Heneghan. I've seen him enough at underage and now at adult, to believe that he's very close to becoming a top-class player. Call me over-optimistic, but I believe it's just a matter of time with him. And don't forget he's still very young. He has massive potential.
